The film was awarded the main prize at 2012 edition of French AUBAGNE FILMFESTIVAL ex aequo with Australian movie "Toomelah" by Ivan Sen. Since the prize couldn't be split, "EMPIRE ME" was given an alternative main prize named "Prix du Film Rebelle", the Rebel Movie Award, that was only given this year at this festival and deemed fit for a movie that defies all usual categories like this one. Director/Author Paul Poet and Score Composer Alexander Hacke both received this prize.
Clips from the movie were used in 2011 in the music video "Follow the Sun" for Austrian Electroclash-Disco-project "Bunny Lake" (Universal), directed by Paul Poet as well, who also released a Director's Cut with newly filmed narrative scenes.
Clips from the movie were used in 2016 in the very sexual music video "Feel the smell of the spray" by french Techno artist Judith Juillerat (Lentonia Records), directed by Nicotine/Raoul Duke.
A small German Emo Punk band from Osnabrück named themselves "EMPIRE ME" after this movie on forming in 2013.
