It looks like “Dune: Part Two” reinvigorated the box office so well last weekend that it had to take a backseat to a perfectly-timed family animated sequel in its second weekend. Read on for the weekend box office report.
DreamWorks Animation and Universal knew that they were likely to have a big hit with the animated sequel “Kung Fu Panda 4,” returning Jack Black to the popular martial arts cartoon character Po, which would benefit from the character’s presence on streaming, as well as from the lack of animated movies in theaters. The mostly positive reviews put “Kung Fu Panda 4” at 70% on Rotten Tomatoes, and being the only animated feature for family audiences allowed it to bring in $19.25 million on Friday, including $3.8 million from Thursday previews. Universal has estimated it winning the weekend quite soundly with $58.3 million in 4,035 theaters, and audiences were generally positive, giving it an “A-” on audience polling site CinemaScore.

In the modern movie world of “franchise” cinema, there’s one thing more difficult than making a sequel: making a sequel to a sequel. Most sequels tend to either try to double down on what made the original so great or, alternatively, attempt to take things in a more expansive new direction. The third film or “threequel” poses something of a unique quandary though. The concept of the “threequel” isn’t a new one, in fact it is almost as old as cinema itself. The very first “threequel” arguably arrived all the way back in 1907 with George Méliès‘ The Haunted Castle, the third in a trilogy of silent films that began with The Kingdom of the Fairies (1903).
However, modern filmmakers face an increasingly tricky task with threequels. Essentially, they either need to find a satisfactory way to wrap up the story or alternatively inject fresh blood into proceedings with a...

August has arrived, and with it, the last full month of summer-worthy shows and flicks, at least for 2023. From all the summer sensations to food weather, carnival fun and, of course, the lack of school, the streamer’s film slate will update with some appropriate flicks like “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2,” “Eat Pray Love,” “Despicable Me” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” respectively.
If you’re one of those who senses the change in the air as soon as the salty summer heat gives way to crisp fall fog, “Heartstopper” Season 2, complete with its cartoon drawings of leaves, waits for you starting August 3. “The Lincoln Lawyer: Season 2 Part 2” concludes the two-part followup to the legal drama starring Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. “Heart of Stone,” a big tentpole film starring Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan, promises action-lovers a good time.

With its list of new releases for August 2023, Netflix is giving the anime world another shot.
No, we’re not talking about the streamer’s usual anime offerings – which are present this month in the form of Ragnarok season 3 (Aug. 24) and other titles – we’re talking about Netflix’s attempt to make live-action anime adaptations a thing. Following the relative failure of its Cowboy Bebop remake, Netflix is giving it another go, this time with arguably an even bigger anime classic. One Piece will premiere on Aug. 31. Telling the story of beloved straw hat wearing pirate Monkey D. Luffy, this adaptation will attempt to do original creator Eiichiro Oda and his many fans proud.

With its list of new releases for July 2023, Prime Video is going to help you stay safe from the oppressive July sun.
Highlighting the Amazon Originals on the TV side this month are two heavy hitters. The first is The Horror of Dolores Roach on July 7. Based on a podcast of the same name, this series could best be described as a modern day Sweeney Todd? Why, you ask? Well you know why. Think about it. Then season 2 of Neil Gaiman adaptation Good Omens premieres on July 28. This season will follow angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tenant) as they seek to keep the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) away from both heaven and hell.
There aren’t any Amazon Original movies of note this month and that’s alright as the influx of library titles is more than enough. July 1 sees the arrival of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, No Country for Old Men,...

The second season of original series “Almost Paradise” is set to premiere on Freevee on July 21. When hypertension forces DEA agent Alex Walker (played by Christian Kane) into early retirement, he moves to the Philippines in hopes of a quieter life. But unfortunately for him, he can’t avoid danger. Soon, the local police ask him to help solve a series of serious crimes.
Watch the “Almost Paradise” Season 2 trailer:
Also coming to Amazon’s free streaming service in July is the incredibly meta action series “Ze Network.” In the show, David Hasselhoff plays himself as he takes a gig at an English-language theater in Germany — and we all know that Germans love David Hasselhoff. However, once there, he is recruited into an elite society of super-spies, who must work together to prevent a dangerous plot from striking the nation.

With its list of new releases for May 2023, Amazon Prime Video is increasing its global reach.
The streamer’s biggest original offering this month is a German series. Hohlbeins’ – The Gryphon, based on the works of Wolfgang Holhlbein, will present a sprawling fantasy tale about three teens discovering a fantastical world called The Black Tower where “the Gryphon, a world-devouring monster, mercilessly subjugates all living creatures.”
The only other original title of note in May is Freevee comedy Primo on the 19th. Written by author and journalist Shea Serrano and produced by Michael Schur (The Good Place), this coming-of-age series will follow a teenager balancing “college aspirations, societal expectations, and a hectic home life on the south side of San Antonio.”

As befitting its status as one of the world’s biggest companies, every now and then Amazon likes to take a big swing with its Prime Video originals. With its list of new releases for April 2023, the streamer is taking one of its biggest swings yet.

Starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, this spy series is described as “an expansive and groundbreaking global event comprising a mothership series and several local language satellite series.” This means that the Russo Brothers-produced project will eventually feature several spinoffs in multiple countries and languages around the world. With its rumored nine figure budget and apocalyptic source material, Noah Baumbach’s “White Noise” marks a bit of a departure from the director’s previous sensibilities. But after successfully adapting Don DeLillo’s unfilmable novel, Baumbach is already thinking about his next challenge.
Speaking to IndieWire on the red carpet of the New York Film Festival, Baumbach made it clear that he’s not done experimenting with different genres. In fact, he’s starting to think about tackling a musical.
“I would love to make a musical at some point,” Baumbach said. “Many of my movies tease a musical at some moments.”
After seeing the dance sequence set to a new LCD Soundsystem song in “White Noise,” the idea of the “Kicking and Screaming” director taking on a musical might not seem so far fetched. But while he loves the idea of making a musical, Baumbach doesn’t have...

Do one for them; do one for you. If you can still do projects for yourself, you can keep your soul.
— Martin Scorsese: A Journey
Many creatives have pointedly or inadvertently taken Martin Scorsese’s career advice. One has to hit it big in order to have clout in Hollywood. Often, it takes clout to make passion projects. Do one for them; do one for you. If you can still do projects for yourself, you can keep your soul.

Filming fishermen working on dark Gloucestershire waterways at night is challenging enough technically for most cinematographers. But this feat, brought off with panache by “The Elvermen” Dp Anna MacDonald – competing in the Camerimage Documentary Shorts section this year with an atmospheric account of obsessive amateur eel hunters – was just half the battle.
A substantial additional challenge, says MacDonald, is that the eels in question, a catch once prized at more than their weight in gold, are tiny, nearly transparent offspring “like the size of a glass noodle.”
They’ve been known as elvers for millennia and just about everything about them is mysterious – even how the spawn of the European eel ended up in Britain’s West Country is a tale for the ages (and they apparently have a different name from eels because the young of the species are so distinct in appearance from adults that it was believed...

In an unusual show of consensus, reduced-price titles, a new PVOD title, and several independent films dominated all streaming charts. “Godzilla vs. Kong,” still #5 in theaters in its eighth weekend, followed its initial 31-day HBO Max play with PVOD availability. It placed #1 on both revenue sites, and was #3 and the best high-price title at those who rank by transactions.
The good news is “Godzilla vs. Kong” is thriving on PVOD at $19.99. The bad news is an awful lot of people don’t seem to be aware of the value of HBO Max, where it costs $14.99 for one month and allowed customers to see the same film in March. It suggests an ongoing marketing issue and, at the start of 2022, there will be another challenge when HBO Max customers realize that Warner Bros. titles no longer play day and date with theaters.

Liam Neeson thriller “The Marksman” defied pandemic norms with a three-month theatrical window. Five months after its release, it’s now available to rent at the standard-price $5.99 after a late-April Premium VOD debut. It claimed the #1 spot on all charts calculated after the mid-week shift. That includes FandangoNow, which ranks entries by the revenue accrued. That means it had more than triple the number of rentals as their #2 title, “Nobody,” which still costs $19.99.
VOD platforms otherwise saw ongoing success for familiar films, including “The Little Things.” The Denzel Washington action title was #1 at Spectrum, which as usual lags in reporting.
Noteworthy this week is the debut of three fresh titles, two of which are recent releases that went directly to standard pricing and saw immediate interest. “Together Together,” a comedy starring Patti Harrison and Ed Helms, and “French Exit” both saw traction. However, the real breakout is “North Hollywood,” apparently...

"Has Hollywood developed an allergy to originality?" A good question! This was made in 2012, and it first premiered in 2014, but it's still as relevant as ever nine years later. Allergy to Originality is an amusing animated short film about a conversation between two people at a movie theater. It's about originality, or really, it's a defense of the lack of originality insomuch as referencing the truth that pretty much every idea or thought is a derivation of something else / someone else's thoughts. This short was created in 2012, and the marquee features some of the biggest movies that summer: Men in Black 3, Madagascar 3, Prometheus, Dark Shadows, The Avengers, and Snow White (and the Huntsman). Featuring the voices of Ian Picco and Spencer Thun. I don't entirely agree with all the points made in this, but it is interesting to consider. And there's also a good follow-up interview with filmmaker...

It’s safe to say that the Covid content drought is just about over. Netflix prides itself on being the most, let’s say, prolific streaming service in the game. With its list of new releases for May 2021 it’s once again revealing why.
There is a lot going on for Netflix this month and it all starts with some high profile original films. Zack Snyder’s latest zombie effort Army of the Dead premieres on May 21. That will be preceded by Monster, the adaptation of Walter Dean Myers’ classic YA book, on May 7 and Amy Adams Rear Window-esque The Woman in the Window on May 14.

Exclusive: Universal Pictures and Working Title have an updated feature version of The Borrowers in development, based on the Mary Norton book series of the same name. Sausage Party and The Addams Family filmmaker Conrad Vernon is in talks to helm off a screenplay by Patrick Burleigh.
The Borrowers is an action adventure that follows a family of tiny people who live secretly in the walls and floors of an English house and “borrow” from the big people in order to survive. Working Title and Polygram, which was later absorbed by Universal in 1998, originally released a live-action feature adaptation in 1997 starring John Goodman and Jim Broadbent, and directed by Peter Hewitt. The pic grossed close to $23 million at the domestic box office. Similar to the first movie, the new version will be a live-action take, I hear.
Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are producing. Alexandra Loewy, president...

Sacha Baron Cohen shot to fame for playing multiple characters like Ali G, Borat and Bruno on television before taking them to the big screen, but with the exception of Showtime satire Who Is America?, the 48 year-old has spent the majority of the last decade tackling more straightforward movie roles.
That being said, he’s hardly been prolific, having only appeared in eight films in the last ten years, and even then that includes a voice-only role in Madagascar 3 and a brief cameo in Anchorman 2. Baron Cohen will next be seen in Aaron Sorkin’s prestige drama The Trial of the Chicago 7, which might lead you to believe that he’d made an effort to branch out from the genre that made his name, especially when you consider that his last attempt at big screen comedy in Grimbsy was largely dismissed by critics and bombed at the box office.

Ageism may be a significant problem in Hollywood, but not at Aarp’s “Movies for Grownups” Awards, where actors over 50 are revered like fine wine — and honored for getting better with age. Inevitably, there were some jokes about the ceremony’s name: “When I was asked to attend an award show called Movies for Grownups, I assumed you were honoring me for my career in pornography,” cracked Conan O’Brien, who introduced Adam Sandler, teasing him for his eagerness to receive the Best Actor award. “You’re like a chimp that saw a banana.”
Before the ceremony began, Sandler reflected on his own “grownup” performance. “I understand what they’re saying because I certainly don’t want my kids to watch ‘Uncut Gems,’ ” Sandler told Variety. “But I think any movie at any age can connect with you. I go to these animated movies with my kids and I love them.

We have the highlights of what's coming and going from HBO Now and HBO Go in January 2020.
A new year will eventually mean a new HBO with the release of HBO Max. But for now HBO Now and HBO Go continue on and are putting their best foot forward with the HBO new releases for January 2020.
Comedy is the name of the game for the HBO originals in January 2020. Larry David returns as Curb Your Enthusiasm season 10 premieres on January 19. Veep creator Armando Iannucci takes his satirical ways to space with Avenue 5 the same night. The New Pope is...sort of a comedy and arrives on January 13. The Stephen King series The Outsider is very much not a comedy but it will come to HBO on January 12 all the same.

DreamWorks' animated film "Home" easily took first place at the domestic box office by grossing $54 million, marking the best opening for a DreamWorks Animation film since "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" ($60 million) in 2012. "Home" added another $48 million from overseas for a worldwide debut of $102 million. The new movie cost $135 million to make, which means that it's now considered a hit. Unfortunately, "Home" has an unimpressive 47% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes. The other new wide release of the weekend was the comedy "Get Hard," starring Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart. It took second place with $34.6 million. A great result for a movie that cost $40 million. "Get Hard" has a 31% fresh rating. Meanwhile, "It Follows" horror film expanded to 1,218 location to take fifth place at the box office with $4 million. The new movie has now earned a total of $4.8 million and will likely get an even wider release next weekend. "It Follows" has an amazing 95% fresh rating.

DreamWorks Animation only has one release in 2015, "Home." Considering how much investors constantly scrutinize the studio that put a lot of pressure on the publicly traded company and its marketing and distribution partner, 20th Century Fox, to turn it into a hit. After Friday's opening, CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg can take a huge sigh of relief. "Home" took the top spot on its opening day with $15.6 million. Since pre-release polling indicated strong family interest (it's a CG animated movie) it should perform even better on Saturday and possibly even Sunday. That means it could end up with $55-58 million over the three-day and become DreamWorks Animation's biggest opening since "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" earned $60 million in June 2012. No matter where it falls, "Home's" opening takes some pressure off 20th Century Fox who consistently underperformed with Dwa Films domestically since "The Croods" was a surprise hit two years ago. It's...

A week ahead of its U.S. debut, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies began its international victory lap this weekend.Playing in 37 markets*and only seven major ones*the finale of Peter Jackson's second Middle Earth trilogy earned a massive $122.2 million. Its top territory was Germany, where its $20.5 million debut was easily the biggest of the year.It also had huge openings in the U.K. ($15.2 million), France ($15.05 million), Russia ($13.75 million), Brazil ($6.8 million), Mexico ($6.3 million), and New Zealand ($1.8 million). It wasn't particularly impressive in Japan ($2.4 million), though it's rare for a live-action import to do much business there.Across all of these markets, The Battle of the Five Armies opened above the previous two installments in the Hobbit trilogy. Each of those movies wound up with over $700 million overseas; based on this opening, that seems like a likely outcome for Five Armies as well.Next weekend,...

In South Korea, it was up 11 percent to $15.8 million, which brings its total to a stunning $35.9 million. Within a week, it will be the highest-grossing live-action import since Iron Man 3.The movie also held on to first place in the U.K. ($6 million), Russia ($5.5 million), France ($3.9 million), Germany ($3.8 million), Australia ($3.25 million), Italy ($3.1 million) and Spain ($2 million). So far, Interstellar is tracking 14 percent ahead...

Amir here, reporting to box office duty. Finally, the day cinephiles have been waiting for all year has arrived. America gets the chance to see one of our greatest working directors bring his epic vision to the screen. I speak, of course, of Frederick Wiseman's National Gallery, which opened on one screen to respectable returns. Others were too busy checking out Big Hero 6 and Interstellar. Disney's animated film actually topped the charts – I did not expect it to overcome Nolan's juggernaut, if I'm being honest – but both film finished with more than $50 in the bank. This is an incredibly rare feat: even though it's happened for the third year in a row now, it's only the fourth time that two films open with 50+ numbers. On all three previous occasions, an animated film beat a live action one: Wall-e and Wanted, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted and Prometheus, and...

The holiday movie season kicks off this weekend with a massive sci-fi showdown: Christopher Nolan's Interstellar and Disney Animation's Big Hero 6 each appear poised to open north of $50 million this weekend. If each movie does clear that threshold, it will be only the fourth time in history that this has happened: there was Wall-e and Wanted in 2008, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted and Prometheus in 2012 and Monsters University and World War Z in 2013. In each of those cases, the animated movie came out on top, which may be an indication about what's to come this weekend. After a two-day run in 249 theaters, Interstellar expands to around 3,500 locations on Friday. The sci-fi adventure finds Matthew McConaughey leading a team of Nasa explorers (including Anne Hathaway) across the universe in search of a new home for mankind. One of the movie's main selling points is the fact that it was directed by Christopher Nolan,...

The first official poster for Penguins of Madagascar has been unveiled.
The DreamWorks animated movie focuses on the exploits of the original Madagascar films' coup-devising birds, Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private, who since the events of Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted have joined an elite undercover task-force.
The original voice cast from the previous Madagascar films are joined by Benedict Cumberbatch - who provides the voice of Classified the wolf, team leader of the heroic North Wind espionage group - and John Malkovich, who plays the animated picture's villain Dr Octavius Brine.
Described as a "spy thriller", Penguins of Madagascar was part of the DreamWorks preview offering at this year's San Diego Comic-Con.
Yesterday (July 24), new teasers were unveiled at a panel featuring Cumberbatch and Malkovich, including a first look at the hi-tech North Wind HQ.
Cumberbatch also posed for photos with a penguin-suited friend in the event's press line.

Comedy sequel Think Like a Man Too had a solid first place opening on Friday, while Clint Eastwood's Jersey Boys failed to make much noise.Playing at 2,225 locations, Think Like a Man Too took the top spot with an estimated $12.2 million. That's almost identical to the first movie's $12.1 million. Considering it's a sequel opening during the Summer, it's likely to be more front-loaded; still, a weekend north of $30 million is likely. In second place, 22 Jump Street plummeted 63 percent to an estimated $9.4 million. Keeping in mind how big the movie's opening day was, that drop isn't entirely surprising. The comedy sequel has earned $91.9 million through eight days, and should pass $100 million sometime today. How to Train Your Dragon 2 fell 59 percent to an estimated $7.6 million. That's a rough drop for an animated movie: in comparison, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted fell 51 percent, while Monsters University fell 53 percent. For the weekend,...

22 Jump Street got off to a commanding lead in this weekend's battle of the sequels. How to Train Your Dragon 2 could make up ground throughout the weekend, though it will almost certainly fall short of $60 million.22 Jump Street opened to a massive $25 million on Friday. That's the second-biggest R-rated comedy debut ever behind The Hangover Part II ($31.6 million). It's also nearly double the first movie's $13.2 million start. The audience skewed younger (56 percent under 25), which suggests the movie will be very front-loaded this weekend. Still, it should wind up with at least $60 million. In second place, How to Train Your Dragon 2 earned an estimated $18.5 million on Friday. That's significantly higher than the first movie's $12.1 million start. Unfortunately, it's lower than Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted ($20.7 million), which was the last DreamWorks Animation sequel to open in June.It can be tough to predict how animated movies are going to play throughout the weekend,...
