- The body of a victim is found in a frozen lake. Booth identifies the body as a rival hockey player, making Booth a suspect in the crime. Now the Squints have to work with a new agent to solve the crime.
- Shortly after Booth is banned to the ice-hockey bench from beating up fire department Pete Carlson, who hits his 'fragile' teammate Wendell Bray, the bully's corpse turns up in a frozen lake. Booth is technically the first suspect, yet remains 'advising.' Bones' team officially works with agent Payton Perotta, who actually digs Booth. Sweets helps examine the key, social team dynamics.—KGF Vissers
- We start at a hockey game? Odd as it might sound, we're not in some backwoods landscape about to stumble across a corpse. Instead, Booth shoots across the ice and puts a serious body check on one of his competitors. "He's the enforcer," Camille helpfully explains to Brennan. Soon, a fight breaks out and Booth beats the living heck out of a goon. Or is Booth the goon?
One month later, a father and son drink beer and ice fish. They drill through the ice and -- wouldn't you know it? --blood explodes from the ground. A decomposed body. Now we're getting somewhere. Moments later, B & B are on the scene. "Let's get this popsicle back to the lab," Brennan says. Hey! A Bones joke! But wait -- Booth finds a necklace on the victim -- the same necklace that Carlson wore. "I'm a suspect," says a shocked Booth. The viewers should be more shocked she didn't ask to bring the whole lake back to the Jeffersonian.
Back at headquarters, Brennan is assigned to work the case with Agent Payton Perotta. Why? Because Booth is, as he so helpfully explained, a suspect. Turns out Payton is quite the cutie and our investigator/ hockey player doesn't waste any time flirting. That ends when Payton (actually Sweets from behind the glass) asks about Booth's abusive father. "Don't ever bring my old man up again!" Booth barks at the doc. Peyton, meanwhile, just wants to know if Booth works out much.
Booth, Brennan and Peyton go to visit the victim's apartment. Turns out the poor guy had financial problems. Worse: His fish are dead and his car tires have been slashed. Peyton finds a post-it note that reads: "Albie Thursday 11 a.m." Who's Albie? No one knows. Back at the lab, Camille theorizes that Carlson was killed by a "projectile through the left eye." But what projectile? No one knows. Hodgins enters with news: water in the victim's throat did NOT come from the lake. It came from the nearby hockey rink. "I find it interesting that the evidence keeps pointing toward Booth," Brennan notes.
B & P (Booth and Payton) arrive at the rink to do a little questioning and soon have two strong suspects. One is a cop named Lou, who Carlson laid out in a hockey game a few days before his demise. The other is a "puck bunny" named Chloe, who had a relationship with Carlson (among others). She admits to slashing the victim's tires because he was sleeping with someone else. Chloe also explains that Carlson was a regular at a poker game run by Albie in the back of a Chinese restaurant. Now we're REALLY getting somewhere.
B & P head directly to said restaurant and kick down the door to the back room. They soon meet Albie, who turns out to be a beautiful young woman. She says that Carlson was frequently in debt, but recently settled up by giving her a bracelet. "If you ever decide to get back into the game, look me up," Albie tells Booth. You got to hand it to the man: He is on FIRE this week.
B & B & P (Booth, Brennan and Payton) return to the ice rink to look for blood. "He was beaten and then a sharp instrument was thrust into his eye," Brennan explains. Booth has an idea. He turns on the overhead black light plus disco ball to search for any hidden blood stains. It's downright romantic (again, FIRE). The mood doesn't last long, however. Brennan discovers a sizable blood streak on the ice. The murder scene at last! (Why doesn't she take the whole rink back to the Jeffersonian?)
Back at headquarters, Hodgins and Angela discover that some of the blood doesn't belong to the victim. The killer was bleeding as well. Hodgins, with the help of the fair-haired intern, also notices that the fish in Carlson's apartment would've eaten each other had they not been fed. So what killed them?
Booth and Peyton, in the meantime, are trying to figure out how to get a blood test from suspect Lou without a warrant. Booth has an idea. "There's a big game tonight," he says. Uh oh. Sure enough, Booth suits up and starts putting the cheap shots to Lou. The cop finally starts spitting up blood -- but not before knocking Booth out cold with a blow to the head. What follows is a bizarre dream sequence in which Booth plays hockey with left winger Luke Robitaille. Why? Because Robitaille was available, that's why. You gonna say no to Lucky Luke? "It's not about the blood," says the hockey star. "It's about what brings the team together." Muses Booth: "The team ... look at the team." What is Robitaille trying to tell our hero?
Turns out Robitaille was right about the blood, however. An intern swabbed Lou's blood but it doesn't match that of the killer. Back at the victim's apartment, Hodgins and Bray are examining the fish tank (the fish died of ammonia poisoning) when they discover a heaping pile of jewelry buried under the rocks. "Buried treasure," Hodgins gasps. "Why the hell was he hiding jewelry in a fish tank?"
The answers come quickly. Turns out the victim, a firefighter, stole from a jewelry store fire and then claimed the items were destroyed. He then cleaned them in ammonia and hid them in the fish tank. Camille is very proud of her boys. Booth, in the meantime, does a little research on the Internet. He discovers that four of the victim's teammates in the club league also worked the same jewelry store fire. "One of these three guys is the murderer," he says. Thank you, Luke Robitaille!
The teammates are brought in for questioning. "We know Carlson was beaten with a hockey stick after which a lace puller entered his brain through his eye and killed him," Brennan says. One of the players was a pro hockey prospect before he was injured. Turns out Carlson was the one who caused the injury. "It's only a matter of time" before they find the killer, Booth warns. At that, one-time potential pro confesses. "I told him to give back the stolen jewelry," the man explains. "He said I was a coward. That I didn't do anything to him back in the day when he wrecked my life and that I wouldn't anything to him now. Well, he was wrong." Indeed he was. DEAD wrong.
Our episode ends with Booth giving Brennan ice-skating lessons. Of course, Booth has to catch Brennan every time she slips. Neither seems to mind. "That Agent Perotta seemed to enjoy working us, but you're the only FBI agent I want to work with," she says. It's as close as were going to get to a love declaration this week. Maybe next.
