Byron Allen’s Freestyle Digital Media has picked up La Soga 3: Vengeance, starring Manny Perez as a justice-seeking hitman.
Freestyle plans a digital release to start Dec. 12, 2023, for the Spanish-language crime-focused action thriller that Perez directs and which also stars Ana Lapointe and Felix German as part of a mostly Latino ensemble cast.
“Nowadays, releasing a film is not as easy as people think, so working with the team at Freestyle Digital Media was a blessing, and I’m looking forward to building a working relationship for future projects as well,” Perez said in a statement on Monday.
La Soga 3: Vengeance has Perez playing La Soga, the Dominican Republic’s most dangerous hitman who returns home to fight corruption, only to be targeted by ruthless assassins. He finds himself in a deadly ambush and, to succeed amid the chaos, La Soga joins with his cousin Sixto to unravel...

The mystery of the lost colony of Roanoke has been solved-ish! According to American Horror Story, after the colony relocated in order to find food, they ended up on Roanoke Island, on the same land where the farmhouse now stands. Everything was great, but only because of the human sacrifices the Butcher (Kathy Bates) was committing in order to keep everyone happy and fed, as she prayed to her god, Lady Gaga. One such human sacrifice included a little girl named Priscilla, Aka Flora's friend. The Butcher's son (Wes Bentley) tried to bring up the fact that human sacrifices are rude, so with Lady Gaga's encouragement, the Butcher decided to human sacrifice everybody, so they could all...

There aren’t a whole lot of films being made in the Dominican Republic and most of them are usually shown at international or Latino film festivals. But here’s a Dominican feature film that is getting a limited theatrical release – La Soga (The Rope), directed by Josh Crook. The film, which stars, and was written and produced by Manny Perez, is about a hit man with a conscience who’s after the man who killed his father.
If Perez’s name isn’t familiar, the face should be, since he’s done a ton of movie and TV work since the early 90’s, and this isn’t his first time behind the camera either. He also wrote, produced, as well as starred in the 2002 indie film, Washington Heights.
La Soga looks like a violent, tense thriller, and it’s gotten some good reviews, such as in the N.Y.

A film loaded with interest that somehow fails to be interesting, La Soga is inspired by true events and not much else. A crime drama set in a satellite village orbiting Santiago, Dominican Republic, and occasionally New York City, it tells the story of Luisito (Manny Perez, who also wrote the film), an assassin-for-hire working for the local police and the American government to cleanse drug-dealing U.S. deportees from the streets. Social, moral, and personal themes abound, but are mostly left wandering shoeless among the extras, as Perez and American director Josh Crook get caught up in playing gangster film, Dominican-style.

Press materials paint La Soga as a deeply personal project for actor Manny Perez, who wrote the script drawing on memories of his childhood in the rural Dominican Republic. But the film itself bears little sign of being based on anything besides other movies. As a butcher’s son who becomes an unofficial assassin for the country’s secret police, Perez is merely impassive where he means to seem shell-shocked, stoic instead of brooding. Considering he wrote the part for himself, he either doesn’t know his strengths as an actor, or doesn’t have many. Tearing ravenous hunks off ...

"La Soga" is on track to be the best movie about a vegetarian butcher out this year. The title figure, played by screenwriter Manny Perez, may have learned the trade of butchery from his dad, but seems so disgusted by the stench and blood on the killing room that he refuses to eat meat. Who knew he could be a poster-boy for PETA? The Dominican Republic, where Josh Crook filmed the movie, appears to have no Humane Society rules on killing animals. A 150 pound porky is "euthanized" with a knife to its heart (rather than via cutting its throat since that would release too much blood, which is of value for some reason), and this looks done in real time. A couple of cock fights ensue, and if they're not real, more power to the special effects guys.

My comments on the film selection and the festival's new initiatives follow below. The hot links connect the reader directly to the online catalog of Toronto International Film Festival which will be September 10-17 and will screen 273 features. Last year it screened 249. 242 are world, international or North American premieres, and 71 are first features.
First off, my thanks go to the Toronto International Film Festival for the new City To City Section's selection of Tel Aviv which is celebrating its 100th birthday this year. Ten films have just been announced and there will be a public forum for filmmakers and thinkers from Tel Aviv and Toronto.
I do more than hope that we will not see the "Ken Loach experience" of Edinburgh and Melbourne repeat itself in uglier colors reminding us that September 11, 2001 happened in Toronto as it did everywhere else in the world. “The Ken Loach experience” happened when Ken Loach...

While looking through IMDb, I found that director Josh Crook actually wrote Rise of the Dead but the script is penned by Manny Perez and I'm eager to see this as it's set in both the Dominican Republic and Washington Heights (upper tip of Manhattan) where I lived for a few months.
Here's the synopsis off the facebook page:
"La Soga" is an edgy, action-drama, combining the gritty reality of movies like "City of God" and "Amores Perros." It is the personal journey of a brave man who risks everything to find justice, a visceral and gripping story of redemption that lays bare brutality and corruption.
Trailer after the break, includes English subs!

Curioser and Curioser.. First off, the world premier of road trip comedy Bunny & The Bull which we reported on a Long time ago. Next is Gaspar Noé's Cannes premierer Enter the Void which didn't fare too well.. I'm betting this is a new edit. The winner of the grand jury prize at Cannes, Un Prophete will have a special screening. Hugo Weaving's gritty Aussie thriller Last Ride (we'll have a review up soon, got a screener!) is also playing along with another flick from down under we've been clocking, Beautiful Kate. Let's not forget the world premier of Yoichi Sai's ninja flick Kamui.. plus so many more!
