Pretty bad.

The plot of the movie was ok but it needed a director. The actors seemed like this was there first high school play. The dialog just wasn't realistic. This could have been helped some by a decent director. The characters weren't likable and you kind of wanted to see them all killed by the beast. The CGI was bad of course but I never expect much there on these low budget projects. It's not the worst of them out there but is trying to be a contender.

Par for the course

Warning: Spoilers
REPTISAURUS is a typical cheap TV movie in which a bunch of uninteresting and interchangeable characters are stranded and trapped on a desert island with a giant CGI creature that proceeds to eat them all up. The cast is entirely uninteresting, aside a cameo from old-timer Gil Gerard, best known as TV's Buck Rogers. The creature itself is a reptilian mix of bat and snake, but the effects are typically bad, particularly the cheesy gore scenes of it devouring victims. The film goes down the usual routes without ever innovating or proving to be very exciting; it's very much par for the course.

This was phenomenally bad...

Granted, with a movie named "Reptisaurus" and having the cover that it did, then I must admit that my hopes and expectations for this 2009 movie weren't particularly high.

But still, I sat down to watch it, as once in a while these creature features turns out to be rather enjoyable. However, "Reptisaurus" was definitely not one of those movies. This was laughable at best.

First of all, the storyline was so simple that it could have been written by a fifth grader. There were next to no proper contents to the storyline presented here by writer Jeremiah Campbell and director Christopher Ray. If you manage to endure through the entire movie, which is a massive ordeal, then you just essentially switch off your brain and sit back and watch the movie.

The acting in the movie was as expected - mediocre at best. There weren't actually any outstanding performances. But I believe that the actors and actresses weren't to blame here, it was the questionable character gallery and the shoddy dialogue that were weighing them down and holding them back. I mean, you wash up on a remote island, and suddenly you don't recognize the whirring sound of helicopter rotor blades, wait, what? Seriously? Yeah, the writing for this movie was exactly that stupid.

This being a creature feature, and one with a reptilian creature at that, then you would need to have a proper CGI department to bring the creature to life on the screen in a noteworthy and believable manner. The people working on "Reptisaurus" didn't have that department, and the CGI was hilariously bad. It was seriously some of the worst CGI animation of a creature in a movie I have seen in a long time. And even the performers weren't even buying into it.

"Reptisaurus" is not worth the time, money or effort, and you might as well give it a wide berth. Some of us suffered through it, so you don't have to.

My rating for this movie is a mere two out of ten stars. And this movie will never be played a second time in my house.

About your average SyFy Channel movie.

Well There is a cgi monster which varies in size from shot to shot, it has no motivation for just killing everyone it encounters (not hungry, not scared, not territorial) although the characters are so bland that death is a sweet release for them.

Honestly, I was a huge fan of the original comic (Charleton Comics give you more!) back in the early '60's and the producers using the name is why I watched it. The credits claim this was based on the comic - it wasn't, it was just a misuse of the name.

Not-so-mysterious island

You might recall the B-movie THE GIANT CLAW - it was a decent enough monster movie sabotaged by the producers skimping on special effects and producing (ahem) a real turkey.

This movie is just the reverse. The CGI monster looks reasonably convincing but the rest of the film does not. I watched till the end but I am not sure why.

Plot, dialogue, acting and sets are, well, pretty ordinary.

I don't remember the comic book that is said to have inspired it.

BUCK ROGERS fans may be interested to see Gil Gerard as the general in a couple of scenes back at headquarters, though he is mostly just sitting at his desk.

Why??

I do enjoy movies that are supposed to be serious, but are really quite funny due to special effects, dialogue or characters. I cheered when the creature did the blonde in, she was so annoying. The dialogue was bad. Surprised Gil Gerard was in this. All in all, it was worth the laugh. Definitely won't be on my re-watch list.

"I can't believe I made this thing"

Warning: Spoilers
A military project on a far flung island somewhere creates the titular Reptisaurus. (A cross between a bat and a snake!). The creature having gone rogue a special force of two soldiers is sent to kill it. Complicating the situation are five civilians washed up on the same island. Cue lots of shooting, walking around a forest and mayhem, chaos and panic. It's a poor film. People act like no person ever would. The CGI monster seems to change size all the time. The characters are not interesting and are played by amateurish actors. Even Gil Gerard as a fanatical general could not overcome the bad dialogue given to him. It's never explained where the island was, where the civilians came from and how they were stranded on the island. Being a low budget film it does have some stock footage of military hardware. A rather underwhelming movie.

A real tour de France

Reptisaurus is something else, a truly outstanding example of low budget film making done right. The premise of the film is typical, and not too original but where the film really starts to shine are the quiet moments where director Christopher Ray takes the time to develop his characters. For example, Commando #1, and Guard were exceptionally convincing, almost to the point of tears. Though small parts I find that it is the collective weight of small but powerful performances that coalesce into a solid piece of art and help define a film worth watching. Also pulling her weight is Caroline Attwood, who proves that she is more than just a pretty face. She also starred in the ICP classic 'Death Racers' which was another fantastic film, and proof that the ICP and their juggalo clowns are a fierce artistic force to be reasoned with.

In conclusion, Reptisaurus is a fine film with a predictable premise but Caroline Attwood's face and some excellent performances. It could have done with some more ICP and maybe some nudity but otherwise I liked this even more than Baise Moi

A good action-packed monster movie, but not an excellent one

Warning: Spoilers
I liked the opening part where the two camouflaged soldiers are moving cautiously and quickly and are aiming for the beast in the skies because there is exciting action and this film likes to lengthen the time the characters (in another scene more characters are there) are on the lookout for Reptisaurus (which also makes it exciting, I like lengthy hunting sequences instead of short ones). The actors were perhaps not excellent but I think they did a good job and the dialogue was compelling and made me interested to hear what was going on, the actors' performance as a whole would get an 8/10 from me. The CGI for Reptisaurus wasn't perfect but Reptisaurus' height seemed to be consistent and its movements were good and not that bad, although some of Reptisaurus' head movements from side to side looked unrealistic but on the whole the CGI for Reptisaurus would get an 8/10 from me. The military major played his heroic and commanding role well, the jokester with the yellow shirt also gave funny comedy, the women really brought out and expressed the fear and anguish they were feeling from being suddenly stranded and experiencing this monster (new threat), the other man in the civilian group on the island also played a good leader/planner role but he didn't have as many plans as I thought he would have. The film is a bit unrealistic in that the creature is created by mixing snake and bat parts together in a lab but the plot nicely blends in the lab part to make the connection that Reptisaurus stays in a cave, because it's part-bat, and is bulletproof with thick mutated skin, because it's part-snake, so that was good. The tension and fighting between the characters in the lab (because the major was unable to save of the civilians) was a very good idea and made me quite thrilled. The music in the film was very good and reminded me of the music in 80s and 90s action films, or in a series like Walker Texas Ranger. At times the music brought out the tension and at other times it showed the excitement. The male doctor perhaps could've done a more convincing acting job but he still acted well and his greed for money and his disgust at the High Military Officer's (a Military Officer ranked higher than the Major) words was good acting. It was quite confusing as to why Reptisaurus wasn't trying to eat the people in close range when the bullets had little to no effect on it which made the film a little more unrealistic. The plot as a whole was well executed. The running time is 81 minutes and the most is made out of every second of the film which is a good thing (unlike the 2015 Josh Trank Fantastic Four film, for example, which wasted a lot of time going over unnecessary stuff). Overall this film is a good film and I would watch it again with a friend who hasn't watched it before so that we can enjoy it together.
