Animal rescue is often a race against the clock. Days, hours, or even just moments can be what stands between life and death for many dogs in dire condition. This week, "To The Rescue" celebrates the success stories of pups who were saved, in the nick of time. First, in Arkansas, our friends over at Bissell Pet Foundation take us on the ultimate rescue mission, to relieve an overrun local shelter and help dozens of dogs find their forever homes. Then in South Carolina, a family comes together to nurse a foster dog back to health. And in New York, a seasoned shelter volunteer receives the shock of a lifetime, when 20 fighting dogs are discovered hidden in a barn and need immediate help to escape. And finally, our rescue Hero of the Week goes out to an Oklahoma animal sanctuary that took in a blind dog, and taught her how to navigate the world.

Tommy is headed down to San Antonio Texas to change hearts and minds about the old 'dog catcher' caricature and prove that animal care officers are the real frontline heroes of dog rescue. Then, in Dallas, Jenny and her senior pup Ruby are busting the myth that old dogs can't learn new tricks. And in Illinois, Anne is breaking breed stereotypes with the help of her pitbull Roscoe, a therapy dog who helps foster children overcome their traumatic past. And finally, in Pennsylvania, rescue dogs take a pitstop at local prisons where they learn obedience skills from inmates who get a second chance to give back to their community.

Meanwhile, in California, we take a look at Rosie, a Wheaton terrier who is on the road to recovery. With the help of her loving mom Angela, and dog behaviorist Linn Boyke, Rosie learns to overcome her deep-seated fears.

Along the way, we discover the inspiring history of Tori Saylor, who was diagnosed with autism at the age of nineteen. With the help of her dog Ember, Tori gained confidence, and created a thriving family business, and a warm home to dogs that need one the most. Meanwhile, Washington State Melissa McKee gets a second chance at life through her dog Harper, who she trained in the Prison Pet Partnership Program while she was incarcerated. Lastly, in true underdog fashion we visit Dante, a dog that was hit by a car and, with the help of a loving vet, transformed into a dock diving champion.

Tommy visits the Alaqua Animal Refuge to meet rescue animals of all shapes, sizes and species. Alaqua is home to hundreds of rescue animals ranging from dogs, cats, horses, parrots, turkeys, tortoises and many more. Of the thousands of animals that founder Laurie Hood and her team have saved, this episode explores two particularly heartwarming stories. The first is Barely, a dog who, as his name suggests, barely survived his traumatic past only to land in a loving forever home with a woman who made her own remarkable recovery from trauma. We also visit Miss Martha, a sweet dog who made it out of a terrible hoarding situation and is now flourishing in her golden years.

DFAC continuously patrols Dowdy Ferry Road, an infamous area where helpless dogs are dumped and abandoned. The leader of DFAC, Jeremy Boss, continues to fight the good fight because of his dog Dowdy, who Jeremy rescued on this notorious street. Meanwhile Romeo, an energetic husky, gets a new leash on life after a bout with a wild animal. And finally, a local science teacher becomes an unlikely savior for a dog who was thrown into a lake. When these dogs needed a hero, these folks answered the call.

Meanwhile, we learn the story of Rowdy, a misunderstood border collie who finds his new purpose. And finally, Bailee, a desperate shelter pup makes a truly miraculous transformation.
