Origins of Santas Little Helper
rigovega13 November 2020
I cant believe they actually did an episode that almost felt like the earlier episodes. It is certainly nostalgic for us that have been fans of the show for a long time. This episode is defnitely one one the best I have seen in a while. I highly recommmend this one even if you typically avoid the newer SImpsons stuff.

A Sweet Episode About Santa's Little Helper
e_daneva24 December 2023
The Way of the Dog was an amazing episode. I guess this episode counts as a Christmas episode. Well then, I have watched 18 other Christmas Episodes, and there was 3 bad, 3 okay, 3 good, and 10 really good. This episode falls in the really good category. This episode isn't full of humor, but it has enough humor to entertain. One thing that this episode amazingly succeeds at is heart. This episode has lots and lots of heart, and that is why I love it. The episode also references back to Simpsons Roasting On An Open Fire. Santa's Little Helper episodes are always really good ( expect for Old Yeller Belly ). This is such a great episode. I would say it's as good as the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie. In all, I give this a 8.2 out of 10.

A great circle back to where it all began 31 years earlier.

Warning: Spoilers
Santa's Little Helper is feeling scared at Christmas when he sees Bart's Santa hat. We finally learn his backstory; he was stolen by a dog thief who takes the fastest dogs to a track after being Santa run fast, and Santa didn't like being separated from his mother all these years. Elaine Wolff and all of the Simpsons slap the dog abuser's face, and Santa bites his hand. Santa finally gets to see his mom again, and they get their happy ending. I also really liked the jokes about "everyone" being in The Simpsons' Christmas card, the way Homer plays Candy Crush In Real Life and when Bart went out of his way to pay Mr. Burns to tell Homer that Bart should sleep outside with the dog. Those jokes really took me by surprise and I laughed out loud because they did. And while I do not like the joke of Homer being a mysoginist when Lisa wrote something for Bart to say to Homer (it feels wrong that Carolyn Omine, a female writer of The Simpsons, would exaggerate Homer's difficulty to listen to a female voice this badly when the problem should have been him not taking what his kids say seriously regardless of their gender), I still felt a bit better when Homer gave Lisa credit for writing it.

A great throwback episode
This episode had a nice balance of mostly just the Simpsons family and Santa's Little Helper. It was touching and still maintained its humor in the process. Had they decided to make this the series finale, it would have been acceptable since it kind of ended where it started (SLH episode). I strongly suggest watching this, especially if you have given up on the show.

First good Simpsons episode in over 20 years!
koohii17 October 2020
Usually there's one, may be two, and rarely three good jokes in any Simpson's episode. Season17 didn't have a single good joke. This is the first time in over 20 years that I've watched an episode of The Simpsons and thought "Wow, that was a good story." The jokes are meh, but the Story is great. Mainly because for once everyone isn't being a completely self-serving rump, and show some actual care for someone's suffering instead of just making crass and vulgar fun at that character's expense. Ultimately, this is the perfect note to stop watching The Simpsons with. I doubt they'll ever top it, and frankly, the show has way outlived its ability to be truly entertaining above the level of, say, Three Stooges humor.

It's not the same show you remember; now it's a Disney soap opera.
santifersan18 March 2022
The only interesting thing about this episode is that it recalls the first episode of the show. At the beginning it only has two good jokes, but from then on it's not funny anymore. It make references, which I personally hate, to cultural knowledge in the Information Age.

It's evident that Disney is tailoring the series for the "snowflake" generation. There's no more clever and biting humor; it's now sanitized to avoid upsetting the extreme left of our time. It's not the same show you remember; it's become something crafted for the new generations. Ironically, what's amusing is that even the new generations don't really like it either. In fact, feel old, because today's teenagers and twenty-somethings have no idea about the episodes you recall.

It's not the raucous show you remember; it's become very Disney-esque nowadays. Take a look and you'll understand.

An example, just to highlight one of the many flaws of the show's decline. Bart was initially a character who didn't know much, got into trouble, and played pranks, but deep down, he was an innocent kid unaware of the complexities of adults, consequences, and life in general. However, nowadays, he behaves like a know-it-all, just being the way he is by choice, displaying an arrogant attitude and lacking any lessons left to learn. Homer was a foolish and mischievous character; now, in these new seasons, he's portrayed as someone who's just there, as-is. And in this episode, brace yourself: Can you believe that none of the family members are the protagonists? No, guess who is? A dog psychologist who despises people and is entirely new to the series, plus there's an undeveloped, irrelevant subplot about her waiting for her lover to leave his wife and propose to her. And that's what the series has become today. Can you believe it? What am I watching - The Simpsons or a soap opera?

It was not a bad finale it was kind of heart warming. A good Santa's little helper episode and a good modern Simpsons episode in general. B-

Endearing a Beloved Treasure!
joshg-9793428 July 2023
I've been a long time fan of The Simpsons ever since it became available on Disney Plus back in 2019 (and even further before that), and I have seen basically every episode at least twice or more, excluding anything past season 31 so far. I do find that the newer seasons have had a slowdown in quality or imagination. However, this episode was an exception. It was thoughtful and endearing in every way. And really, to be honest, I am not easily a victim of being tearful in the things I watch, but this had me teared up a bit, feeling so great after watching this episode. This was a very emotional and beautiful moment in the series.
