A Portrait on a search for Happiness takes us to the Northern Cape, in a modern-day proletariat's quest for diamonds. Director Benjamin Rost did a wonderful job in capturing the sensitivity of the characters' experience.
The film moves the narrative measuredly, often breaking away from each interview into these characters areas, so we get a clear understanding of why they spend their entire days, digging and digging and digging.
The film shows great ability to collide the experiences of three characters: a young father looking to change the fortunes of him and his family, a virtually homeless former cook who once rubbed shoulders with royalty, and a former diamond diver.
A Portrait on a search for Happiness, is a quest of the tangible, but what we can get from it is the intangible, human spirit.
