We're wrapping up Their Holiday Favorites, in which members of the Austin film community tell us about movies they enjoy watching during the holiday season. Today's selection is from local composer and Golden Arm Trio bandleader Graham Reynolds.
Reynolds creates, performs and records music for film, theater, dance, rock clubs and concert halls with collaborators ranging from Richard Linklater to DJ Spooky to the Austin Symphony Orchestra. Reynolds' music has been heard throughout the world on stage, film and television, from HBO to Showtime, Cannes Film Festival to the Kennedy Center, as well as radio including BBC and National Public Radio. His score to the 2006 Linklater movie A Scanner Darkly was named Best Soundtrack of the Decade by Cinema Retro magazine. Here's a great video compliation of 150 famous movie lines and catch-phrases that we've come to know and love over the years. The great thing about movie quotes for film geeks like myself, is that whenever the moment presents itself we can always bust out a movie quote to throw into a conversation for a good laugh.
I will say most of these quotes are obvious, but it's still fun. The video below was created by David Balboa. Enjoy!
Here’s a list of each quote from the video, and who said it, from Balboa's blog Exophrine.
“Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!”
- Beetlejuice
- Lydia, summoning Beetlejuice “It’s showtime!”
- Beetlejuice
- Beetlejuice, being summoned. “They’re heeeere!”
- Poltergeist
- Carol Anne Freeling, notifying her parents of the spirits present “Hey you guys!”
- The Goonies
- Sloth, calling the attention of the children he’s about to save “Good morning,...

Movie quotes are the currency by which we pay respect to our favorite films. We grab them out of our pockets at the most appropriate, or inappropriate, times, adding our love of a movie to an advancing conversation. Sometimes these quotes are insignificant lines you and your friends hold near to your hearts but, most of the time, these lines are the ones we all know and love. David Balboa, who runs a blog called Exophrine, edited together 150 of lines and catch phrases just like that into one, cool little video. Included are such diverse films as The Princess Bride, Rocky IV, Aliens, Toy Story, Die Hard, Citizen Kane and many more. Check it out, as well as the full rundown of what's in it, after the jump. Thanks to Balboa and his Exophrine blog [1] for this awesome video. And here's the list of each quote, and who said it,...

It’s 35 years since Jaws hit multiplexes, become an instant classic, made bucket loads of money, turned its director into a star and made bathers think twice before going into the water. Since then we have had some toothless sequels, countless rip offs, lots of movie referencing (Airplane and Back to the Future Part II being the best) and a shark mythology that refuses to die. But what were the essential elements that made Jaws a phenomenon?
In the fourth of our giant sized movie celebration articles (various Owf writers have previously argued for Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Back to the Future and Psycho) and in no particular order here are 50 reasons why Jaws may in fact be the greatest film of all time…
1. The Invisible Shark
Whether it was mechanical shark difficulties or a wise directors’ decision (or probably a bit of both), there’s no denying that less is considerably more with old rubber teeth.

Velvet-voiced singer, actor and activist who broke new ground for black performers
A handful of decades ago the roles for black performers in Hollywood movies were deliberately kept peripheral to the plots, so that their appearances could easily be edited out for screenings in the American south. Black singers and musicians were barred from taking rooms in the same hotels in which they were performing. Partners in an interracial marriage might decide to leave the Us and move to more hospitable locations, such as Paris, to avoid hate mail and threats. All this and more happened to the singer and actor Lena Horne, who has died aged 92.
Horne not only rose above it all, but also significantly contributed to changing the situation. The velvet-voiced, multi-talented Horne first negotiated, and then resisted, the worst that a racist entertainment industry could throw at her. She rose to its summit as an original...
