A child narrates the verses as the story unfolds, rather unveils itself. A woman full of darkness yearns for love and light and goes out in search of it. But she is bound to her fate and she cannot have those, hurting those she comes in contact with. Those she hurts lash out at her. Jason Bognacki’s short film In the Dark, Dark Woods is a studied and tremendously well executed exercise in visual storytelling. Having only the narration to aurally guide us we have only the images to bolster his haunted tale. And bolster they do. Words like Dark, Beautiful and Haunting only begin to scratch at the surface of it. In the Dark, Dark Woods looks and feels like classic horror...

Writer/director Jason Bognacki has been impressing us with his work for a number of years, most recently with the neo-giallo Another (trailer). For a follow-up, Bognacki has turned his sights to a short film project which will be making its world debut at Fantasia.

We’re living in a golden age of genre films, and there may be no better proof than the Fantasia International Film Festival, the three-week-long celebration of international genre efforts currently in the midst of its 21st year. The lineup is comprised of more than 150 features from all over the world, but that figure is dwarfed by the 300 short films showing across multiple sections. Too often, shorts are marginalized at film festivals, lumped into categories that designate them as calling cards for features and nothing more. Not so at Fantasia, where a number of the shorts showcase the precise visions of filmmakers looking to shock, frighten and unsettle audiences with concise approaches that hardly demand the padding of a feature-length running time.
Fantasia’s programming stands out from other genre festivals in that it doesn’t exclusively focus on outrageous horror movies, B-grade science fiction, or other stereotypes associated with the term “genre.

Following this week’s release-date announcement, a new teaser for David Lynch‘s revival of Twin Peaks has arrived. Featuring the first look at Kyle MacLachlan returning as FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper, it’s another enigmatic preview as he emerges from the dark. As long as Showtime don’t reveal much in the way of plot, as promised, we’ll be satisfied with one of these brief teasers for each main character — and nothing else until the premiere.
“Well, in the beginning, many years ago, Mark [Frost] and I were as if lost in the wilderness, as it always is in the beginning,” Lynch said regarding the revival. “Then we seemed to find a mountain and began to climb, and when we rounded the mountain, we entered a deep forest, and going through the forest for a time the trees began to thin, and then coming out of the forest...

Tagline: "You can demolish a building, but never remove the past." A second trailer has been released for the Norwegian, horror title Villmark 2. Aka Dark Woods, the second trailer is longer than the first. As well, this time, dialogue is spoken by the characters, revealing more of the film's story. Villmark 2 will release in Norway this October. However, a release in North America remains elusive. Fans of indie horror can find the exciting trailer below. The film takes place in a sanatorium. Here, five contractors are tasked with preparing the building for demolition. However, this ancient tenement has a resident, who will not leave and even kill to stay! The trailer is a good one. It shows the film's central, ominous setting. Also, each of the central characters are introduced, with the clip finishing with a blood-soaked spectacle. This viewer enjoyed the short clip of the owl, which adds something...

Over the years there has been a boom in Norwegian horror with films like Dark Woods, Manhunt, Cold Prey and it’s sequels and, of course, Tommy Wirkola’s Nazi zombie epic, Dead Snow. And now comes the sequel, Dead Snow 2: Red or Dead, which picks up directly where the last film ended. For those that don’t remember, the original film saw a group of horny teens head out to a cabin miles from nowhere, high up in the snowy Norwegian mountains, with no cell phone reception and no car. We’re all very familiar with the character Wolverine (played so brilliantly in the X-Men movies by Hugh Jackman) but we’ve never really seen what happened to him when he was younger. Two Swedish film makers have decided it’s about time we saw a little from his past and have created a 5 minute short film they’ve called ‘Logan’.
Title: LoganDirectors: Andreas Climent and André Hedetoft.Cast: Kola Krauze (“Wallander”, “Solsidan”), Tobias Nilsson and Deepak Tara.Visual effects by Martin Kupski (“Hellboy 2″, “Ninja Assassin”).Music composed by S. A lone man locked inside a dark room is violently interrogated about his identity. When his captors finally find out who he is, they realize that he isn’t locked in with them, they are the ones locked in with him…
Please note, this short film contains violence and is Nsfw.

Swedish directors Andreas Climent and André Hedetoft were apparently sitting around the house one day and wondered: “Hey, what would happen if some dude caught Wolverine back when he was still a young teen name Logan and beat the crap out of him?” Well, as it turns out, bad things happen. To, er, the dude. Check out a new fanmade short film that wonders how a young Logan would deal with a brutal interrogation from Climent and Hedetoft, simply titled “Logan”. Like most fanmade short films, the payoff is at the end. Starring Kola Krauze (“Wallander”, “Solsidan”), Tobias Nilsson and Deepak Tara. Visual effects by Martin Kupski (“Hellboy 2″, “Ninja Assassin”). Music composed by S. Peace Nistades (“Dark Woods”, “Dragon Age: Redemption”). Check out the “Logan” Official Site. Another Memorial Day weekend come and gone, and here we are: summer has begun. Temperatures are rising all over the place, and you might have trouble finding comfort, let alone sleep, with all the humidity. You could make like the olden days and take to the air-conditioned cinema houses to beat the heat. With fairy tales, horror flicks, historical epics and more, there’s plenty of material to keep you in that ice-cold seat, eyes glued to the screen. Take note, however: the gore/scare factor is high this week; these movies probably won’t help you sleep at night.
The second Snow White flick of the year hits theaters this weekend, offering a much darker, gothic take on the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tale than its predecessor. Rupert Sanders helms “Snow White and the Huntsman,” in which the titular Snow White (Kristen Stewart) and Hunky Hunter (Chris Hemsworth) join forces...

Writer John Muscarnero (Dark Woods) has released a concept poster, teaser trailer and photos to excite audiences for his latest passion project, The Harper’s Field Footage. This intense and gritty realistic horror film looks at the last days of a film crew out to document the hunt for a man-eating bear said to be prowling about in the foothills of Northern Los Angeles. To be specific, in the Sierra Nevada Mountains at an area that is simply known as Harper's Field.
The concept poster contrasts the blood red photo with monochromatic black as Chloe Moore tries to remain alive under the crushing darkness. But can she survive the night? Bears and bloodletting horror collide in a tale that will leave everyone traumatized. The film releases in 2014!
This trailer is designed to excite and the photo is created to tantalize viewers of what may be Chloe’s (Chloe Moore) last day in the woods.

Dark Woods Movie PosterDark Woods has secured a DVD release with Vanguard Cinema and September 28th is the release date. The film has been positively reviewed (here) and the film is a moody thriller involving a sexually developing and precocious female adolescent. The film also covers terminal cancer and one couple's desperate attempt to take on the challenge of this diminishing disease. Actress Coogan accurately describes the film as "“a psychological thriller than a horror film in the classical sense.” Special features have not been announced, but the trailer for the film can be revisited below.
The synopsis for Dark Woods here...

Every project has its own unique flavor, its own unique experiences, but one thing every project has in common, is deadline and delivery. As I’ve been working on project after project, I’ve put a lot of thought into getting to that final phase as smoothly as possible for both myself and the client by looking at the entire process leading up to deadline and delivery. Something that has remained true about the process on most of the projects I’ve worked on is, it’s never done ‘til it’s done.
On many, in fact most, of the projects I work on, there will be some sort of final, last tweaks that happen just before it goes off to the dub stage, while the film is being mixed, or even right before the final mix gets printed and delivered to theaters. We hear stories of this all the time.

Born of Earth will be looking for distribution at the European Film Market, with Multivisionnaire Pictures showing the film. The market begins this Friday, the 12th, with a whole slate of horror pictures making their way to the continent. Born of Earth stars Daniel Baldwin (A Darker Reality), Brad Dourif (Halloween II) and James Russo (Dark Woods). Coincidentally, Russo plays a similar role, as sheriff, in both Dark Woods and Born of Earth. Here, however this picture is much more action oriented and classified in the creature feature, horror sub-genre. Very little info' has surfaced on this feature, since its completion in 2008. The Efm might help Born of Earth find North American or worldwide distribution.
A synopsis for Born of Earth:
"One night, Danny's wife is killed as creatures from hell come to snatch his children. 5-years later Danny remains haunted and criminalized by a community that never believed his story.

The Dark Woods is more of a sexual thriller than a horror movie, but I thought some of our readers might find the trailer interesting. I know I did! It stars James Russo and Tracy Coogan, and it was directed by Bit Parts director Michael Escobedo. A young couple moves to a secluded cabin in the woods to cope with a terminal illness. After rescuing a young girl from the abusive hands of her psychotic uncle he is coerced by local law enforcement to allow the young girl to stay with them. As the illness consumes his wife and Henry struggles with his own human connections, the young girl attempts to claim her place in their home. Henry must rediscover his humanity and choose between his increasingly erratic and sexually explorative new housemate and his horrifically deteriorating wife.

Director: Michael Escobedo.
Writer: John Muscanero.
A film about death, loss, and loneliness "Dark Woods," from writer John Muscanero and director Michael Escobedo, is a slowly paced psychological drama that deals with many other themes including death and cancer. Tracy Coogan plays the woman dying and she, as Susan Branch, chooses to live out her remaining days in the isolation of a backwoods community. Husband Henry Branch hopes for her recovery, but the introduction of serial rapist Rand Larch and a victim add more stress to an already depressing story. Sounds fun right?
In fact, "Dark Woods" is an enjoyable watch as the intensity builds slowly over time with mystery and the possibility of infidelity hovering over the scenes. The dark writing of the film allows actress Tracy Coogan to fully develop her character as she slips in and out of consciousness. Her acting as a woman succumbing to cancer seems researched and well rehearsed.

Dark Woods is the story of a loving husband Henry (John Muscarnero-who also wrote the film) and his dying wife Susan (played to an eerie perfection by Tracy Coogan) who travel far away from the city life into the secluded woods so she can die in peace. Sound depressing enough yet? As Susan drifts in and out of consciousness, Henry, out for a jog stumbles across a [...]...
