Well-made but bleak
gbill-748774 January 2024
A realistic view of a 13-year-old pickpocket in Bulgaria, but rather bleak. It's just as heartbreaking for what we don't see - how bad must her life have been at home to not want to return to her parents when given a chance, how nauseating must the sexual/controlling relationship be with her 50+ year old "mentor," and what's this poor girl's future life is going to be like. The little moments of escapism, like looking at a train through a piece of glass (a marvelous shot), throwing rocks from an overpass at the tanker cars below, or running with a stray dog, all remind us just how much of a child Nina still is, and why she may not see any choices, if indeed, she has any.
