Now This Is What I Like!
g-bodyl11 May 2014
The eighth episode in the second season of Breaking Bad is an utterly fantastic episode. Nothing much happens in the action department, but there is no reason for action this time around. This episode introduces us to a slimeball sleazebag of a criminal lawyer named Saul Goodman. And oh did I love his character! Saul, who is portrayed wonderfully by Bob Odenkirk, is just truly a scumbag but man he is funny and his sarcastic jokes are very much worth watching this episode for.

In this episode, "Better Call Saul," one of Jesse's partners, Badger is arrested by the DEA and no one knows what to do. Jesse and Walt decide to hire Saul to help out, but little do they know who he is. Hank is sent back to his old job and while putting on a tough face, he is suffering from disorder related to the events that occurred in the previous episode.

Overall, such a fantastic episode and is one the best ones yet. The action isn't there, but the drama and even the comedy is definitely present. Based on the conclusion, I'm going to take a wild guess that Saul is here to stay. I think it's also pretty cool that Jesse has fallen in love. I'm eagerly anticipating what happens next. I rate this episode 10/10.

Better Call Saul Catches Up with Breaking Bad
kristi237421 June 2020
When I first watched breaking Bad, this episode would not have meant much to me, but after watching all 5 seasons of Better Call Saul, this is a prominent episode that brings the two series together. There are things that Jimmy says that are so insignificant when watched in 2009, but they have meaning in 2020. I already loved both shows, but now I love them even more! The writing is superb. I am so glad that I decided to revisit Breaking Bad. It is truly the best show ever produced. I will be sad when it is all said and done next year with Better Call Saul. Maybe we will get lucky with a sequel to Breaking Bad.

The episode that gave birth to a new tv show.
caballero-1917 February 2022
Better Call Saul is one of the funniest episodes in the entire breaking bad show and one of my favorites (absolutely) Peter Gould's humor and tension are an excellent mix which is barely seeing in the series. He's a great writer and not surprise he's actually the creator of Saul Goodman, so I see this episode as his little special project with this new character.

It wasn't me, it was Ignacio, he's the one! Y siempre soy amigo, siempre soy amigo del cartel!

A fantastic episode introduces us to a brilliant new character
RicinBeans9422 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
"When the going gets tough, you don't want a criminal lawyer. You want a CRIMINAL lawyer."

That line from Jesse to Walt tells us all we need to know about Saul Goodman. Played by the excellent Bob Odenkirk, this is a man who makes ridiculous jokes and appears at first to be disloyal and dishonest, yet by the end of the episode, he represents Walt and Jesse. Now, while he may indeed be dishonest, you get the impression that loyalty does mean something to Saul.

The episode is great from start to finish. The beginning, while predictable, plays out so well as Badger immediately sees through the entire plan, then falls for it anyway. Odenkirk then has his first scene as he bursts into Badger's interrogation room - and he truly steals every scene he has in this episode.

The plan to make someone the fall guy for Heisenberg is a good one, but surely nothing more than a stall, as Hank will soon realise that Jimmy isn't the guy he's been looking for. The misunderstanding when Badger starts asking a random man for 'the stuff' plays out like a farcical comedy and it's thoroughly entertaining when Walt attempts to distract Hank ("I thought that was you!").

Better Call Saul will, of course, now be the title of an upcoming spin-off based on the character of Saul Goodman. If it can produce episodes anywhere near as good as this, that too will be an excellent show.

Drug dealers need lawyers
Tweekums8 October 2012
Warning: Spoilers
As the episode opens we see a commercial for shyster lawyer Saul Goodman which ends with his slogan 'You better call Saul'. When the episode proper starts we see Badger sitting on a bench advertising the same lawyer; he is soon joined by a skinny guy who is after some meth. Badger accuses him of being a cop, he even points at some parked vehicles saying they are full of cops; when the guy starts to walk off Badger calls him back and after some more banter the deal goes ahead... of course everything Badger said in jest was true and he is soon being questioned in the police station. At this point Saul turns up and says he can get him out for four thousand dollars. Walt goes to his office pay him, claiming to be Badger's uncle and is horrified that Saul's advice is that Badger says everything he knows about his suppliers! Walt obviously can't let that happen and offers him more money but he threatens to call the police... this leads to Walt and Jesse kidnapping Saul to apply pressure; after his initial fears Saul senses an opportunity. Hank meanwhile has returned from El Paso, badly shaken by the events that took place on the border. When he goes back to work he is interested in the street dealer caught with blue meth and sees it as a chance to discover who Heisenberg is. Away from the business Jesse is getting closer to Jane and we learn that she once had a drug problem herself; she has been clean for eighteen months but whether that will last if she is with Jesse is anybody's guess.

This was a great episode; until now Hank has been the main source of the show's laughs but it looks as it Saul Goodman could take that title from him, assuming he becomes a regular character... I certainly hope he does as Bob Odenkirk is great in the role. He wasn't there just to provide laughs though; he points out to them that drug dealers need lawyers like him as it is inevitable that their street dealers will occasionally get arrested and they will also need money management; i.e. laundering big time dealers can't just stash it under the mattress or in an air-conditioning duct! Matt Jones' character Badger also provided some good laughs; firstly in the scene where he was arrested then later when he helped the police catch 'Heisenberg'.

Great to see him again
Adam-0926527 August 2022
I've just finished the series 'Better Call Saul' and decided to watch Breaking Bad again soon after. Arriving at this episode it was an instant nostalgia hit, really nice to see such a legendary character again kicking ass as Saul Goodman.

This series is still as good as i remembered it when i watched it 10 years ago.

It says i have to review with at least 600 characters which is weird so bare with me while i just fill up the extra characters .............................. ........................ ............................ ............................ ....................... ........................... ............................

Great introduction
Leofwine_draca31 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Undoubtedly my favourite episode of the entire show so far, and there are a lot of good ones to pick from. BETTER CALL SAUL introduces the eponymous supporting lawyer character, now with a TV series of his own, and I can see why he's so popular: this slimy lawyer oozes entertainment value and is a hoot from beginning to end. There are no huge events or action here, just consistently good writing throughout.

It's All Good Man!
Hitchcoc1 May 2018
When Badger (one of the duller bulbs on the Christmas tree) is arrested, he threatens the meth business. So it's up to Walter and Jesse to get him out or to soften things. Jesse insists that they hire shyster lawyer, Saul Goodman, to represent Badger. He is a true character and scene stealer and has no scruples when it comes to the kind of gestapo state he sees in the police department. He is also attracted to money, big time. This a great episode where this new character lends a boost to things. Love this show.

Bob Odenkirk/Saul Goodman, steals it!
and_mikkelsen27 March 2023
I Mean... there is a reason Saul Goodman got his own show with six stellar seasons, which btw turned into one of the best TV shows ever! Bob Odenkirk perfectly creates the charasmatic, arrogant lawyer that is Saul Goodman! This was a great introduction to him, and I love the references to events in his show, Better Call Saul, and how it ties in with Breaking Bad!

Other than that, this was a fun creative episode that manages to become perhaps the most iconic of season two, right behind the next episode! The way it is shot and directed is just amazing! Very clever written!

We also get some memorable and Important scenes such as Walts talk with Hank and the last scene with Walt and Saul!

Not a Very Important Episode for the Show, But an Entertaining One Nevertheless
stillworkingfortheknife2 November 2013
In "Better Call Saul", Breaking Bad revolves on one thing and one thing only: the introduction of recurring cast member Saul Goodman, portrayed fantastically by Bob Odenkirk. And I absolutely approve of the bawdy jokes, mischievous charisma, and scene-stealing manner that the most Machiavellian lawyer imaginable brings with him.

But just so you can catch up: in the opening scene, Jesse's henchman Badger is unknowingly selling drugs to a police officer, which wasn't that good of an idea in hindsight. However, it serves as an introduction for the previously referenced Saul Goodman who is tickled pick to bargain with criminals as long as they provide him with a respectable amount of stacks – good for Walt and Jesse whose business made them nouveaux riches. I don't want to give away any more, but I'll say this: prepare for a lot of outstanding scenes. Screenwriter Peter Gould did an extraordinarily good job on this episode and humoristic dialogs are perfectly enacted by the cast, focusing on Walt, Jesse, and Saul this time. Hank also gets his share, but expectedly, even his best moments can't come close to the awesome Tortuga scene in the last episode. While the rest of the main cast stays overlooked for most of the time, Krysten Ritter appears again as Jane and though she shares some nice scenes with Aaron Paul, it's still only a warm-up for season two's last couple of episodes.

That was pretty much all there is to say about "Better Call Saul", an often funny and excellently written episode that only disappoints through the complete lack of action or drama. But that's something I can easily cope with if it's only for one episode.

Gone Bad
schitlipz26 July 2022
I was so excited when it all started because I loved the characters. But I'm sorry to say that it has slowed down to a pace where I am literally forwarding through the "artsy-fartsy" stuff only to get a synopsis. What was once clever has gone bad. Slow-bad. Walking through three feet of mud-slow. Sorry, just being honest. To each their own.

Better Call Saul (#2.8)
ComedyFan201026 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
After a lot of intensity and darker episode we get "Better call Saul" which is a more funny and lighter one.

In this episode we get Badger busted by DEA and Jesse and Walt hiring a lawyer, Saul, to get him out of it but at the same time make sure that Heisenberg doesn't get arrested.

This episode it outstanding. And very funny! Bob Odenkirk has done a lot of comedy before and he is perfect as Saul. Loved every scene with him.

Besides this the show had many more other great scenes. The whole busting in the beginning. Funny how Badger knows its a cop, but then falls for a silly trick. And the whole scene where the false guy gets busted! It was so funny with Walt covering the view, just too good!

A brilliant call
TheLittleSongbird4 June 2018
'Breaking Bad' is one of the most popular rated shows on IMDb, is one of those rarities where every season has either been very positively received or near-universally acclaimed critically and where all of my friends have said nothing but great things about.

Very few shows in recent memory had me so hooked from the very start that before the week was over the whole show had been watched, especially when for a lot of shows now airing watching one episode all the way through can be an endeavour. 'Breaking Bad' had that effect on me, and its reputation as one of the best, consistently brilliant and most addictive shows in many years (maybe even ever) is more than deserved in my eyes. Its weakest season is perhaps the first season, understandable as any show's first season is the one where things are still settling.

Actually everything is established remarkably from the very start, but once the writing and characterisation becomes even meatier the show reaches even higher levels.

"Better Call Saul" is yet another brilliant episode of a consistently great season, one of the season's best. Really loved the character of Saul, who adds an enormous amount.

Visually, "Better Call Saul" is both stylish and beautiful, with photography and editing that are cinematic quality and put a lot of films today to shame, where there are a lot of visually beautiful ones but also some painfully amateurish looking ones. The music always has the appropriate mood, never too intrusive, never too muted.

The writing in "Better Call Saul" is a fine example of how to have a lot of style but also to have a lot of substance. The dialogue throughout is thought-provoking and tense, while also have a darkly wicked sense of humour, nail-biting tension and heart-tugging pathos. The story is texturally rich, intimate, tense and layered, with the pace of it consistently deliberate but taut.

Can't say anything bad about the acting. Bryan Cranston is phenomenal as one of the most fascinating anti-heroes, or even of any kind of character, in either film or television. Aaron Paul has never been better and Anna Gunn is affecting. The characters are compelling in their realism. Bob Odenkirk is wonderfully shady as Saul.

Overall, brilliant. 10/10 Bethany Cox

better call saul!
Vader_vgc20 December 2022
"Better Call Saul" is a fantastic episode of Breaking Bad's second season. The episode focuses on the character of Saul Goodman, a sleazy but lovable lawyer, who is introduced in this episode. The episode does a great job of introducing the character and establishing his role in the series.

One of the highlights of the episode is the performance of Bob Odenkirk as Saul. Odenkirk manages to perfectly capture the character's slippery, conniving personality, while also bringing a sense of humor and charm to the role. The writing in this episode is also top-notch, with clever dialogue and intriguing plot twists that keep the audience engaged from start to finish.

Overall, "Better Call Saul" is a must-watch for fans of Breaking Bad. It's a great episode that sets the stage for Saul's role in the series, and is a great example of the show's high-quality writing and acting.

Excellent episode and a pivotal moment in the series
grantss8 September 2022
I originally watched Breaking Bad about 8-9 years ago. Saul Goodman was one of my favourite characters in the show: funny, arrogant, theatrical, slimy and superbly played by Bob Odenkirk.

When his character got its own spin-off, Better Call Saul, I watched that show and found it great, though not quite as good as Breaking Bad. Now that that show has ended I am rewatching Breaking Bad, to see how things fit together and to watch the original after the prequel.

And this is where it all started. Season 2 Episode 8 is where we meet Saul Goodman for the first time and his effect is telling and immediate. His introduction also eventually leads us to meeting other characters who will have a profound effect on the course of the show.

Not just excellent because of the long-term effect but this is an excellent episode, full stop. Bob Odenkirk is in superb form here and Saul Goodman steals the show.

A perfect introduction for one of the show's most recurring characters
bellino-angelo201420 November 2023
After the death of Tortuga in the previous episode Hank is still shell-shocked, is sent back to Albuquerque and closes himself in his room. Walt goes to Hank and discusses with him about how his cancer diagnosis helped him to overcome his fears, reassuring him to do the same and return to his old work. So Hank returns to his job and goes with his partner Gomez to discuss with Badger, freshly arrested for drug possession. Badger choses for his defense bizarre lawyer Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) who always advertises himself on TV with the slogan Better Caul Saul and is capable of saving many delinquents from critical situations without not many legal ways. After lots of trials and tribulations in the real sense of the word and with the help of James Kilkelly - a man that often goes in jail instead of others - Badger will be again free and Saul proposes to be for Walt what Tom Hagen was for Vito Corleone, and Walt is amazed to see that Saul is more than a simple small-town lawyer.

Saul Goodman's character was great I admit it since it was the first time, but what prevented me to give this episode a higher score it's that the tricks used by Jesse and Walter for forcing Saul to release Badger were slow and dragged the episode unnecessarily for me. Still, good considering the great amount of good episodes in the show.

Lots of good stuff here!

Having started this show so much later than most people, I'm well aware of Saul Goodman's spin-off series, and I can kind of already see why. Odenkirk was fantastic in this episode alone. I've always loved him. He's just got so much charisma. I'd watch just about anything with him in it, so I'm happy he'll be returning for what sounds like the rest of this series. The character is already quite entertaining.

I wasn't expecting a legitimately engrossing moment between Walt and Hank. That was actually kind of nice. This is a relationship I'm very interested in seeing more of. I know nothing about what happens in this show save for a few spoilers, so I'm going on pretty blind.

This was really well paced and directed. The scene halfway through in the desert was shot and acted so damn well.

I feel like the past two or three episodes have finally kicked off what is likely the beginning of the end of Jesse and Walt's lives. And there's still three whole seasons after this. Great stuff.

In this episode we finally get introduced to the legend known as Saul goodman portrayed by Bob odinkirk. One of the greatest characters in fiction with his witty humor and scheming mind that never stops to surprise you which alone gave birth to his magnificent tv show, an extension to breaking bad; better call saul. This episode didnt have action but it didnt need it at all, the impeccable writing alone gives so much drama and excitement especially after watching 5 seasons of BCS before BB. I was especially surprised by the foreshadowing that is only apparent to people who watched better call saul.

One of the better episodes!

Warning: Spoilers
An exciting episode! Mr White, and Jesse have legal problems when one of their dealers is pinched. The viewer realizes that White and Jesse are out of their depth. A great new character is introduced lawyer Sal Goodman! The lawyer is an expert in crime and provides solutions which are funny and entertaining. The over the top law office scene is hilarious. The sub-story of Hank suffering from PTSD and is hiding the problem by putting a fake face about his problem keeps the viewer enthralled because Hank will eventually explode. The two concurrent story lines provide drama and Sal adds humour for a great series. Better Call Saul is well executed episode. I give it an eight out of ten. Love the surprise ending.

Arrival of the best lawyer in the world!
paullwetzel22 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Badger is taken under arrest by the police after a hilarious opening scene in which Badger naively decides to trust an undercover policeman.

Saul Goodman, a criminal lawyer steps up to be Badger's assistance in court.

However, Walt and Jesse soon realise that Saul might advise Badger to drop their names in front of the police to avoid a heavier punishment.

The two threaten Saul to keep Badger quiet and Saul additionally agrees to being their criminal lawyer and advisor.

Saul is such a memorable character, especially in his confrontations with the DEA, he always has a witty front on his lips to keep them quiet.

The contrast between his positive nature and Walt's annoyed attitude is very amusing and promises to produce more laughs in the upcoming episodes.
