George Miller's Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is now in theaters, and we're breaking down the biggest moments from the epic revenge odyssey to reveal if and how the movie ultimately connects to Mad Max: Fury Road.
If you haven't been to see Furiosa yet, beware of major spoilers from this point on.
Playing out over a 15-year span, Furiosa follows the title character as she is taken from her home in the Green Place of Many Mothers and brought to Dementus' camp. Determined to discover the whereabouts of Furiosa's "place of abundance," the ruthless warlord tortures and kills her mother, setting the youngster on a path of inescapable vengeance.
Dementus keeps Furiosa captive, raising her as his protégé of sorts and renaming her "Little D." However, after striking a deal with rival warlord Immortan Joe to take over the running of Gas Town, Dementus agrees to leave Furiosa...

This article has some pretty big Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga spoilers.
For 18 years and 148 minutes of runtime, Furiosa simply wants to go home. This primal, human need is a universal motivation, and it takes on mythic proportions in a movie where audiences know that quest is doomed. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is of course being marketed as an “odyssey;” an epic about the formative years of the most badass character to ever cross the Wasteland. Yet because you should remember that the Green Place is long destroyed by the time Mad Max: Fury Road rolls along, this film and Anya Taylor-Joy’s characterization of this woman at its heart is haunted by an air of futility.
… Which makes the unexpectedly hopeful ending all the more beautiful as we discover what exactly Furiosa does beneath a tree with the man who took everything from her.

Plot: Stolen from her people as a child and forced to witness her mother’s execution, young Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) sets out on an epic quest for vengeance against the warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth).
Review: George Miller’s Mad Max series contains not one but two of the most incredible action movies ever made. Sure, there’s Fury Road, but there’s also The Road Warrior. Both are masterpieces of their genre, so the bar has been set pretty high for Miller’s return to the Wasteland. The early reviews seem overly concerned that Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga isn’t a replay of Mad Mad: Fury Road, with it telling an epic, fifteen-year tale, the likes of which has never been attempted in the series before. From the 1979 original onward, all the movies told relatively compact stories, so Miller and co-writer Nico Lathouris deserve praise for doing something different.

When the follow-up to a commercially and financially successful film is announced – whether a sequel, prequel, or spin-off – the usual question arises: why? Why not let the originally planned movie stand alone in peace? Is there a need or even enough story to create another film in the same fictional world? What will this new installment have to offer? The questions are numerous, but in the end, they will disappear if Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga meets the tremendous anticipation of the general public and critics worldwide.
George Miller created the Mad Max franchise in the ’80s, but despite its tremendous success at the time, it was only with Fury Road – with the help of his co-writer, Nico Lathouris – that the saga reached a whole other level of appreciation. Considered by the vast majority of viewers as a true masterpiece of the action genre, the character brilliantly portrayed by Charlize Theron...

This weekend brings the action-packed odyssey of "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" to theaters for all to witness and enjoy. While the movie acts as a prequel to incredible "Mad Max: Fury Road," it does differ from George Miller's fast-paced franchise revival from 2015 by spanning years, even decades, as we learn the origins of Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) and see how her quest for vengeance against the maniacal Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) becomes tied up in the legacy of Mad Max and the Wasteland's wars.
But where "Furiosa" matches "Fury Road" is in the unbelievable, adrenaline-fueled vehicular mayhem and brutal combat between both humans and customized cars, trucks, and pretty anything with wheels. However, the prequel does enhance one particular element of the "Mad Max" franchise, and it's a detail that almost made it into "Fury Road."

Even though there are currently only five films within the "Mad Max" saga, the movies span an impressive number of decades, from the late 1970s to 2024. Naturally, there has been quite an evolution within cinema during that time, both for the medium itself as well as for the saga's director, George Miller. At age 79, Miller shows no interest in settling into any rigid stylistic groove.
As times have changed, so has the look and feel of the "Mad Max" films, and one could make the case that each successive installment of the series has expanded in ambition and scope concurrent with most long-running film franchises. With the second film, "Mad Max 2," and the fourth, "Fury Road," being (as of now) the most popular and influential installments of the saga, there's never been any real call to do what so many less successful franchises tend to do,...

As a classic grounded dystopian narrative, the existing storyline of Mad Max has delineated the man-made catastrophe leading to the downfall of contemporary civilization, and in that context, Green Place is an important signifier in a new world order regarding the established binary between masculine and feminine roles in the series. In the latest venture of the franchise, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and also in the previous entry, Fury Road, the Green Place served a role that went beyond being just a setting and incorporated symbolic elements that conveyed strong ecofeminist connotations. Additionally, narrative-wise, Furiosa herself is intricately connected with the place as well. With the fictional location being important enough to act as the primary background in the upcoming Mad Max installment, it is necessary to discuss its connection with Furiosa, her past, and everything in between.

Lady and gentlemens, the great George Miller has returned with another Wasteland tale! Listen to his words carefully! The prequel to the Aussie post-apocalyptic action spectacle Mad Max: Fury Road has pulled up into theaters. While Fury Road gave enough of a background on Charlize Theron’s character to get us behind her as a protagonist, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is Miller’s attempt to expand on it even further with a larger scope than the series has seen before.
Reviews for Furiosa have been positive, with a certified fresh critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes with an 89% and an audience score of 93%. Our own Chris Bumbray raved in his review, “Miller’s made this a tactile, visceral experience that drives home the point that at seventy-nine, he’s still a master of his craft and making movies directors forty years his junior wouldn’t have the energy or skill to tackle.

The Garfield Movie has arrived in theaters ahead of Memorial Day to kick off the summer fun alongside Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The animated feature film stars the titular orange tabby cat in a coming-of-age story based on Jim Davis’ iconic cartoon strips and an adapted script from David Reunolds (Finding Nemo) based on an earlier draft from Paul Kaplan & Mark Torgove. Mark Dindal (Chicken Little) directs the creature feature.
With Chris Pratt bringing Garfield to life and Samuel L. Jackson voicing his streetwise and long-list father Vic, the film boasts quite an ensemble of voice actors that further contribute to Garfield’s adventure. Ted Lasso alumni Brett Goldstein and Hannah Waddingham lend their familiar vocals to the movie as do Saturday Night Live alumni Bowen Yang and Cecily Strong.

Anya Taylor-Joy’s Furiosa has stormed onto the scene with a solid 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. This also interestingly cements it as the first-ever film in the Mad Max saga to reach such a remarkable milestone upon release. Once again, the action poet George Miller has defied expectations, proving his mastery of the genre yet again.

By creating the Mad Max universe, director George Miller allowed himself a never-ending stream of projects for as long as he wishes. But admittedly, Miller isn’t looking forward to turning Mad Max into an overblown franchise with countless spin-offs no one asked for. What he wants is one more prequel following the recently released Furiosa, and his idea for it will get you more excited than you’d think.
Miller Has More Untold Mad Max Stories
While working on Fury Road, George Miller had to deeply understand the movie’s characters to make sure their mannerisms, lines, and even vehicles reflect their lives. Thanks to that process, the director now has backstories of several important characters that he couldn’t touch upon in Fury Road himself due to how condensed and action-packed Tom Hardy’s iconic movie was.

“Screen Talk: went live at the American Pavilion in Cannes this year and drew a lively crowd. Anne Thompson raved about one of the big-epic Hollywood titles playing out of competition, George Miller’s prequel “Furiosa” (Warner Bros.), starring Anya Taylor-Joy in the title role, which opens May 14, while both Thompson and cohost Ryan Lattanzio panned Kevin Costner’s old-fashioned three-hour Western “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter One” (Warner Bros.).
They both agree that this vanity project makes mad genius Francis Coppola’s self-funded $120 million “Megalopolis” look brilliant by comparison. Even if the Competition title is “unhinged,” at least he’s treading new ground, unlike Costner, who has spent some $100 million so far for the first two chapters of a planned four (the second part releases August 16). Coppola still awaits a North American buyer.

The prequel to Max Max: Fury Road hops to win Memorial Day weekend with $40 million-$45 million for for the four days, but will have to battle a subdued moviegoing marketplace. So far, Furiosa is doing comparable business to Fury Road, which earned $3.l7 million preview on its way to a three-day gross of $45.4 million.
The new film sees Anya Taylor Joy play-imperator Furiosa, a character made famous by Charlize Theron in Fury Road. Chris Hemsworth also stars.
The other big Memorial Day opener is Sony’s The Garfield Movie, which took in a solid $1.9 million, a solid start for a family film.
Garfield is tracking to open in the $30 million to $35 million range thanks to the demand for movies playing to younger kids.

Ready, steady, go! The Memorial Day Weekend box office is off to the races as George Miller’s highly-anticipated Mad Max prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, barrels into cinemas. The visually splendiferous, high-octane action showcase hit the post-apocalyptic road with $3.5M in Thursday previews, adding a shot of nitrous to what is sure to be an exciting weekend at the movies.
The other big release of the holiday weekend, The Garfield Movie, gobbled up $1.9M in previews, coming in slightly higher than the Ryan Reynolds-led live-action comedy If ($1.7M). While Reynolds is typically a more attractive draw than the sardonic orange tabby Persian cat, the fully-animated presentation of The Garfield Movie could be more appealing to families looking to stay cool during the steamy afternoon hours.
For comparison’s sake, 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road hit the wasteland with $3.7M in May 2015, opening in second place with a $45.4M debut.

Are you ready to head back to the Wasteland? In 2015, George Miller brought Mad Max back to rev up his engines in a massive way. Mad Max: Fury Road thrilled audiences and critics alike. The new chapter did something unexpected for a colossal summer action flick; it earned six Academy Awards and nominations for Best Picture and Best Director. That’s pretty great for what started as an Ozploitation flick in 1979.
What’s truly special about this franchise is that it’s all from Miller, aside from Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, co-directed by him and George Ogilvie. Even still, every film in the franchise has delivered. The Road Warrior and Fury Road are top picks for this viewer. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Box Office (North America): Projections Are Aiming At $45 Million+ Collection In Its Debut Weekend(Photo Credit –IMDb)
George Miller is back with yet another post-apocalyptic dystopian action movie, this one starring Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor Joy. However, it is a spin-off and a prequel to the 2015 magnum opus Mad Max: Fury Road. The film was released in the United States on Friday, and here’s how much it is expected to earn on its debut weekend.
It is the fifth film in the franchise. The first movie came out in 1979, starring Mel Gibson as Mad Max Rockatansky. He is a police officer turned vigilante in a dystopian near-future Australia in the middle of a societal collapse. It was followed by Mad Max 2 in 1981, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome in 1985, and Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015. According to reports, besides the 2024 spin-off, another...

Despite more movies in the marketplace, we’re still feeling the aftermath of the strikes. How is that? Many aren’t in the habit of moviegoing yet, and while content is king, neither of this weekend’s releases are expected to create a stampede: one is a prequel/spinoff with a new actress to a beloved Oscar winning cult movie, and the other is a family movie of an age-old comic-strip cat who eats lasagna. Don’t expect a $200M+ four-day weekend like the last two Memorial Day holiday frames have delivered.

Director George Miller’s R-rated prequel to “Mad Max: Fury Road” has made $3.5 million in previews so far. The Warner Bros. action film is expected to bring in $40 million to $45 million over the four-day Memorial Day weekend, roughly the same as what “Fury Road” made across three days in 2015.
“Fury Road,” which starred Tom Hardy as wasteland warrior Max Rockatansky and introduced Charlize Theron as the badass driver Imperator Furiosa, opened with $45.4 million after $3.7 million in Thursday previews.
“Furiosa” winds back the clock and stars Anya Taylor-Joy as a younger version of Theron’s character. It shows how she became a fearless sharpshooter working for the evil Immortan Joe and his War Boys, later seen in “Fury Road.” Chris Hemsworth also stars as Dementus, the leader of a pack of biker warriors.

In the medium of cinema, sequels still feel like a relatively recent phenomenon, especially as studios continue to seek to exploit intellectual property and squeeze as much blood (re: money) out of the same stone as possible. Yet despite the obvious capitalistic aims of film franchises, cinematic universes, and what have you, the tradition of continuing a story and/or telling new tales featuring evergreen characters is very ancient.
The "Mad Max" films, as conceived by the series' mastermind, George Miller, deliberately seek to continue those ancient, mythical traditions of storytelling rather than service more modern concepts of how to present a serialized narrative. Of course, this may not have always been the case, given that the original "Mad Max" from 1979 was made partially to exploit then-popular trends like the criminal biker film, the vigilante action movie, and so on. Certainly, beginning with 1981's...

Anya Taylor-Joy is one of the few, but increasing number of bonafide female superstars in Hollywood. Once upon a time, the industry was regularly criticized for a perceived poor representation of women in its arcs. Often used to inculcate glamor than a genuine vehicle for storytelling, times have indeed been changing, with a number of women-centric roles and projects giving them the kind of representation they have always deserved.

The Mad Max series has consistently pushed the boundaries of what action cinema can achieve, and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is no exception. As the summer of 2024 anticipates a bleak landscape for blockbuster films, George Miller returns with another explosive addition to his post-apocalyptic universe. The prequel stars the magnetic Anya Taylor-Joy in the titular role, taking over from Charlize Theron. This time, audiences are taken on a journey through Furiosa’s origin story, set against the desolate and dangerous wasteland fans love. There's a delicate dance to pulling off a great cameo. If a random appearance overstays its welcome, it can feel — to borrow a wrestling term — like a cheap pop. But if executed correctly, a cameo can elevate a scene into the stratosphere. David Bowie serving as the judge of the walk-off in "Zoolander" is perfection, Matt Damon singing "Scotty Doesn't Know" in "Eurotrip" gave us an all-time great "Is that who I think it is?!" moment, and Charlton Heston delivering a gripping, out-of-place monologue in the middle of "Wayne's World 2" is nothing short of genius. At this point in his 40+ year career, it can be said that filmmaker George Miller is a mythmaker. Despite his cinematic range, which spans brutal, violent live-action movies to family-friendly animated fare, all of his works have a spark of myth about them, whether he's dealing with women experimenting with the occult (as in "The Witches of Eastwick") or anthropomorphized animals venturing beyond their comfort zones (as in "Babe" and "Happy Feet").
Of course, Miller's magnum opus is what has now been officially dubbed the "Mad Max" saga, a series of films that has spanned the entire breadth of Miller's career to date. The fifth in the saga, "Furiosa," is in theaters now, and it's a picture that should silence anyone who still refers to these films as merely action movies. Unlike the previous "Mad Max" film, 2015's "Fury Road" (which "Furiosa" is a prequel to), this movie is a...

In 1979, George Miller made his feature debut with Mad Max, a modest, near-future indie about a cop taking on a biker gang. More than four decades later, amazingly, he’s still playing in that insane sandpit. Furiosa represents a lot of things: an epic slice of myth-making, a Homeric odyssey that broadens the ever-expanding dystopian world in which it is set; a prequel to 2015’s Fury Road, a historically exceptional action movie which may never be bettered; and perhaps the most ambitious film Miller has ever made.
It is a lot. Where Fury Road was set over a mere 36 hours, this story spans 15 years. Where Fury Road was singular, unstoppable action ecstasy, this is more episodic tension, divided into five chapters, each with cryptic titles like ‘The Pole Of Inaccessibility’. It is markedly different from that last film in so many ways, and yet inextricably tied to it, deepening our...

Let's get one thing out of the way before we head into a ranking that I'm sure people will be Very Normal About: George Miller's "Mad Max" saga is one of the most consistently great franchises in cinema history, and when it comes to the top three especially, all of these titles can easily swap placement depending on the day or a person's taste. In fact, we at /Film ranked the "Mad Max" films in 2022, but the ranking on the list you're reading today has shifted quite a bit. For one thing, Miller has unleashed "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" onto the world in the time since, and the original trilogy of films is no longer being swallowed whole by the frenzied hype of "Fury Road."
Miller made his feature directorial debut with the first "Mad Max" film in 1979, and the continued installments have only gotten bigger, bolder, and (usually) better.

As far as iconic franchises go, George Miller’s Mad Max films are right up there among Hollywood’s favorite film series. Similar to his namesake George Lucas and his brainchild Star Wars, Miller created the dystopian action series back in 1979 with Mel Gibson, which was followed by two successful sequels in the 80s.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is currently making roars, and it also features a blink-and-miss cameo of the original series’ protagonist. The franchise’s success is no stranger to entertainment enthusiasts, but Avalanche’s 2015 video game didn’t get as much love as the movies. The sales were a topic of debate as it was beaten by Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
Avalanche Studios co-founder Christofer Sundberg still hasn’t gone over it yet, as he revealed people blamed them for bad sales. It was the United Kingdom’s second bestseller following the first week of its release and was the eighth-bestselling game in the United States in the first month.

Chicago – It’s no “Fury Road,” but “Furiosa” is a suitably high octane summer blockbuster that delivers the eye popping action that Mad Max fans come for. The film is a prequel to that Oscar winning film, with Anya Taylor-Joy taking over for Charlize Theron as the one armed, shaved headed all around world-class bad ass.

The film starts with a pint-sized Furiosa picking a piece of fruit in a lush landscape known as The Green Place. She’s abducted by a biker gang and taken back to Dementus’ fiefdom. Gun blazing, blood spilling, and gas-guzzling motorcades of doom have returned to bring about another heatwave of death in the wasteland as the fifth movie in the Mad Max franchise, Furiosa hits the screens today in theaters worldwide. For the first time, a prequel spin-off installment has found its place in George Miller’s epic dystopian franchise, thanks to the positive reception of Imperator Furiosa, the hard-boiled, no-nonsense, battle-hardened warrior played by Charlize Theron, who had outshined everyone else in her first appearance in Mad Max: Fury Road.
In a time when a lack of good female-led action movies is evident, the solo venture of Furiosa could have been a major game changer like its predecessor. Especially with the scope of her intriguing past being explored, the roadmap was already charted, and fans expected a hard-hitting origin story for the character. Never knowingly upstaged, George Miller’s latest Mad Max film features the franchise’s biggest stunt yet. Here’s how the Furiosa team pulled off the War Rig chase.
“If we were gonna make an action film”, production designer Colin Gibson said of Fury Road, “This was gonna be the last great action film”.
Six Oscars, $400m and almost a decade later, Gibson found himself and the Mad Max team back in the desert. Their mission? Make the last great action film. Again.
True to the series’ unsubtle ideology, almost everything about Furiosa is bigger. It’s 28 minutes longer, for a start, more a decade-spanning odyssey than Fury Road’s comparatively low-key 3-day car chase.
Its biggest stunt sequence, too, dwarfs anything in the last film. Shot over roughly 78 days (accounts vary on the exact number) with 200 stunt performers trying very hard not to get run-over or blown up, Furiosa...

Anya Taylor-Joy in “Furiosa” would give Ryan Gosling’s “The Fall Guy” a run for his money.
“Furiosa” writer/director George Miller admitted to GQ UK that while filming the sprawling “Mad Max” prequel, he sometimes got confused between Taylor-Joy and her stunt double. Turns out, Taylor-Joy did more of her own stunts than even her director realized.
It took one scene where Furiosa (Taylor-Joy) had to climb into the front seat of a war rig through its smashed windscreen for Miller to realize just how down and dirty Taylor-Joy was going.

This article contains massive spoilers for "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga."
With the release of "Furiosa," the fifth film in the "Mad Max" saga, it is abundantly clear that these movies never intended to be a single, serialized narrative. Instead, each film is a piece of mercurial mythology — stories that aren't concerned with strict continuity. They're legends, in the way that stories about Moses or King Arthur are legends; they aren't chronicles of what exactly did happen, but what may have happened.
This approach to the "Mad Max" films began with the 1979 original (which opens with the vague "A Few Years From Now..." title card) and continued in earnest with 1981's "Mad Max 2," which is narrated by an older version of one of the principal characters (whom we only hear and never see). Only 2015's "Fury Road" is narrated by Max himself, and even then, he's not of sound mind.

“What is Chris Hemsworth?” Downey asked. “Renner says, ‘Absurdly, annoyingly amazing.’ Ruffalo came in strong with ‘friend from work.’ Scarlett got to the heart of it with ‘sensitive leading lady.’ Captain America calls him the ‘second best Chris.’ And I’ll bring it to the here and now: There is no one who deserves it more. He is ‘Hollywood star recipient.'”
On a more serious note, Downey lauded Hemsworth for being one of the most remarkable people he knows. Hemsworth received his star the day before the opening of his latest movie,...

The year was predicted to look pretty bleak with a number of major tentpoles being delayed due to the dual union strikes from the Writers’ Guild and the Actors’ Guild from late last year. However, that isn’t to say that there aren’t still some big releases, as some films were still ready to go for the summer. The past few weeks have seen a steamy character drama with Challengers, an action comedy with two stars from last year’s Barbenheimer sensation with The Fall Guy, the powers of Ryan Reynolds and John Krasinski teaming up for a cutesy family film with If and a CGI-filled action epic from an established franchise with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Two of the films from these past weeks have already been made available on digital platforms — Challengers and The Fall Guy.

Few periods on the calendar mean more to cinephiles than the two weekends in May occupied by the Cannes Film Festival. Since its founding in 1946, the French festival has been a launchpad for some of the most artistically significant films of all time. The Palme d’Or is one of the most coveted film awards on the planet, and the festival’s ability to balance subversive arthouse work with major Hollywood premieres has led many to view it as the world’s most significant celebration of cinema.
The 2024 lineup featured a mix of buzzy premieres from New Hollywood titans like Francis Ford Coppola and Paul Schrader alongside exciting new works from emerging directors. Between the Main Competition, Un Certain Regard, special screenings, and sidebars like the Directors’ Fortnight and Critics’ Week, the onslaught of new films can be overwhelming for anyone who isn’t able to give the festival their 24/7 attention.
