Milo und Mars (oder wie er im Original heißt Mars Needs Moms" basiert auf einem 2007 erschienenen gleichnamigen Bilderbuch von Guy Berkeley Breathed. Vier Jahre später wurde das Ganze unter der Regie von Simon Wells verfilmt. Der ist noch am ehesten bekannt für seine Arbeit an dem Film Der Prinz von Ägypten" und dem mäßig erfolgreichen Remake von The Time Machine". Als wäre das noch nicht genug an schlechten Omen, sei noch erwähnt, dass der Film trotz eines Budgets von sage und schreibe 150 Millionen Dollar bis jetzt gerade einmal 40 wieder einspielen konnte. Aber ist der Film nun wirklich so schlecht wie man befürchten könnte, oder doch einen Blick wert? Eine der wichtigsten Kriterien bei Animationsfilmen ist die Optik. Nicht nur dass hier der Trend immer weiter in Richtung Realismus geht, ist die Optik auch etwas mit dem man gerne mal einen Film bewirbt. Leider ist hier zu vermerken, dass Milo und Mars" eher an eine Zwischensequenz eines Computerspiels erinnert als an einen State-of-the-Art Animationsfilm und damit leider nicht wirklich zeitgemäß ist. Gerade bei einem so stattlichen Budget hätte man besseres erwartet. Zum Glück ist dies aber nur die halbe Miete.
Auf der anderen Seite ist der Film voll gestopft mit kleinen, liebevoll platzierten Details. Die Welt der Marsianer wirkt sehr plastisch und sorgt trotz der bereits erwähnten Animationstechnik schon einmal für den einen oder anderen Moment, in dem man sich genötigt fühlt, kurz den Atem anzuhalten. Wenn die schier endlosen uniformierten Truppen unter dem Kommando des Supervisors zu sehen sind, erinnert das ein wenig an die ersten Star Wars Filme. Der Soundtrack passt zum Thema und sorgt dafür, dass die Action noch ein Stück mitreißender ist.
Weitere positive Aspekte des Filmes sind die durchaus gelungene Situationskomik, die Dialoge und verrückt lustigen Charaktere dieses Spektakels (auch wenn es sich im Wesentlichen auf drei Hauptpersonen beschränkt). Während ersteres nie aufgesetzt wirkt, resultiert letzteres daraus, dass Milo der einzig normale Mensch" auf dem Mars zu sein scheint. Der wird übrigens gesprochen von dem immerhin 37-jährigen Seth Green, von dem man im Zusammenhang mit diesem Film zurecht behaupten kann, er habe die Mentalität eines Kindes. Green spielt seine Rolle erstklassig und trotz seines fortgeschrittenen Alters sehr glaubwürdig. Die Art wie er als Milo mit Händen und Füßen um seine Mutter kämpft wird zwar nie den Oscar gewinnen, ist dennoch erstklassig.
Dan Fogler als Gribble hatte die wahrscheinlich lustigste Rolle des Filmes. Gribble hilft nicht nur Milo seine Mutter zu retten, sondern ist bedingt durch den langen und vor allem einsamen Aufenthalt auf dem Mars, zu einer schrägen und leicht verrückt anmutenden Persönlichkeit geworden. Mit seinen technischen Spielereien rettet er gerne einmal die Situation (die er zum Teil auch selbst verschuldet hat), wobei seine größte technische Errungenschaft der spinnen artige Roboter und Sidekick mit dem Namen Twocat ist. Unterstützt wird dieses ungleiche Paar von der Marsianerin Ki (Elisabeth Harnois), die dank des Erdenfernsehens die Flower-Power für sich entdeckt hat.
Abschließend seit gesagt, dass Milo und Mars" trotz kleinerer Defizite ein unterhaltsamer Film ist, bei dem man guten Gewissens den einen oder anderen Blick riskieren kann.
