Mira Sorvino confirms that she and Lisa Kudrow are finalising contracts for Romy And Michele’s High School Reunion 2. More here.
It was all the way back in 1997 that out of the blue, Hollywood gave us a pair of impressive high school reunion movies. First up, in the UK at least, was Grosse Pointe Blank, starring John Cusack. That had the better reviews and initial response at the time. Yet since then, it’s Romy And Michele’s High School Reunion that’s come far more to the fore.
Starring Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow, and directed by David Mirkin, the original film – as discussed in an old Film Stories podcast episode here – was penned by Robin Schiff. She based it on a 1988 stage production called Ladies Room, and it was revealed a little while back that she was cooking up a Romy And Michele’s High School Reunion 2.

So looking at this movie, if you’ve ever seen it, you would think brain-dead blondes go to high school reunion in hopes of being thought of as anything but brain-dead blondes. That kind of sums up the plot really, but once you dig a little deeper you find that the movie had some meaning to it that a lot of people can identify with and at least understand. Yes, the lead characters play two women that are a bit dippy and don’t have a clue between them but somehow they manage to exist and coexist in a manner that is

Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind tha

Who got fat who got old and who got pregnant? Those are three of the standard questions you might hear at any class reunion and they tend to be asked during the first initial meeting more often than not. Unless you happen to be the type to keep tabs on your old high school buddies on a regular basis you might actually be surprised at what ten to twenty years can do. This is the time when you get to reconnect, catch up, and figure out just what kind of things you’ve done since high school and whether or not

With his devilish smirk and playful demeanor, Alan Cumming has always been a charmer. Exuding an uncommon blend of boyishness and gravitas in high-profile roles like “Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion” and “The Good Wife,” to his tour-de-force one-man “Macbeth” on Broadway, Cumming has built a reputation as one of the most versatile, provocative, and charismatic actors working today. Which is why it’s unsettling to see him play a character who is, as he put it, “kind of not very nice.”
The film is “After Louie,” and the role is Sam Cooper, a prickly visual artist who spends his days paying for sex with younger men and sifting through archival footage of a friend who died of AIDS. Based on the experiences of writer/director Vincent Gagliostro, Sam is one of the lucky few survivors who lived through the AIDS epidemic and came out the other side.

If you’re hoping for a “Step Brothers” sequel, don’t give up hope just yet. Will Ferrell appeared on “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen” a few nights ago, and as part of the After Show he fielded questions about follow-ups. It took him a while to get serious, of course: “I’ve got great news for you: no,” Ferrell responded after being asked about future installments of “Elf” and/or “Night at the Roxbury.”
After the actor also replied in the negative to “Old School,” Cohen asked whether there’s any movie Ferrell would like to see get a follow-up. He rubbed his chin for a bit before finally responding, “I’d love to see a sequel of ‘Kramer vs. Kramer.'”

The eternal battle of who’s the Mary and who’s the Rhoda enters a new round, as Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion — the cult hit starring Mira Sorvino, Lisa Kudrow, Janeane Garofalo and Alan Cumming — becomes the latest movie to get stage-musical treatment.
Directed by Kristin Hanggi (Tony-nominated for Rock of Ages), the show stars Cortney Wolfson and Stephanie Renee Wall as the titular twentysomethings who lie about their careers to impress their former classmates. Its world-premiere run officially opens June 15 and plays through July 2 at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre.

No, really. The title for this article is true. There might actually be a Romy and Michele’s High School reunion sequel. That means there’s potentially a studio executive out there who might sign off on this project. To say I’m surprised would be the understatement of the year. If anyone asks me “what’s hands down the worst movie you’ve ever seen?” 10 times out of 10 I answer with Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion. But here we are “celebrating” the movie’s 20th anniversary and there’s even a musical out that’s based on the movie. So what about a sequel?

Twenty years ago today, a little movie called Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion premiered to mixed reviews. Many compartmentalized it as a silly comedy starring “that chick from Friends as Michelle” and “the other one who went on to star in American Pie, oh wait, that’s Mena Suvari.”
But any from-the-start Romy and Michele fan knows three things: 1. Mira Sorvino is a comedic legend in large part due to this movie, 2. “Michele” is spelled with one L and 3. Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion was a trail-blazing film that, while a comedy on its surface, embodied...

It’s been 20 years since Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino strapped on their blood-filled shoes and headed back to Tuscon for Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, but fans of the 1997 comedy haven’t forgotten the cult classic (or the all-important formula for glue).
So, when Et’s Carly Steel spoke with Kudrow at the Boss Baby junket last month, we couldn’t help but ask where she thought the indomitable best friends would be, 20 years after proving that all you need to wow your old classmates is confidence, a loyal best friend and a perfectly choreographed dance number.
“Hopefully she would still be married to Sandy,” Kudrow said of her character, who found love at the film’s end with her class’s resident geek-turned-billionaire, Sandy Frink (Alan Cumming). “And I think, you know, maybe she and Romy still have their store and probably a reality show.”

If you are currently in the middle of your businesswoman lunch special, you might have come across the news that Romy And Michele’s High School Reunion is celebrating its 20th anniversary this week. The cult classic starred Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino as two ditzy yet well meaning friends who embark on a quest to redeem themselves in the eyes of their high school peers. (It probably doesn’t hurt that Janeane Garofalo, Justin Theroux, Alan Cumming, and Camryn Manheim were also in the cast). Though they procure the right accessories to appear to be successful businesswomen, Romy and Michele draw a blank when it comes picking an industry to be so super successful in, and end up blurting out that they came up with Post-It notes.

The Oscar-winning actress, who played slacker Romy in the cult-favorite 1997 film opposite Lisa Kudrow as Michele, was joined at Cinespia‘s screening at the Palace Theatre by the film’s screenwriter, Robin Schiff.

Last Week’S Review: ‘Mr. Robot’ Gives Us A Literal Garbage Fire
In Elliot’s Head, Two’s A Crowd
Having revealed that Elliot has been in prison, with his release imminent, you might think that this week’s installment would drop him back into the world and start moving all of the various storylines towards a convergence, or at least the start of a new phase. But Elliot and Mr. Robot are nowhere to be seen, nor are Tyrell or Joanna Wellick; instead we get an fsociety-centric episode.
Some Kind Of A Revolutionary
With the stars of the show taking a break, we get more time with Mobley (Azhar Khan) and Trenton (Sunita Mani). In a flashback to the beginning of the series we see their hacker version of a meet-cute, which involves her pwning him while waiting to meet Elliot. Instead, it’s Darlene who arrives, and reads...

This summer’s latest action comedy, Warner Bros’ “Central Intelligence,” pairs Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart as former high school classmates who reunite for a top-secret CIA mission. While some critics acknowledge the fun, buddy-comedy aspect of the film, most agreed that the chemistry between the two leads couldn’t make up for lackluster writing and plot.

Moira Macdonald of The Seattle Times was not impressed with the movie’s execution, and writes, “Sometimes, matches seemingly made in heaven end up somewhere closer to hell. Whoever thought up the idea of pairing Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart for a crime/caper/comedy was right on the money: The blend of Johnson’s laid-back hero-dudeness and Hart’s whippet-fast comic timing should have been good fun. But somebody, alas, had an idea, though not a good one: Make Johnson the comedian and Hart the straight man. The result is kind of like having ice cream for dinner and steak for dessert — it seems like it might work, but it doesn’t.”
IndieWire’s David Ehrlich was equally unimpressed: “With a tepid studio offering like this, in which themes include such bold ideas as “bullies are bad,” “guns are fun,” and “all those haters from high school would worship you if you weren’t so fat,” there’s no hope that Johnson might dive off the deep end and create something special.”

Jon Frosch of The Hollywood Reporter was a bit more optimistic, writing, “It capitalizes on the chemistry between Hart and Johnson, who convey what seems like genuine delight in each other’s company – something that gives this bromantic diversion a giddy kick.” He adds, however, that “The bar for studio comedies has sunk so low that when one comes along and doesn’t bludgeon you with its ineptness, there’s a temptation to lavish praise on it.”
Variety’s Owen Gleiberman agrees: “It delivers – on some basic, giddy, turn-off-your-frontal-lobes level. It’s an action-comedy utensil, like ‘Rush Hour’ crossed with an old Arnold Schwarzenegger shoot-’em-up, with a few goofy added sprinkles of ‘Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.'”

While many reviews praised the leads while critiquing the film as a whole, Neil Pond of Parade Magazine loved it all. He argues that “If comedy is art, ‘Central Intelligence’ wants to make sure the canvas is well covered—it’s got a big, tall brush, a short, little brush and some very funny painters.”
“Central Intelligence” hits theaters June 17.
