Not my sort of thing, maybe yours.

Walked into this film knowing nothing about it. I left still knowing nothing about it. That is because there is nothing too know about it. I don't like criticising films, and I've been thinking recently I may stop, but it has to be said. I found it difficult to stay awake during 'Hotel Atlantico'. It's said to be an unconventional road movie. It sort of is, but so little happens in the film I got bored quick. It was long and tiresome. I appreciate the film was made well on a technical level and some may enjoy it's plot. I didn't however. I didn't like the main character, or any sub characters. I just didn't get it. I'm not even interested in finding out what it was all really about on sub levels or whatever. For me it was just boring. I feel bad saying it as I can see work has gone in, it just didn't work for me. It may work for you.

Offbeat Brazilian drama

Strange drama about an actor who aimlessly travels Brazil. He encounters several people along the way; some of them die, while he himself escapes death at the hands of others.

Hotel Atlântico is a languidly paced and offbeat drama. Its protagonist is a blank sheet to us, other than the fact he is an actor, we know nothing of him. His numerous interactions with people along the way give some clues to his character. These encounters basically make up the film and they vary in interest, although, generally speaking they become less engaging as the film progresses. There are some comical moments and overall the narrative is unpredictable; however, it never really fully engages with the viewer. We never spend enough time with any of the side characters to get a proper hold of them, while the main protagonist remains somewhat unknowable. It all ends on an enigmatic note. And I am still not fully sure what I think it means.

Overall, not great but offbeat enough to be worth checking out. I imagine it would make more sense if you have read the novel beforehand.
