This movie was shot in two different styles. All of the interview portions of the movie was fully scripted and written as seen in the movie. However the "game play" portions of the movie was largely improvisation. Each one of these scenes in the script was written as a loose idea as to what was going to happen and, once the camera rolled, the cast had to just react to what was happening and eventually move in the direction that was called for in the script. This led to some very long takes, sometimes upwards of 25 minutes.
With the exception of Michael Coelho and Brad Rego, none of the other cast members had played Dungeons and Dragons with any regularity. Robert Collins ,Jessica Brunelle, and Frank Lewis had never played before, and Matthew Moniz had played as a kid.
The dragon named Kern, as well as the Crystal Sphere and a few other story lines in the game play sections of the movie, are based on elements of a real Dungeons and Dragons game that was run for almost two years by Brad Rego serving as the Dungeon Master.
Each cast member was allowed to choose their own gaming character name, stats and equipment.
During the memory collection scene, Ed says there has only been 221 pieces of a particular memory stick created. This is in reference to the production company "221 Films, Inc." that produced the movie.
