A group of townspeople adjusts to long term life inside a fortified hardware and garden mega-store, HG WORLD. It soon becomes apparent that the militant managers and constables are hiding something happening in the "Down Under" below the store's sales floor. Meanwhile a United Nations team is cut off from their military headquarters and forced to survive on minimal supplies and weapons. A Royal Air Force pilot finds himself in charge of a hundred soldiers from around the world, many of whom don't share a common language. As they try to work together, they encounter scientists and survivors who may have been part of a conspiracy to spread the virus but let it spin out of control. Meanwhile, a small group of survivors fortifies a small church to protect a group of elderly and invalid worshippers. As the survivors begin to fight amongst themselves and supplies run out, a simple housewife must find the strength to keep everyone fighting the same, true enemy - the hungry dead outside their walls. Through it all, a cult known only as The Brotherhood, explores a strange new relationship between humans and the collective species evolving within them. They believe the plague is simply the beginning of a new hybrid species that will save humanity from its fate and intend to make all survivors part of their great brotherhood.
