On behalf of those of us who never had the chance to see it on Broadway, THANK YOU!!

This has to be one of the best DVDs I own. Having not even heard of Rent until the movie came out, I never really knew the story until 2005. It was a great idea to do the movie and an even better idea to release the final Broadway show on DVD. It is making it possible for those of us who only learned of Rent late in the game or for those of us who were too young when it came out or for those of us who don't live in or visit New York to see this amazing piece of theatre. The cast did a great job and Jonathan's beautifully written story will live on in this performance. This story is the heartwarming tale of eight friends, with various issues, including some main ones of living in poverty and the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The music is incredible and it's not all "showtunes" but rather, it is a combination of various styles, including rock, gospel and pop. It makes a statement and it warms your heart. It takes a couple watches of Rent to fully understand the story but once you do, you're captured in its magic for life.

No Movie Like This Movie
Colorscheme28 September 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Twelve years after Rent debuted on Broadway and swept across the consciousness of multiple generations (I'm in X), the curtain closed a final time in the theater on 41st St. That night was a culmination of Larson's realized, unrealized dream, witnessed by his parents and sister, and celebrated by the lucky hundreds in attendance that night. After the disappointment of Christopher Columbus's noble attempt, we finally have a definitive version of the musical to remember it by. This is it. This is the one.

All I could think, through laughter and tears, was "How much money did they spend to make that Hollywood version when all they needed to do was THIS? Set up a camera crew in the Nederlander theater and capture the show as it was intended to be seen."

Roger never sings from atop a butte here. :)

I'm sure there will be a selection of fans who were never able to see the show on Broadway or on tour who first loved the Columbus film and it's soundtrack (it's a great soundtrack, after all) and won't understand this Filmed on Broadway version without the context of being there. But, if you've never seen either version I suggest starting here. And for those of us who have seen it live, once or many times, here it is in a time capsule.

I appreciate the closeups. In the movie theater today, I wanted the crew to pull back a bit and show us the entire stage and staging more often. That's my only gripe and why I rate it a 9 out of 10. Then, I think about it on the small screen in your living room and how tiny the stage would look at that size and understand. This version is meant to take the experience home.

The bricks of the wall at the back of the stage, up where Mimi comes out to play? You can see their texture. I imagined the hands of every girl who played Mimi caressing their surfaces and thought, "We've never seen that before, not so close." The overlapping chorus of Angel buying Collins his coat, Roger introducing Mimi to Mark, and Joanne talking to Maureen on the phone has never been clearer, thanks to the camera cuts. The close-up of Angel as she's leaving the stage in death was beautiful.

The best testament to how well this transported me came afterward. My girlfriend and I walked out of the local cineplex fully immersed in Manhattan. It was jarring to see the trees of the suburbs and not the towers, noise, people, and cabs of the Theatre District. I drove away expecting the City's traffic, maybe a bridge, but we suddenly found ourselves in our hometown. So sad. I was hoping to stop at Grimaldi's.

Captures the power and emotion of being in the theater
bankofmarquis10 July 2020
Every decade, it seems, Broadway produces a transcendent musical. In the 1970's, it was A CHORUS LINE, in the 1980's, it was LES MISERABLES. Jump to the 2000's, you have WICKED and, of course, the 2010's brought us HAMILTON.

The 1990's brought us a "rock musical" that focused on a global pandemic set against the backdrop of social protesting and racial injustices (sound familiar), this musical is Jonathan Larson's RENT.

Following (loosely) the plot of the 1896 opera LA BOHEME, RENT tells the tale of disaffected artists trying to live and love (and make rent) while living their lives the way they wish to live it. Writer Jonathan Larson (who passed, suddenly, the day before previews began) created a powerful, rock driven, story that is poignant, sad and hopeful all at the same time. The original Broadway production Iwhich I am bragging that I saw 2x with the original cast) brought such talent as Jesse L. Martin, Anthony Rapp, Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel to the forefront.

But...skip the film version of this musical (starring most of the original cast) that came out in 2005. It is purfunctuary and lifeless. Instead, seek out the 2008 RENT: FILMED LIVE ON BROADWAY. Like Hamilton, this is a filmed version of the stage show and is able to capture the power and emotion that only live theater can provide.

The cast in this production is outstanding - with the standout being (no surprise) a young Renee Elise Goldsberry (Angelica Schulyer in Hamilton) who shines brightly as Mimi.

Like Hamilton, Rent showcases the power - and purpose - of live theater. A place that I cannot wait to go to again in 2021.

Letter Grade: A-

8 stars (out of 10) and you can take that to the Bank (ofMarquis)

Beautiful
stardoggie12311 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
In a word, beautiful. Now, I must admit I'm biased, given that I've seen RENT on Broadway eight times and can pretty much recite it in my sleep, but by any standards, I think this film is pretty amazing. I came into the whole RENT world fairly late, first falling in love with the 2005 movie and then, after seeing the show, realizing how truly horrible the 2005 movie was. RENT filmed live on Broadway seemed to me like a 'haha, in your face' to Chris Columbus. The perfect simplicity of this movie overshadowed Columbus' mangled, depressing version that was just all wrong.

Although I still missed the thrill of seeing the show live, of applauding along with the rest of the theatre when Mimi begins 'Out Tonight' or when Angel enters for 'Today 4 U,' this movie is pretty much the best you can get without actually seeing the show on Broadway. You see things you might miss live, the faded 'Only the good die young' emblazoned on the back of Roger's jacket, or the look of peaceful satisfaction that crosses Angel's face when Mark finally refers to her as 'she.' All in all, the solos and duets were amazingly done and gave you a whole new perspective on the show.

The one thing I wished the movie had focused more on was the ensemble numbers. For big numbers like 'La Vie Boheme' or 'Christmas Bells,' seeing everyone doing everything at once is kind of the point. When the camera zoomed in on individuals during these scenes, they lost a bit of their impact for me. However, having seen those numbers live previously, it was nothing that bothered me too much.

Overall, though, it was fabulous. As long as RENT is closed and I can't see it at the Nederlander, I'm perfectly happy with watching this version at home.

Everyone should watch this.

Warning: Spoilers
It's kinda sad that my favorite theater production has closed on Broadway after a 12-year run, even if I would never have gone and watched it there anyway. This movie was the final performance, captured on film.

I think it's unavoidable that I would draw comparisons between this cast and the casts of the touring troupe I watched in Singapore and the original cast whose album I've played over and over. And also unavoidable that I would think this cast doesn't quite compare, simply because it's a much more spiritual experience to watch Rent live, and because I'm so familiar with the original cast recording.

Most of the cast I was fine with, but I thought Renee Goldsberry, who played Mimi, was a bit too feral and not vulnerable enough, and Justin Johnston, who played Angel, wasn't feminine enough. There was also a bit too much energy in the air, which is understandable, since it was the last performance, but while it worked for the faster numbers, it made the emotional scenes a bit too dramatic.

But I quibble, the actors perform well and the director knows the production intimately enough to have the cameras capture all the right angles to best highlight each scene. And this is Rent - I went through the same emotional roller-coaster as when I first watched it. And while this isn't quite the same as watching it live, it comes pretty darn close. Everyone should watch this.

My favorite rock opera, in it's entirety
I_Love_Spielberg9 April 2009
RENT is an updated version of "La Boheme" about a group of bohemian artists striving for their art while facing the dangers of paying the rent, poverty, illness, and the AIDS epidemic.

My first introduction to RENT was through the Chris Columbus film. I thought it was wonderful, and even since I saw that version, I've wanted to see the stage production. But seeing as where I live, it was impossible. Then learning that it was closing on Broadway, it broke my heart even more. But then, I learned that the final performance was going to be filmed. I was so happy, that I wanted to see it, but other things got in the way. After a while, I thought I would never see it, until it came out on DVD on February 3rd. I rented it, and I saw it, and I loved it. It feels so good to see the stage production that it's all I watch now. I won't even disregard Columbus' film, but there's something about this one that just stayed with me. Plus, I, of course, cried like a baby watching.

Please see this.

Powerful movie
waitingshark20 December 2015
This is my all-time favorite! They are poor, they might get lost, they are at the bottom of the society, but they are brave and dare to love, to live. This film inspired and encouraged me at those gray days. I saw it a couple of times and I still want to see it soon. 2 years ago, I finally got to see it at off-Broadway. It was as touching and powerful as the movie if it was not more. After all, the movie is an adaptation of the play. I think I cried till the end of the play after the intermission... The music in this movie fits a lot with the theme. Lyrics are delicately written. You do not need to be a rock music lover to like this movie. You can not miss this one.

My faith in Rent is Restored!!!!!!!!!
gir700027 June 2013
Let me start my review by saying I grew up with Rent as a kid with the original cast recordings. I've seen it on Broadway, and few other big cities. I have high standards that are maybe a little too high for my favorite musical. After seeing the watered-down gleeish movie version in high school(I could go on), and seeing a bad traveling version I almost gave up on Rent. Five years later, I come across what I've always wanted: a recording of the stage show! I went in with my doubts but I think this is probably the next best thing to seeing the Original cast. Hell, I knew I wanted to buy it ten minutes in. It's a shame they didn't make this for the last original cast show, but i digress. It brings forward the true feeling of Rent, something the film didn't do. Not to mention you get to hear ALL the music, and see the story Jon Larson wrote. The actors aren't perfect at all times, I feel some seem like their copying their character voices from the OBC. and some lack the power and or soul for their role, but this is really nip picky of me because you can tell they LOVE the show. As Rent-heads do I'll say my favorites I really like Mark, Moreean, and Collins! I felt Me-me seemed a little to tamed didn't have the full edge of mi-mi. Roger and Angel were OK, but I didn't think their voices were up to belt this stuff like it should be. Joanna, the same Joanna from the movie, was even MORE awesome then she was in the film. I finally feel like I can watch Rent again without all that Hollywood watered down hairspray covered cheese wiz (Rent deserved better!). Viva La vie Boheme!!!!!!!

Good document of the stage show.
CriticsVoiceVideo17 March 2021
It's great to have a document of the live stage show. The cast is ok. The weakest link is Will Chase. He's just not right for the role and I prefer a Latina in the role of Mimi so it's not the best cast but still good to have on file and it's better than the film version.

One of my favorite "movies", despite its flaws
ardenyoung-2586610 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I gave this a ten because of how important this play is to me. It's one of my favorite "movies", despite its flaws. I watched it for the first time almost ten years ago in school. I loved it since then and have watched it once or twice a year ever since.

This is my favorite version of Rent. While the original cast is OBJECTIVELY the best, since this was the first production I watched, this is my favorite cast. They all capture their characters so well. The movie is good too, but they cut a lot out of the play version, and this one has it all ("Goodbye Love", "Halloween", etc.)

Speaking of which, I LOVE THE SONGS!! Seriously, the lyrics and music are so so good. I love the rock vibe, they're all so catchy and fun, my favorites being "What You Own", "One Song Glory", and "Another Day".

The story is raw, gritty, and real. It is so sad and emotional, but uplifting at the end. It shows we have to live in the moment, and we have to live every moment like its our last. This play captures real life: poverty, illness, love, sex, addiction, depression, etc. It focuses on being an artist, either diving into work to block out the pain or, in contrast, doing NOTHING. Roger and Mark are two sides of the same coin and must learn to meet in the middle, to pursue their artistic work without "giving up" or "selling out."

Speaking of characters, Roger is my favorite. His depression is so real, after getting over his addiction, he now has aids, and knows he will die soon. A lot of the characters have aids, and they all have different perspectives in their illness (whether to give up or live it up). Roger and Mimi could be considered toxic, but to me, they are so REAL. They are my favorite couple, but let's also mention all the gay couples!! This was a big deal when this play came out in the 90s. While there are some stereotypes in here, the fact that there are openly queer characters in this is amazing. This was when I first learned about gay people (shocking, I know). Also, I am queer myself, so this movie was not only a wake-up call, but an awakening.

So, this play is NOT perfect at all. But it is so meaningful to me. The message is so important, the songs are all great, the acting in this version is AMAZING, the characters are all so REAL, and the story is what stands out. My favorite musical hands down, and one of my favorite "movies" (I'm so glad this was filmed!!)

Thank you, Jonathan Larson!

It says "Live on Broadway"....They LIED
OZgRL2159 August 2009
Warning: Spoilers
While I love Rent with a passion this "officially sanctioned" DVD is majorly lacking. The final cast was not it's best. and I really don't like how they claim its the "Final performance" this DVD was made over a course of three performances and only a small portion is from the final show on 7 September 2008. They lied.

I love Will Chase and he could not have been a finer Roger. Kantor was a horrible Mark but he did work well with Will in 'What You Own' and Renee probably was the most shining element of the show. Her 'Out Tonight' was majorly fierce which was a major lacking part of the 2005 film. Tracie Thoms; the one person everyone wanted to see in the final months. Her Joanne live wasn't that great but then again her Joanne in the film wasn't great either.

Gwen Stewart in her ensemble roles and the Seasons of Love Soloist was the greatest part like always.

The filming of this looks like Mtv butchered it by making it all music video like with sixteen different bad closeups and camera angles.

Go see the Tour or amateur productions. This is not worth it. Seeing it live with your own eyes in a theater is so much better.

Clumsy
maryduran6 July 2017
I am for filming Broadway shows. Once they close they can show the play on PBS whatever, Now I wasn't happy with the theatrical version of the film adaption of "Rent". However it was well made. This version is terrible!

The director of this film was a poor choice he keep cutting away from very important moments that the actors are striving to get across. The major musical sequence has too many cut away's and the actors suffer because the director and editors failed them. The actors did not fail the material.
