Not another Holiday movie
kosmasp13 November 2020
No just because Elyas M'Barek is in this, it does not mean it is a comedy. Or a movie that can be compared to fast food. He tries his acting chops in a drama and does a decent job with it. Not just him though, all the actors involved. Now this may not be your cup of tea (fair enough), but try not to just judge it from what you expected this to be (your vacations video apparently as another reviewer had in mind), but for what it is actually trying to convey.

This is a drama and a heavy one. Slow burn and all that included. The movie is very well made, which does not mean you will have to like it. Our tastes differ, so I totally get that. But the quality of what the movie is actually about (human crisis, look into what drives the characters, but also many subtle hints at flaws within them), is shown on the screen. Sex and nudity in general is not something Germans or the rating board seem to have an issue with, so check your rating board and decide if what this portrays (and not to entice or excite but show depths of the characters and their struggle) offends you

Beautiful movie
nixy-caos16 March 2021
Telling a story can serve several purposes: propaganda, entertainment and make us think about existential issues. Most people are just looking for entertainment, which is not a problem in itself. But you can't expect every movie to have an impactful scene in the first 15 minutes, a fast pace or a big turnaround near the end, to get the viewer's attention. "What We Wanted" is a good example of a good movie that people miss because they just don't want to see "slow movies". This is a beautiful drama film, very well directed, beautiful in its delicacy, in its sensitivity, in its rawness, in its reality, in its sadness, with excellent performances, with special emphasis on the performance of Lavinia Wilson and the little Iva Höpperger.

Well acted but nothing much happens
bazookamouth-221-89809716 November 2020
A childless Austrian couple (a plain Jane and a middle east looking fella) take a vacation and a placed in a holiday home near a in your face noisy family unit. So you think it might take a sinister turn with the irritating neighbours but mostly its a movie about the Austrian couple who want most to have a child but cannot and the strain on the relationship.

Wonderfully taken
psenku-72-54904326 April 2021
Loved the way the movie was directed with emotions well delivered...the place and the nature captures were really good...but the ending could have been much better by showing what exactly the couple learnt from their vacation or what was that they gained then..but good portrayal of the characters..

Let's just say my holiday video was better than this movie
salma_b-9417711 November 2020
Sooo boring and slow, such a time waster. Forwarded the majority of it. Absolute snooze fest. My 2020 lockdown depression is more exciting than this.

Oh and definitely not a family movie! Many pointless sex scenes.

Nice acting but pointless

Warning: Spoilers
I really do not get the point of the movie. I thought the end would be either her getting pregnant, or her still having hope to get one, but they just ended it in a weird way (not even an open end). I do not get why they involved the suicide attempt of the kid in the story...

How to waste time..
Miss_Xray14 November 2020
30 minutes in and so far nothing unexpected has happend. "an unexpecting turn" it is called but in swedish. What kind of crap is this... ? Like another review... I agree... My isolation and whatever holliday is more exciting than this.. Sadly. I know I don´t want kids.. but this made me want them even less.. And not sure that is the point. Netflix is getting better and better at collecting pointless films. they need to lower the fee....

Slow, sad, but beautiful
praescaio-983356 December 2020
I enjoyed the movie, but it will not be a crowd pleaser. The movie is very slow, and does not have a clear direction when it moves.

The story is about a couple that is unsuccessfully trying to conceive and decides to take a break a go on vacation. What happens onwards is very human and relatable. It is not a feel good movie, but I felt enriched after watching it.

The scenes are beautiful and aptly convey feelings. The takes have a beautiful photography, and the movie overall is Oscar material.

A completely waste of time
nanakitsch29 November 2020
There are some comments saying there's a lesson we can learn from this movie. I would like to know what are they talking about. 150 minutes of nothing, not even good or at least decent dialogues.

Nope
ingamazonaite10 January 2022
Movie has no point and lazy plot.

Nothing happening. It's slow and boring.

There is nothing more to tell about it.

One star is for music at the end, at least something enjoyable.

Not recommend.

Wonderful Movie 10!
lorena_nunes16 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It's a really deep movie with lot of meaning. The attemp of suicide it's the moment when all of them wake up for life and for what is happening inside themselves, instead of the neighbors' door. The roof is what keep your estructure safe and away from the rain. In the end the couple saw each other and their needs and decide to see the horizon, the future together. They have a lot of problems, but in the beginning they were worried just about having a child and not protecting their estructure.

So so
mattfrancis-0396314 June 2021
Scottish voiceovers were a big put off which for me just didn't at all go well. The movie though has good ratings and to be fair the film had a decent blend of curiosity, relationship struggles, strange behaviour, depression, real world issues and some of scenery is really fresh to see. The film gets off to an unusual and slow start, uncovering an unhappy couples issues not just an unhappy woman's issues. She's wanting sex with a hidden agenda for kids, he's probably unsure because there's probably better fish in the sea. But then a strange moment where a blonde neighbour half nude walks in in front the couple and a child, inappropriate, cringed. The rest of the film gets a bit more tense after this and regardless as to whether it's a bit disjointed. I'd say things could have been better but all in all it isn't bad. It's odd they always have to use a better quality of setting when these issues are all around effecting every day people. It's just because of the beautiful scenery and some of the real life issues that does enough to mean this wasn't a bad one.

Slow and beautiful
siderius_omar_nuncius27 April 2021
What a joy to watch a movie that slows you down and allows you to think and feel and look around you.

Not for the crowd. This is a masterly taken movie that takes you little by little into your own abyss of thoughts and feelings.

Good but confusing
pilar-3330814 November 2020
Is a good story with the message that If you try your best to get something and you do not get it ...make the best of it and be happy with what you got. The confuse part for me was the Vacation ending of the family next door ...is not clear if they all go home at the end.

melancholic, psychological drama
matejcasce18 May 2021
I liked contrast between two families, and some poetic symbolism, especially towards the end and at the ultimate end of the movie. Its slow, psychological movie, there are no twists, no action, no comedy... and it should be like that, so you can think more about psychological aspects of this situation, and also there is some room for poeticity thanks to its slow nature.

Thank you for telling this story
ev1368 June 2023
Yes, there are not a lot of obvious things that are happening in this movie. But a lot of layers of pain are displayed that deserve to be told. This is the story of so many couples out there. This is my story and I am thankful that someone considers it important enough to make a movie of a topic that is still a taboo in our society

The pain is displayed so subtle, that maybe not everyone might get all of it. The children they see everywhere around them and it's tearing out your heart. Not being able to have a normal sex live because everything is just about conceiving. The comments from strangers who ,mean it well'. The having to let go of how you imagined your life to be and almost everyone can have but just not you. The house you built for your family but you will just always be a couple.

If you did not get the movie, maybe you are simply not able to put yourself in someone else's shoes.
