Not a Comedy
csaltun11 February 2009
Osmanli Cumhuriyeti is basically not a comedy but a drama.

There are some funny stuff in the movie but the dramatic side is much heavier. I felt like the author (Gani Mujde) wants to tell an interesting story together with some fun but he fails to combine that Sultan's loneliness with the fun.

Actually the movie would be much better if there is no comedy parts in it or would be a good comedy if the loneliness would not have been told that much.

But still I recommend this movie if you want to watch some drama and if you like Ata Demirer who acts quite good in the movie.

The movie resembles V For Vendetta in concept
ancalimonungol27 August 2009
After I watched Osmanli Cumhuriyeti, V For Vendetta came to my mind. They can be put to same category. I can easily call this movie a Satirical and Political film with an alternative history.

What could have happened if Atatürk died when he was a small child. Today's situation in Turkey is not that far from what is shown in the movie.

Also the funny moments in the movie did not make me laugh, but they made me think All those jokes were full of irony.

The movie also shows why Turks fought for their country without weapons, shoes or food in harsh conditions while many Middle Eastern countries that were colonized by the imperialist countries did not. The movie tries to show the Turkic passion for freedom, but fails to show what Turks could have done in dire situations.

Ataturk was just a catalyst for Turkish identity, enlightenment and their freedom. If he never existed, Turks would have chosen another leader for them. Whatever today's situation is, there will be no way anyone to put Turks in a cage. History always repeats itself.

Good idea but movie is not enough for audiences
zaferpur-17 September 2009
I watched this film las week. I was wondering that film..it said that '' if Ataturk isn't been'' always. someone have to film that idea and have to make good ..of course that person may be Gani Müjde. if I choice that person you can sure I would choice Gani Müjde. because I had seen 'Kahpe Bizans' and I had liked and laughed.. I thought that movie must be like that.. But I couldn't find my expectations in the film. Film is like theater game..there is no crowd at scenes , visually .I thin it used low budge for movie. That idea deserves more budge. there is unnecessary love story in movie too Osman VII between a girl who is resistance. Ata Demirer said that ''they didn't use me'' too. I mean there is a lot of absents in that film..intent is good ,idea is good but movie is not good enough..

Simply worthless
unamoures20 December 2008
To make a long story short, this movies sucks With simplest meaning of the word it is worth nothing. I am a fan of Demirer but he does not change my idea. I did my best to laugh during the movie without any success. You need to force yourself to have some fun from that movie. I am an historian I like the movies somehow have connection with history. But I must tell Gani Müjde and his so-called scenario are totally worthless. And if someone tries to find a scapegoat for the failure of this movie I might choose him. But all in all nobody is worth to be watched in this movie. This is not all because of the actors. After all there are good actors that I like to watching despite the fact that most of them are no worth. But with this scenario which does not present anything to be seen as worth something Even Alpacino could not have changed the fate of this movies which simply sucks... Sorry to make that comment but one needs to tell the truth. Especially someone like me who paid for nothing in return for watching this worthless movie, not counting the time that I had spent for it

Worth watching, considering and trying to understand.
abdulhares17 January 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I see many people regarded this movie as an insult to the mightiness of the Devlet-i alâ Osmanlı (The Great Empire of Ottoman)... No, it isn't. It simply aims to make people ask one of those magical questions, that begin with "What if?". And for those who can't answer by himself, the director gives his answer: It would be a tragedy.

I don't know in what mood did those people watch the movie, or their level of knowledge and capability of understanding the history. Or even whether they watched the movie before making comments here, or did they just read the pilot and raged. But I can't help wondering; how would Ottoman be able to re-gain its freedom, after it completely lost it, after all the troops were dissolved and everything is captured by the Great Forces of the World? How? Many nations around the world would like to hear about your big idea. There are numberless examples for these kind of situations throughout the history.

Gani Müjde doesn't insult the Ottoman Empire. Ottoman was one of the greatest empires of the world, once. But when the golden-haired little boy (at the beginning and the end of the movie) grew old enough to be sent to Samson, as an army officer with a command to dissolve all the troops that were resisting against the invasion, and to collect all the weapons and the ammunitions they had, Ottoman was just a "Dying Man". And the vultures were flying over this dying man desirously, to get their shares as soon as possible. But Mustafa Kemal didn't only disobey the command, but he also did the opposite and united the small troops and people from all ages, all regions of Anatolia together and created a great army from the ashes of Ottoman.

Some may say, if there were no Mustafa Kemal at all, Turkish nation would have created another Ataturk anyhow. (For those who are not familiar with Turkish history; Mustafa Kemal's surname wasn't Ataturk at the time of Independence War of Turks. Turks didn't use surnames until 1934. His surname was given by the Counsil of Republic of Turkey in 1934.) They are right in some points, I must admit. Even in Ataturk's time, there were another heroes who helped him in his "adventure". But ask yourself this question, people: How would today's Anatolia be like, if Mustafa Kemal obeyed the command given to him, and did his job with all his strength? Today we would be haunting his name, for he just did his job. One way, or another. This great commander held the fate of his nation in his hands, and he managed to save his nation. We have to admit, he did a great job, by not doing his actual job.

So, could the movie have been better? Sure. One point that i didn't like about the movie is the accents of the foreign people. When they speak English, it is obvious that they are Turkish actors, who are trying to speak English like a native speaker. And when they speak Turkish, again it is obvious that they are Turkish actors who are trying to speak Turkish like a non-native speaker. I would have acted there, if Gani Müjde asked me to. Although i am not a native speaker of English neither, my accent is far better than those.

And the make up... One can clearly see that most of the people's beard and mustache (like Ibrahim Pasha's) were simply glued onto their faces. Considering that this is not a low-budged movie, it is hard to understand why they didn't give any importance to this.

And finally, those "funny" characters in a coffee-house in Ankara? The ones that seem like they have escaped from a child play. What was it all about? Trying to make explosives from animal feces? Like the explosives made of fertilizer. Get out of here! They didn't make the movie a comedy at all, they made it a bunk. Without that so-called funny scenes, Gani Müjde could have made it a drama, and it would be far better than this.

To sum up; this movie has both good and bad points. It doesn't seem to be #1 in top 250, but it is still worth watching. Maybe people who don't know anything about the Independence War of Turks may find some points difficult to understand. But it is absolutely not fair to claim that it is just a waste of time. At least I don't feel like I've wasted my time.

An unnecessary film
veysel_belek1 December 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Unfortunately some people fairly enjoys decrying Ottoman Empire while doing something with Ataturk's love. It is indisputable that this country became independent by the leadership of Ataturk. But in this film what mainly called my attention is that Emperor of Ottaman was shown as a inebriate, womanizer, characterless person. This is great indignity to our history. In addition, the most comic scenes of the film were in its trailers. So that while watching film you say "is that all!". You must not expect very funny film before watch it. Consequently, I think there was no need for this -not comic- film at all to give a message of "if there weren't Ataturk"

Future of the Ottoman Empire
cagdas-223 December 2008
Great Piece of work that shows everyone what the Ottoman Empire would have been become without Ataturk. This Movie describes a "modern" Ottoman Empire under the control of America and Europe. And it is for sure, that such a parallel (or more even worst) would happen to the Ottomans. Here are some facts now that shows, why this movie, is not just based on fiction.

Facts :

Of course some People didn't recognize the Ottoman Empires situation in the late 19th century. An Empire with high technological level in the high medieval times ended up as a low technological empire in the industrial age (simple example : after nearly 200 years later they received the Gutenberg Machine).

In 1919 the Ottoman Empire has received the orders to disband their Army and they did it.

In the Treaty of Sèvres it was planned to cut the Ottoman Empire into pieces. All important regions were under the control of the victorious opponents. The Ottoman Empire accepted it!

Summary : This movie shows exactly, what this worst case for todays Turkey would have been if Ataturk didn't existed those days.

-1 for the script -2 for the atmosphere in the movie

7/10 nice work

Waste of Time / Zaman Kaybi
yalcinkaya6820 June 2009
As I was just praising Turkish movies how they have been successful recently and more and more quality movies have been produced I got hit by this ''Osmanli Cumhuriyeti'' disaster. Although movie claims itself as a comedy and drama, it is actually not. There is nothing in this movie, NOTHING. It's not a comedy, it is not a drama, it is certainly not a documentary. Director Gani Mujde should do all of us a favor not to direct any more movies. Just quit directing movies like this and go back to writing that he is great at. Instead of being a horrible movie director just be a great humorist. Another embarrassment is seeing Faith Solmaz as a screen writer in this movie. Such a great humorist became a part of this poor movie.

It's a great drama, also reminder for Turkish People
bakgul24 April 2010
I heard many things about this move, positive and negative critics. But As a son of Ataturk and also Faith Sultan Mehmet, one can never say this film is a waste of time.

It clearly shows what would have had been if Atatürk ( miracle of God for Turk people) was someone ordinary not a legend. Turkish people will be economically and politically enslaved, our paradise would rather be the colonial of the Capitalism..

There really are some points that the author(Gani Müjde) could think and write better.. because it brought many responsibility like resembling a unique way of fictitious Turkish History.

I want to thank Gani Müjde for drawing attention to this topic, and Ata Demirer who is the one of the greatest artists of Turk cinema(of course from my standpoint) , and Vildan Atasever's mother for giving birth to those beautiful lady.

A broadly satirical political rom-com of mixed messages and missed opportunities...
cgyford25 October 2010
Turkish TV writer Gani Müjde ("Kahpe Bizans") re-teams with Faith Solmaz and fellow scribe Emre Bülbül for this curious little political satire which quickly loses its way in misjudged rom-com clichés that do much to detract from the admittedly rather mixed message at the heart of the film and indeed the country itself.

The film kicks off with the apparent death in childhood of the country's revered republican founder and national hero Kemel Atatürk before jumping forward to the year 2007 where we find that the sick man of Europe in the hands of a buffoonish Sultan who is a mere puppet in the hands of the devilish Western powers until love gives he the strength to say stand up.

Turkish comedian Ata Demirer plays the modern day Sultan with world-weary relish but fails to generate chemistry with 2005 Golden Orange award winner Vildan Atasever ("2 Girls") whilst eccentric Hulk Hogan look-alike Sümer Tilmaç heads a largely overlooked supporting cast of Ruhsar Öcal, Ali Düsenkalkar and Müjde's wife Belma Canciger on top form.

The seemingly indecisive director has an intriguing "What If…" scenario as a backdrop, which he thoroughly fails to explore as much of the film is given over to a completely unconvincing romance before this too is forgotten in favour of a patriotic fervour which is in turn thrown away for a disappointing dénouement that wipes the few laughs had along the way.

"You can't join EU with this barbaric behaviour!"

A film with no focus
kumiretto31 October 2010
Some reviewers say this is not a comedy but a drama. I would say while Osmanli Cumhuriyeti is a comedy attempt, it ends up as unsuccessful drama.

The plot is very thin and Müjde tries to create drama through portraying how the Sultan has to go through embarrassing situations in daily life as Osmanli Cumhuriyeti is no longer free and sovereign.

But there is simply not enough substance here as a collection of unimportant details fail to bring neither comedy nor drama. For example, taxi drivers do not recognize him and foreign diplomats put him down.

My feeling is that Müjde was probably thinking like a Turk on the street rather than a filmmaker while shooting this movie. First he would need to have chosen between comedy and drama but I fail to see how a comedy could be made as the collapse of Ottoman Empire is a national tragedy. Where can be the humor when the Sultan is treated as a nobody ? Second he should have spent serious time and effort on the drama or comedy body. As I said before, there is no substance here. The drama needs emotions yet nowhere in the film Müjde can captivate our emotions and make us 'watch the film' as our captivated emotions are shepherded thorough the plot.

Both the director and the actors are talented people and it is a waste to see their effort go bust. They could and can do much better ! But Müjde has to focus on filmmaking and has to stop interviewing pop singers and second rate models on TV. So are we surprised that a capable man with no focus makes a film that is out of focus ? No.

As a Turk I see how good-willed and idealistic they are for they also attempt to show what would have happened if there was no Atatürk. But this is simply too much. OC is an attempt to make a comedy out of a big drama while attempting to teach us history in an idealistic way as if in a documentary !

Writing introduction needed in the beginning of the movie
turgutgezgin22 January 2009
We watched this wonderful movie. İt's exceed our expectation.Only the thing is missing, I indicated at the summary. So many non Turkish background ( middle eastern etc. )were present at the movie.I am sure they enjoyed at some points but, they didn't understand main purpose of the movie story. Because we are the Turkısh background,We know our history so,we can understand what's going on in the stream of the movie. You have some introduction of course, beginning of the movie but, those are not enough for non Turkish people.I don't think it's so difficult to add simple writing introduction at the beginning of this wonderful movie for foreign watchers. Many regards.

awful advertisement, high content, poor conclusion
exculuber1 September 2009
Osmanli Cumhuriyeti has many issues which are bounded to actual present. The director and the author of the movie should be applauded for their intelligence that makes us realize why important to have independence in own country. The specific issues and details and the example which directly interest the modern day are qualified. Furthermore, the film squad is above the standards, which are well-known comedy stars. However, the movie is not an certain comedy; the genre of the movie is mostly drama. Therefore the actors and actresses should have been selected for this perspective. Also, the movie is advertised as full-comedy film acted by Ata Demirer. Even Ata Demirer make some sufficient jokes, the whole movie is not for him, or his carrier, or the movie shouldn't be presented as a Ata Demirer comedy show, because it makes audience shock while watching it. Finally, the conclusion of the movie is too simple for that content. I think the final part of the movie addresses only for idiots. The director should be aware of the knowledge of the audience, because the end of the movie is just like teaching children history.

If Turkey's Churchill had never come
m-ozfirat22 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This film asks a hypothetical and controversial question what would present day Turkey of been like without Ataturk. I personally am not a Kemalist and do not agree with some of the changes and reforms he initiated but Ataturk deserves every Turk's salutations irregardless of political perspectives as this film explains because he is our Churchill our great war leader against a ruthless adversary

The film starts in 2008 the year this film is made that shows the Ottoman King like a present day Arab monarch a privileged life with poor subjects no different to most of the Middle East. Turkey's boundaries have been initiated by the treaty of Sevres allocating parts of Anatolia to Greece and Russia along with a Kurdish state. America now exploits the Sultan and crushes an uprising against him by underground leaders who demand a republic showing Turkey at the mercy of imperialism and not a sovereign country.

The few complaints I have about this emotional film is that turkey is simply not portrayed as Arab enough and that it should be called the Ottoman Kingdom not republic - though most Turks considered themselves nationally Ottoman until the introduction of the word "Turkey" in the 1920s. The moral of this film is whether you are a Kemalist or a Traditionalist rightfully thank Ataturk he overthrew the monarchy and founded the Turkish state though I believe the Ottoman heritage should of been assimilated in to the republic as it is part of its natural DNA.
