Daily Dead recently spoke with actress Lin Shaye about what to expect from Insidious: Chapter 4, and now fans can see the return of demonologist Elise Rainier in the first photo from the anticipated sequel.
Featured on EW and unveiled by Universal Pictures, the first photo from Insidious: Chapter 4 features Rainier and Tessa Ferrer's (Extant, Excision) character Aubrey, and by the looks on their faces (with a lantern held high), they're in the midst of a powerful (and likely frightening) presence.
In our recent exclusive interview with Shaye, she said that the timeline of Insidious: Chapter 4 will begin shortly after the conclusion of Chapter 3:
"In general, it goes back to Elise’s beginnings. And you also meet Elise at a very different point in her life. It takes place right after the end of Chapter 3, when she walks off with Specs and Tucker and they’re starting their company,...

Richard Bates Jr. found quite a bit of acclaim with his short film Excision in 2008, going so far as to garner special mention from the horror jury at Austin Fantastic Fest. Four years later, Bates Jr. is making his feature film writing and directing debut by expanding the story of Excision. AnnaLynne McCord takes over the lead role from Tessa Ferrer, with Ariel Winter, Traci Lords, and Roger Bart filling out the main cast, and cameos from Matthew Gray Gubler, Marlee Matlin, Matthew Fahey, Malcolm McDowell, Jeremy Sumpter, Ray Wise, and John Waters. Two new clips highlighting the roles of the latter two have now been released, and can be seen below. For those further interested in the film, Sos contributor Michael Ryan and Sos editor Ricky were able to see the movie at Fantasia 2012; Michael Ryan’s review can be read here, and Ricky’s review can be read here.

Hey, fans of the CW’s “90210″, you might want to look away, because AnnaLynne McCord’s character in director Richard Bates Jr.’s new horror film “Excision” is a tad … disturbing. In fact, she kinda scares me, to be perfectly honest with you. I suspect anyone expecting the AnnaLynne McCord of “90210″ is going to get a rude awakening. Take a look at McCord, as the film’s troubled young female lead, in a not-all-that-helpful counseling session from an Exclusive Clip below. Her opponent? Cult film director John Waters, who knows a thing or two about freaking people out. Based on writer/director Richard Bates, Jr.’s short film of the same name, Excision follows a disturbed and delusional high school student, Pauline (AnnaLynne McCord). Pauline, with aspirations of a career in medicine, goes to extremes to earn the approval of her controlling mother (played by Traci Lords). While dealing with...

In 2008, Richard Bates Jr. made a short film about a teenager’s harrowing journey into madness via extreme medical procedures. The short was well-received in the film circuit, propelling Bates Jr. to adapt the story of the teen and her overbearing mother into a feature length film, titled Excision. 90210‘s AnnaLynne McCord takes on the lead role this time, with Modern Family‘s Ariel Winter playing her sister, and Traci Lords, Malcolm McDowell, Ray Wise, John Waters, Matthew Fahey, Matthew Gray Gubler, and Marlee Matlin rounding out the cast. The first clip from the movie has now been released, and can be seen below. For those further interested in the film, Sos contributor Michael Ryan’s review can be read here, and Sos editor Ricky’s thoughts on the film can be read here.

Just a heads up, you might want to avoid eating while watching this new clip from Richard Bates Jr.’s horror flick “Excision”. AnnaLynne McCord (“90210”) dabbles in what is best described as a home bird autopsy. You know who does that? Creepy little weird kids and future serial killers, that’s who. Just look at the books sitting on the desk next to the bird corpse, “Southern Folklore” and “Human Sexuality”. Normally that would up the crazy ante a bit, but the barehanded surgery, plus the licking up of the blood from said barehanded surgery, already does a pretty good job of that. Based on a short film of the same name, “Excision” follows a disturbed and delusional high school student, Pauline (McCord), with aspirations of a career in medicine, goes to extremes to earn the approval of her controlling mother (Traci Lords). While dealing with being an outcast teenager...

Watch a new clip called Bird Surgery from Richard Bates Jr.'s Excision thriller starring AnnaLynne McCord, Traci Lords, Ariel Winter, Roger Bart and John Waters. The Anchor Bay Films release finds DVD release on October 16th after showing earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival. In Excision, Pauline wishes that reconnecting with her mother was as easy as picking scabs. Or that fixing her sisters lung disorder was as simple as dissecting road kill. Maybe the other girls at school would be nicer to her if they knew she fantasized about performing surgery on them...

Monster Pictures has announced that it will be releasing Richard Bates Jr., directorial debut, Excision, on limited release in UK cinemas on 2 November. I came across the film at PiFan earlier this summer, and it's a delightfully deranged coming-of-age thriller about delusional high-schooler Pauline (AnnaLynne McCord), who obsesses over death, anatomy and performing vivisections on roadkill. Her parents fail to understand her, as do her teachers and classmates. Only little sister Grace (Ariel Winter) - who suffers from cystic fibrosis - seems to get Pauline, so she sets out to do what any responsible big sister should do, and cure Grace of her illness herself! The film boasts a great lead performance from McCord and a strong supporting cast that includes Malcolm McDowell, Traci Lords...

Anchor Bay have announced that they intend to drop the gruesome Richard Bates Jr. horror flick 'Excision' onto both DVD and Blu-ray across the Us from 16 October. AnnaLynne McCord ('90210', 'The Haunting of Molly Hartley') and ex-porn star Traci Lords (' Zack and Miri Make a Porno') star in the 'mind-blowingly grotesque' feature and now not only do we catch a glimpse of the expected new artwork for the release next month but also a handful of brand new stills. Sadly, however, it doesn't appear there's going to be a great deal of extras on the said DVD or Blu-ray as only an audio commentary with writer/director Richard Bates Jr. and star AnnaLynne McCord has been mentioned. 'Excision' also stars Ariel Winter, Roger Bart, Jeremy Sumpter, John Waters, Malcolm McDowell ('A Clockwork Orange'), Marlee Matlin, Matthew Gray Gubler and...

Ricky D, Michael Ryan and Edgar Chaput are quite familiar with the Fantasia Film Festival, having attended the event for years (some of us since the very beginning); so we thought it would be wise to list our favorite films from the 2012 line up. Enjoy!
Edgar Chaput’s Top 3
3-Game of Werewolves (2012, Juan Martinez Moreno)
A review for this film has already has already been published (link here), but the short version is that director Martinez Moreno and his stellar cast deliver one of the most engaging, hysterical, action packed and wonderfully shot werewolf movies in years. Not this Wolf has a film involving these nightmarish hunters been so entertaining. Its greatest flaw is the script, which makes some bizarre decisions as to character motivations, yet any qualms about why certain people are doing what are squashed by the joy out of seeing Moreno’s interpretation of the universe of lycanthropy…...

Excision

USA 2012 Fantasia imdb
There were two films at Fantasia this year that took me on trips that I didn’t want to go on. The first was the winner of Fantasia’s Satoshi Kon Award for Achievement in Animation The King of Pigs. The second was Excision. Both films are about outsiders in high school, bullying and school as hell. The difference is that The King of Pigs announces almost from its opening frames that this will not be a pleasant journey, while Excision promises a disturbing dream of a journey, only truly turning nightmarish in the final twenty minutes.
To put it another way, I quite enjoyed the trip that Excision was taking me on, until I reached its destination and I hated that arrival so much that it made me hate the journey – made me reevaluate and hate the entire film.

I'm extremely torn about reviewing Excision, and here's why: When I first watched the trailer — the version with Nin's "Closer" as the main music — it was comparable to having an intense orgasm after a really perverse fantasy. Deep down, you know this kind of perverse satisfaction can only be fully experienced once and you can only expect the real thing to be nothing short of mind-blowing. Add to this the fact that everyone I know who saw the film raved about it when I would share my giddy excitement, which only reinforced my desire to see it.
Perhaps this is why, when I finally saw Excision, after weeks of eagerly counting the days until the screening, I felt…disappointed. My expectations had set the bar too high,...

Excision
Directed by Richard Bates Jr.
Screenplay by Richard Bates Jr.
2012, USA
Writer-director Richard Bates. Jr. draws on years of movie-watching for his audacious feature debut Excision. The most obvious influences for Excision is possibly Brian DePalma’s Carrie, Todd Solondz’s Welcome To The Dollhouse and Michael Lehmann’s Heathers. Toss in equal parts Gregg Araki, Dario Argento, Alejandro Jodorowsky, and John Hughes and an ending reminiscent of Cronenberg’s Dead Ringers - and Excision might just be the best “adolescent misfit” movie in a very long time.
Richard Bates Jr.’s dark domestic offbeat black comedy (a passion project converted from his 2008 short with the same name), is greased up with enough cultural references, sarcasm, graphic sex and bloody violence to turn John Waters into a preacher man. Yet despite the controversy stirred up earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, it is important to note that...

Special Event: Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut
(UK/USA) – Dir. Clive Barker / Restoration Director. Russell Cherrington
The turbulent production of Clive Barker’s Nightbreed is the stuff of legend, and the film released in 1990 was a far cry from Barker’s original novella, with many significant scenes excised by the film’s producers. Presumed lost for over twenty years, the footage surfaced in the form of two separate workprints and has been integrated with scenes from the original theatrical version to create The Cabal Cut – a fully fleshed-out monster epic that captures Clive Barker’s original vision in vivid detail.

An adolescent’s sixteenth birthday marks a turning point in life when maturation occurs at a much more rapid pace and the teenager begins to be faced with difficult and important decisions that will shape their future. The same can be said of Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival, set to kick off its sixteenth edition tomorrow: its Super Sweet Sixteen promises to be nothing if not interesting. That’s not to say that the main focus of North America’s largest genre film festival is changing; in fact, between prolific director Takashi Miike’s festival opener For Love’s Sake – fresh from Cannes and having its North American premiere – and the Canadian premiere of animation studio Laika’s Paranorman, which closes the fest three weeks later, filmgoers will have a whopping 160 films from around the world to choose from. Sitges eat your heart out.

For even the most seasoned festival goer, the Fantasia Film Festival presents a daunting challenge. With over 160 films playing, it is impossible to see everything and compromise is not an option but a necessity. For the cinematic adventurer, however, Fantasia is a gold-mine: bringing to the forefront some of the strangest, smallest and craziest of genre cinema to the big screen. The success rate is not always high, but the joy of discovering an unexpected gem outweighs any disappointment that may be encountered on your adventures through the trenches of obscurity.
That being said, my most anticipated films of the festival combine the more highly anticipated works with some stranger more unpredictable entries. Be sure to check out the Fantasia website for a full list of films and leave a comment with your own list of anticipated features!

Strange Beauty Film Festival
2013 will be starting off with a bang when the 4th annual Strange Beauty Film Festival rocks the Manbites Dog Theater in Durham, North Carolina on January 24-26.
Strange Beauty is a short films only festival that has two requirements. One: Films have to be 30 minutes long or less. Two: Films must be “strangely beautiful.” But, what does that mean exactly? In the fest’s words, they show:
Short fiction, documentary, experimental, animation, underground, funky, and otherwise wholly unclassifiable works that lie somewhere between terrifying normality and sublime fever dreams. We’re looking for movies that strike a nerve, shake us up, come back to haunt us.
Last year’s Strange Beauty is the first one we listed on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film and we were thrilled to include it in our roster of fests we cover, especially with its powerhouse lineup of filmmakers.

I can't remember a time I went to the Seattle International Film Festival (Siff) press launch and looked over the list of films and saw so many I was interested in seeing. The claim to fame for over the years is to call it the largest and most-highly attended festival in the United States. This is a fact I've often taken issue with as I don't equate quantity with quality. Granted, there has been a large number of quality features to play the fest over the years, including Golden Space Needle (Best Film) winners such as Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985), My Life as a Dog (1987), Trainspotting (1996), Run Lola Run (1999), Whale Rider (2003) and even recent Best Director winner, Michel Hazanavicius's Oss 117: Nest of Spies in 2006. That said, looking over this year's crop of films I see a lot of films I will be doing my absolute best to see.

The 14th annual Boston Underground Film Festival wrapped up on April 1 with their Bacchus Awards ceremony, named after the fest’s bunny mascot.
The big winners were: Winnipeg filmmaker Steven Kostanski took home the Best of Fest Feature award for Manborg, his over-the-top action and low-fi special effects homage to ’80s direct-to-video movies; while U.S. filmmaker Robert Putka won Best of Fest Short for his provocative tale of young romance, Mouthful, which was positively reviewed on Bad Lit just a few weeks ago.

The 14th annual Boston Underground Film Festival is ready to kick ass and take names on March 29 to April 1 at the Brattle Theatre. And a few of those names will look familiar to Buff fanatics — and underground film fans the world over.
A trio of Buff favorites are returning to the fest with debut feature films after totally killing it with their amazing short films in the past. Jamie Heinrich‘s Happily Never After is a feature-length expansion of the short film that took home the Best of Fest Award in 2010, but with more solid and mature themes as the movie explores the problematic life of a degenerate photographer.
Another former award winner is Richard Bates Jr. who will be screening Excision, another feature-length extension of a short film, this one about a teenage girl who exercises her morbid obsession with surgery every chance she gets.

With a great Sundance behind us (full wrap-up here), there are still a few titles waiting on acquisition. Three of those got deals today; the biggest being Leslye Headland‘s Bachelorette. Deadline reports that The Weinstein Company picked up the dark comedy for around $2 million dollars with plans for simultaneous VOD and theatrical roll-out. They even went ahead and formed a new company for these similar deals in the future, titled Radius. Starring Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, Lizzy Caplan, James Marsden, Adam Scott and Kyle Bornheimer, one can read our positive review here and interview with the director here.
Next up is two films that I saw at the festival, but didn’t get a chance to write about until now. Deadline also reports that Christopher Neil‘s dramedy Goats was picked up by Image Entertainment. I was mixed on the film starring David Duchovny, Vera Farmiga, Ty Burrell and Graham Phillips.

Sundance 2012 buying continued apace today, with four films announcing that they'd found North American homes. Radius-twc, the Weinstein Company's new VOD-plus label, bought "Bachelorette," which screened in competition. Written and directed by Leslye Headland, which she adapted from her own stage play,"Bachelorette" stars Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, Lizzy Caplan and Rebel Wilson as four frenemies who must come to terms with the first marriage within their quartet -- and the lucky girl is, according to the other three, the least deserving. The deal was negotiated for Radius-twc by Tom Quinn and Jason Janego and by CAA on behalf of the filmmakers. Anchor Bay bought "Excision," which premiered as part of Park City at Midnight. It's the first feature by writer-director Richard Bates Jr. and stars AnnaLynne McCord, Traci Lords, Roger Bart and John Waters. The filmmakers were repped by Preferred Content, Cassian Elwes and...

Before Sundance rolled around last month, we reported on director Richard Bates Jr.’s Excision as one of the titles to watch, and it turns out we weren’t the only ones. Anchor Bay has acquired North American rights to the fright flick, adding it to their robust 2012 calendar.
Excision stars AnnaLynne McCord, Traci Lords , Ariel Winter, Roger Bart, Jeremy Sumpter, Malcolm McDowell, Matthew Gray Gubler, Marlee Matlin, Ray Wise, and John Waters. No wide release info has been provided yet.
Synopsis (courtesy Anchor Bay):
“Pauline isn’t your typical teen. She picks scabs, dissects road kill, and fantasizes about performing surgery on strangers. Her fascinations disturb her parents and her classmates. Pauline reserves special disdain for “the church” and her “therapist,” Reverend William, who, in Pauline’s mind, is in no position to judge, or indulge in, her psychosexual fantasies. No one understands Pauline except for Grace, her younger sister,...

Every year I've come to Sundance I've seen a film that just shocked the hell out of me. As we are nearing the end of the festival, I wasn't sure if I was going to see that kind of film this year, but I did, and it was insane. Excision was a extremely disturbing and twisted movie that I can't get out of my freakin' head. There are visuals and images that are now forever burned into my memory, and that's not a good thing.
I'm not saying the film was bad because it wasn't. It was actually very well made. It just had a extremely dark and demented story. Would it make sense if I told you that I enjoyed watching the film, but didn't think it was fun? This was a hard movie to watch, because of how incredibly twisted and evil it was, but that's also one...

Sundance’s Midnight section always includes a fair share of genre-heavy selections, but Richard Bates Jr.’s Excision packs a level of blood and guts rarely seen at the festival. A twisted coming of age tale, Excision follows young Pauline (AnnaLynne McCord), a high school girl with an unabated interest in picking scabs, dissecting road kill, and fantasizing about performing surgery on strangers. Bates has crafted a truly bold debut, eighty-minutes of gleefully grotesque horror comedy, sure to play well to splatter-enthusiasts in Park City and beyond.
Filmmaker: You’re premiering at a festival not traditionally known for its horror selections. How do you hope the film plays to audiences in Park City?
Bates: I sure hope people like it. I wanted to make a film that would have had a profound impact on me had I seen it as a teenager. In a lot of ways it’s a...

Nicholas McCarthy’s The Pact and Richard Bates Jr.’s Excision are two of the seven feature films selected to screen at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival as part of the “Park City at Midnight” cult movie section. These films will be screening out of competition at the fest.
What makes these two horror-themed films stand out from the others is that they are feature-length versions of two acclaimed short films, both of which have been reviewed on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film.
You can read Bad Lit’s review of the short version of The Pact here. Although Bates had at one time uploaded his original version of Excision to Vimeo, he has since set the short film to “private.” In fact, it appears Bates has removed all of his own references to the short film online.

All good parents want to encourage their kids’ hopes, dreams and aspirations. However, when your daughter is obsessed with performing surgeries without a medical license, that might be a dream you want to quash. In Richard Bates Jr.‘s spectacularly unsettling short horror movie Excision, Pauline (Tessa Ferrer) is your typical rebellious, moody teenager, but instead of getting high or having sex, she prefers wielding a scalpel and a retractor. And, if you don’t happen to be a doctor and don’t know what a retractor does, well, watch the film to find out…
There are lots of elements that make Excision so effectively creepy and disturbing, from the grotesque premise to Bates’ tight script to the outlandish fantasy sequences contrasted with the mundanity of suburbia. However, the true heart and soul of the film — or should that be heart and guts — is the fully committed and twisted performance...

The 7th annual Calgary Underground Film Festival is ready to start off with a bang this year on April 12 and then continue through to April 18. Opening night will see the results of the festival’s wildly popular 48-hour Movie Making Challenge, where registered teams were given a genre, a prop and a line of dialogue; then sent out to craft perfect cinematic masterpieces in just two short days.
Then, the rest of the fest is dedicated to some of the wildest films made in both the fest’s home country of Canada and from around the world, including Indonesia, Serbia, the UK and the U.S.
If you’re attending the festival, there’s one incredibly fun documentary you need to see: Michael Petersen’s Eddies: The Documentary, about the craziest beer commercial-making competition in the world — that happens to take place right in Calgary every year! Petersen profiled several...

Would you take a life to save the life of someone you love? This is the central moral dilemma that Pauline (Tessa Ferrer) faces, as her sister Grace (Carly Hobson) slowly succumbs to cystic fibrosis. A horror short that clocks in at eighteen minutes, it is no surprise why Excision has won at least twenty-four awards.
An excellent performance from Tessa Ferrer and the other minor characters, the story, execution, and denouement (conclusion) of Excision are near flawless. Currently in the film festival circuit Excision must be seen by horror fans! Check out the website of the film for film festival screenings, often!
Acting/believability/characterizations: 7.5.
Story/writing/plot: 8.
Conclusion/editing/continuity: 8.
Overall: 7.75 Bulging Eyes out of 10 (wow).

Raise your hand if you’ve ever been to a film festival. Remember when the movie started up and it didn’t seem at all like the one you thought you came to see, until you suddenly realized what you were watching was actually one of those annoying short films? If this is you, stop reading now. The short film is an integral part of the festival experience, especially the downright twisted ones shown at Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX.
Technically, a short film plays before each feature here, but Short Fuse combines the best of the rest of these little pieces of celluloid into two hours of head-spinning mayhem. Now, it’s not that these films weren’t worthy of being played in front of a feature; rather, they’re so damn good the programmers felt that it wasn’t worth upstaging someone else’s hard work, and Short Fuse was born.
