Very entertaining flick for those who enjoy zombie movies
dctr6663 August 2012
Saying that this movie resembles Braindead, is exaggerating... "Mangue Negro" is a low budget Brazilian movie, with non-professional actors, with some flaws...but it's enjoyable...

The zombie characterization is very disgusting, in a good way...the blood scenes are very well planned...and the movie only slows down in the beginning...but after the first zombie appearance the movie continues very well paced...I enjoyed it...and I think many of you will too.

But keep in mind, that if you are going to see it because you've read that this is like Braindead you will be disappointed...but if you see it for what it is, a very entertaining zombie flick, you will enjoy it very much...

Gore Like "Braindead"
claudio_carvalho1 September 2009
In a polluted mangrove swamp, the locals recall the time when they could fish and catch mud crabs to sell and feed their families and themselves in their isolated community; now the swamp is dead and they can hardly find a fish or a crab in the dirty water. During a night, dead bodies raise from the swamp, attacking and biting the dwellers that transform into aggressive zombies. The local Luís (Walderrama dos Santos) fights against the monsters to survive and save the life of Raquel (Kika de Oliveira), on whom he has a crush.

The Brazilian"Mangue Negro" is a trash movie so gore that recalls Peter Jackson's "Braindead". The story is very simple, but the make-up and effects are surprisingly great and the hero uses a hatchet to get rid of the creatures that threatens his and his beloved lives in a bloodbath in the level of "Braindead". His romantic declaration to Raquel is hilarious. My vote is eight.

Fun zombie splatter movie from Brazil
sebpopcorn1 July 2013
In this movie people living on the edge of the mangrove swamp find their food becoming scarce and venture into a dangerous part of the swamp. This sets in motion an entertaining zombie bloodbath with plenty of splatter effects and proper groaning moaning shambling zombies.

I have to mention the soundtrack which keeps up a great beat during the action and is nice and eerie when they're in the swamp at night. It definitely adds something to the movie.

On the downside there are two old people in this movie who seem to be played by younger people with unconvincing latex masks which is a bit odd. One of them (the old lady) has a very annoying voice and much too much screen time. Other than that I liked the characters, mainly because they do a pretty convincing job of looking terrified. Especially the older fisherman, his sheer terror at being trapped in close quarters with the living dead is totally believable and funny to watch.

One day, in a fishermen and hunters's community, as poor and as timeless it can be, nature decides to show it's macabre side.

Warning: Spoilers
One day, in a fishermen and hunters's community, as poor and as timeless it can be, nature decides to show it's macabre side. From the mangrove swamp, where they get the wretched sustenance, Cannibal zombies emerge. Nobody knows the cause of this "contamination". The important thing is to run and survive, to run again. With every bite, parents, friends and brothers, become awful creatures.

In front of a horror that doesn't move back, not even with the daylight, that doesn't exempt fish or crustaceans, an obstinate and fearful survivor is revealed, skillful with the ax and terrible when the moment comes to declare to the brunet who makes his heart beat.

Best Brazilian Zombie Flick... Ever!
marcosxxxm12 September 2010
This movie is awesome! Its "Evil Dead" meets "Night of the Living Dead", but with a VERY Brazilian look and feel.

The pacing and the dialogue can be a bit slow at times, and some of the animations is clunky, but who cares?? The makeup and the gore in this flick are awesome!! You could not ask for anything more!

It is a well written film (despite the pacing problems), and the ending is short of genius. Also, the directing is spot on.

And I must give props to most of the actors. The main duo is great!

Great job! A Brazilian zombie movie to be proud of!

I also recommend "A Capital dos Mortos", but it has a way lower budget.

Buy this Movie! Mud Zombies rule!!

"Like Braindead" you gotta be kidding!
The_Kidd_II13 August 2011
I saw this movie based on the couple of reviews I saw here.

All telling there's gore like in Braindead. For you gore hounds out there, just skip this one, as there's like 2 or 3 good scenes AND THATS ALL!

Probably the movie makers themselves wrote this, to get more to buy this sorry excuse for a Gorefilm, actually I fast forwarded the last 20 mins of the film because it was so boring. They could easily have cut the film down to 20 mins, cause 1 hour 45 mins is WAYYY too long for this.

2 stars out of ten.

And thats FINAL!
