She has a long history with her first director, Arnaud Desplechin (My Sex Life... They’re the toughest tickets to get right now on Broadway. And on Tuesday morning, seats to Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812, Dear Evan Hansen and Hello Dolly! just got that much harder — as all three shows scored top nominations in their respective categories for the 2017 Tony Awards.
Jane Krakowski and Hamilton alum Christopher Jackson announced the candidates Tuesday morning, live from the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center.
Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 — the Josh Groban-led musical inspired by a 70-page section of War and Peace — led the new musical nominations with 12 in total,...

One of the more high-class problems is struggling to break free of an iconic role that made you a star in the first place. Such is the challenge facing Zosia Mamet, whom most people know only as the high-strung Shoshanna on HBO’s “Girls.” If Shoshanna was the Miranda of her day (as many have said when comparing “Girls” to its predecessor, “Sex and the City”), Mamet has the best chance of the “Girls” crew to have a lasting career. Tony winner Cynthia Nixon, who played Miranda, lands plum film roles such as Emily Dickinson in Terence Davies’ “A Quiet Passion,” and is currently starring on Broadway opposite Laura Linney in the revival of Lillian Hellman’s “Little Foxes.” However, if Mamet aspires to such heights, she must choose better projects than “The Boy Downstairs.”

Regina Giddens, the protagonist of Lillian Hellman’s 1939 play Little Foxes, is a role long sought after by top actresses searching for meaty parts. So it comes as a double treat that the Manhattan Theatre Club’s revival boasts Cynthia Nixon (Sex in City) and Laura Linney (The Big C) switching off as Regina and her mousy sister in law Birdie […]

When Mike Lang was CEO of Miramax Films, he came to Cannes last year with big plans to move into production, and tap the library for remakes. It was an ambitious plan. Now, Lang surprisingly resigned and it’s not exactly clear what Miramax is going to be. We do know its core business is earning cash from managing the library built up by Bob and Harvey Weinstein that came in the Disney sale for over half a billion dollars. Now, Miramax has taken on the library of films that include Guys and Dolls, Wuthering Heights, The Best Years Of Our Lives and The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty. Here’s the announcement: Santa Monica, CA, April 2, 2012 – Miramax and the Samuel Goldwyn Jr. Family Trust today announced that Miramax’s Global Sales team will manage global licensing of the library produced by the legendary Samuel \ Goldwyn. Terms of the agreement are not being disclosed.

Slow and steady tortoises may win races but sometimes we have to stop to celebrate the hares that sprint. In the case of Angela Lansbury, who celebrates her 85th birthday today, we can do both.
<--- Angela in her Tony nominated role from A Little Night Music last season on Broadway. She's won 6 Golden Globes and 5 Tony Awards. Emmy (18 nominations) and Oscar (3 nominations) have eluded her.
Slow and Steady. She's been acting for 66 years and her longterm success is such that she means different things to different generations and may even mean different things to you at different times in your life. For example, when I was a wee lad I thought exclusively of Bedknobs and Broomsticks and as an adult, say "Lansbury" to me and it's like a switch has been flipped and I'll start talking about how great she is as Mrs. Iselin in The Manchurian Candidate. Other...

"Best Pictures From the Outside In" is back. But, oh fiddle, because the series is so infrequent we have to keep explaining it. It's a joint production between Mike at Goatdog's Blog, Nick at Nick's Flick Picks and Nathaniel at The Film Experience. We began in 2008 pairing the most recent winner No Country For Old Men with the first winner Wings and we've been working our way inward ever since from both ends of the Oscar chronology. Get it? Got it? Good. We've now reached 1946 vs. 1989.
These men have been through enough Daisy. Let Hoke take the wheel!
Nathaniel: Just when you get used to things a certain way...
Nothing is more certain in life than change so it's something of a human mystery as to why we're always so surprised or discomforted by it. In the Oscar winners The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) and Driving Miss Daisy (1989), we...
