- Alchemist: I am haunted by a long-standing suspicion that a terrible truth is hidden in the great sea of ignorance that surrounds us and we have never had the courage or the talent to bring it to light. My suspicions have evolved into an unsettling certainty that has become impossible for me to bear. I have decided to uncover those hidden truths whatever the cost. I would rather be squashed by the truth this instant than let my existence serve a lie!

- Palatinus: I have countless books, and countless more in the cellar. Sometimes I put one of them in the window because I like the cover or the smell. This one is definitely very old.
- Severin: I've seen it before, as a little boy. I was very afraid of it.
- Palatinus: Why?
- Severin: I don't know, I was just afraid. I know, it sounds stupid, but... I've totally forgotten about it and now it's just lying there like... out of some obscure dream.
- Palatinus: What about it?
- Severin: No idea. I thought it could drive you mad... I really thought it could kill you.
