When Twister meets The Day After Tomorrow
Leofwine_draca7 December 2012
A cheesy B-movie combo of TWISTER and THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW, which sees Oregon plagued by an outbreak of government-created tornadoes which additionally have the power to freeze anything in their path (apart from the protagonists, of course).

The resulting film is as silly as they come, made on a low budget so there's plenty of talk and not so much disaster. When the weather outbreaks do hit, we're treated to flying CGI cars and hilarious shots of people/buildings turning to ice as the tornado passes over them. I don't mind a bit of cheese like this, but the rest of the film is so poor as to make actually watching it just not worthwhile.

The acting is extremely wooden, and the characters anything but true to life. Nobody seems to show any emotion and you wonder whether those involved are all Stepford creations. The thrills are nonsensical and short-lived, and the supposed technological explanations ridiculous. Sadly, this is exactly what I was expecting from a 'Syfy Channel' television movie, and I got it.

I think my screen just froze over!
paul_haakonsen14 February 2010
Warning: Spoilers
There are lots of disaster movies out there, most of them have good intentions, but fail to deliver the entertainment. "Ice Twisters" is one of those movies.

The CGI effects are bad, yes. Especially the twisters themselves. But if you can get past the bad effects, the movie is not that entirely bad. There are lots of worse disaster movies out there, "Quantum Apocalypse" and "Megafault", to name but a few.

When you sit down to watch these types of movies you want to see some destruction and mayhem, and there was very little of that shown in this movie.

The cast was adequate and the acting was adequate. The worst thing in the movie was the fact that these freezing storms and twisters would freeze buildings, soil, a tractor, people, an airplane and even a train, but for some unexplained reason the car with the "heroes" in it could drive undamaged through one of these ice twisters! Yeah, that makes perfect sense. Or like when people were commenting on the air being freezingly cold, but their breathing didn't show the 'steam' venting.

The concept of the movie is basically alright, but the lack of proper CGI effects to make you go "wow" is what brings this movie to a below average experience. You might consider this movie like an appetizer for a CGI-overload fest like "2012".

Ice twisters was fun to watch. I wouldn't buy it, but looked forward to seeing the end after dinner. It involves using technology to alter the weather with some unforeseen consequences. It surpasses a native American "rain dance" at first, however soon becomes something more than rain on demand. Not bad for a Sunday afternoon if your not a football fan in the fall/winter. The central characters are an award winning scientist turned fiction writer, because of governmental ulterior motives and his book writing assistant who suddenly encounters serious dangers in a small American town for a book signing and television interview. On the other side are the mobile scientists testing this new weather creating technology nearby where tornadoes have never been seen before. Tornadoes capable of freezing entire landscapes in 72 degree weather. The fight begins as the characters join forces in this rural area, and because of casualties the "evil" government gentlemen attempts to continue regardless, but when destroying the ice twisters is no longer an option, communications with them are inevitably very difficult to say the least. But will destroying them solve what has been put in motion closing in on populated areas?

Why do these movies have to be too unrealistic?
jighm9 January 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I liked the movie overall. There was a lot of excitement in it, even if the twisters weren't very realistic looking. What I hate about these types of movies, though, are the inconsistencies. These storms freeze everything in their paths - well, that is, anything not a star of the show. Take the poor farmer whose tractor froze up. Oh, and so did he. Yet, they are able to drive a truck right through the middle of multiple vortices and not only survive, but remain unfrozen. Hmm. Well, I like to see a little bit of the impossible in movies, sure. But, if one twister is going to freeze a tractor and a farmer and 3 twisters do nothing but blow around a truck a little bit, that's a bit on the absurd side. I will probably watch the movie again some day if it comes on again because I love tornadoes. Even Twister suffered from what I talked about above. Well, anyway. An interesting find.

SO bad i registered at IMDb to WARN people!
m-qasimraza17 February 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this apparently EXTREMELY low-budget movie based on one review i read on IMDb; i should have read more. It starts off a little abruptly but hey, some great movies do. but in its course it becomes a VERY bad mix of "The Day After Tomorrow" and the classic "Twister". Put those two movies together with really bad graphics and a beyond-amateurish cast and you've got Ice Twisters. whats more, they even chose the name "Jo" for the female lead (same as Helen Hunt in Twister). At times i couldn't believe how expressionless most of the actors were, especially when they were staring at a totally fake-looking ice-tornado coming their way. And in this one sequence with the fighter jets - the fireball that ensues? jeez, i could render the fire better.

to sum it up, i registered with IMDb for the sole reason that is to warn people about this crap-fest of a movie. save your money and 1.5 hrs.. buy your girl some nice flowers instead.

Good effort for a made for TV movie
XpocalypseSurvival6 March 2021
For a made for TV movie, this was pretty good. It is a pretty standard disaster story. It makes sense (if you just accept that the science is correct). Tends to be a bit cliche and predictable. The effects aren't great, but work well enough. Many reviews complain about the acting, but I thought they did a pretty good job. Yes, there are muted reactions that you get when you tell actors to pretend a bunch of ice tornadoes are about to kill you, but that is to be expected. Overall, a solid middle of the road film for me.

Survival lesson: hugging is good for your health, and for surviving ice tornadoes.

The Epitome of Bad Acting: Mark Moses
the_clueless_girl26 December 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Warning: This is not a review of the movie, it's more like a complaint of just how bad Hollywood can pick it's actors.

I really could have handled the mediocre CGI effects, the HIGHLY unrealistic plots. Really, it's almost expected in a disaster movie that something's bound to be off. I've never heard/seen any that have been perfect. But my dear god, what made me want to hit my head against a wall was Mark Moses's acting. I don't know if he took his role as a know-it-all science fiction author a little too far or something, but this was really the worst acting I've seen, hands down.

*SPOILER*SPOILER*SPOILER*

When Charlie Price's (played by Mark Moses) daughter dies, he just stands there. No sign of the world crashing down on him. Nope, this dude just throws his jacket over her and proceeds to "comfort" his devastated love interest. Even Joane (Camille Sullivan) shows more grief for his daughter than he does. The only thing he does is cover his face, probably to hide his embarrassment at how bad he was acting.

*END SPOILER*END SPOILER*

Like a fellow reviewer m-qasimraza said, I also went on here just to write this, going through the trouble of finding out my lost password just to log into IMDb. The movie could have easily been OK, no other worries/complaints than what other disaster movies do, but this guy just topped it.

Honestly, the movie is watchable. Just slap your hand over Mark Moses's face on the screen and mute the sound every time he appears and you'll be good to go. I really hope, for the sake of all the TV shows he's apparently made an appearance on, that he'll improve his acting skills. *SPOILER* Oh, and pretend you believe that satellites up in space can be hacked and controlled into heating up the Earth in a matter of hours. *END SPOILER*

POST-NOTE: Ryan Kennedy's acting was a temporary relief from Moses. He was good. Seriously, I don't know how he managed it when his character was doing pretty crazy, unrealistic stuff, but props for achieving that.

i hope the storms don't freeze the rays
sybolt_hoitinga28 July 2021
An awful lot of camera shaking going on and I also wonder why -when time is short and the hero needs to be in another place a.s.a.p- there always seems to be time stop the car beside the road (where a film crew just happens to be) and enjoy the scenery.

The music b.t.w. Is even worse than the acting.

Typical bad disaster movie.
13Funbags26 July 2019
The only difference is that instead of a corrupt oil man there's a corrupt government agent and instead of the hunk that saves the day, it's a rude old man that kinda saves the day. The only reason to watch this is to play a drinking game where every time they say "serif", you take a shot. What's a serif? "A slight projection finishing off a stroke of a letter in certain typefaces",

It's never too cold for a twister here
marshalphipps9 May 2017
For what Ice Twisters is worth, it's not bad, this is one of the better Syfy tornado films. While the plot does remind you of Storm Chasers: Revenge of the Twister (if you've seen it) this film focuses on the characters working together to resolve a major issue rather than a personal struggle around a tragedy.

The CGI is a noteworthy improvement (given the standards of Syfy) and the steady pacing keeps you watching. I can't say too much about character development since I was more focused on the plot and action.

Ice Twisters is a good B movie, in the end I felt satisfied since I didn't feel bored at any point while watching the movie.

A weird weather emergency.
michaelRokeefe19 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
The SyFy channel presents another disaster film; this directed by Steven R. Monroe. In response to a drought, a couple of Federal Science Foundation employees create a curious device designed to seed clouds for rain. Problems arise producing of all things flash freezing tornadoes. Just so happens a former FSF employee turned controversial science fiction author is in town. Charlie Price(Mark Moses)steps right into a situation that might have been taken from one of his novels. Of course weather experts are befuddled by the whole situation. Can anyone keep this weird weather from becoming a disaster? At times the CGI looks convincing. Don't expect to find a character to really like. Acting is numbing.

In the cast: Camile Sullivan, Luisa Kennedy, Alex Zahara, Chelan Simmons and Kaj-Erik Eriksen.

Twister Meets Day After Tomorrow
gaffaguy6930 March 2010
Worth A Watch!! This film does not fail to deliver, with action from the word go. I watched and was gripped the whole way through. Wondering what was going to happen next. Yes some parts were predictable, but in today's film industry, what film isn't? I will watch this film again and again, there are some great one-liners. I think this is a film that you need to watch to make your own decision as it will probably not appeal to everybody. The effects in the film were fantastic and allow you to really get a feel for what is going on in the movie, without potentially over-dramatising the action. The actors done a great job of portraying the events at hand and kept the movie believable throughout. Personally I loved this film and would recommend it to anyone.

Not bad, better than i thought it would be...
WelshFilmCraze8 December 2010
...but that's because I've become very wary of Films which appear on the SYFY channel and my expectations were lowered considerably.

ICE TWISTERS is a clichéd,unoriginal made-for-Cable movie, that's 'in the line of' (Rips off) other better theatrically released films (TWISTER & THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW to name two) but then I knew that before the Film started, all I wanted was to be entertained for 90 Minutes, and ICE TWISTERS does manage to do that - The FX and performances were acceptable.

Keep your expectations realistic, and you should find some enjoyment from this B-movie.

Not Something I would Buy
Eichermueller22 March 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I was disappointed with the movie. There was just something missing that one can't really place their finger on. Was it just me or was there too much trite in the plot? Acting so-so. I couldn't figure out why the twisters froze everything in their paths: entire landscapes, buildings, trains, etc. but did not freeze the car that the heroes where in. They had the ability to just drive through the ice twisters. As the twisters approached the Big City, the cars in the streets did not appear to "notice" what was heading their way. Nothing was mentioned in the movie about the population of the city. Did the people just all disappear? Really weird. It is not a movie that I would go out and purchase.

Not good
TheLittleSongbird22 June 2011
I have made no secret of disliking a lot of movies that air on the SyFy channel, but seeing as I have seen some good disaster movies in the past. Ice Twisters is not the worst I've seen on that channel by a long shot, however it is a very bad movie. The film does have some nice locations/sets, the concept was somewhat interesting and Ryan Kennedy was decent. But that's it. The script may have been corny and derivative, the story predictable with so many unrealistic elements to it, the direction lethargic, the pace dull, scenes ending abruptly with few suspenseful or dramatic build ups and the acting especially from the very bland lead patchy, but it is the special effects that bring the film down, most of them such as the ice twisters themselves look ridiculously fake. In conclusion, not a good movie. 3/10 Bethany Cox

Manipulating the Weather
Uriah437 July 2014
"Charlie Price" (Mark Moses) is a former scientist who has quit his profession in order to write science-fiction books. One day while at a book signing ceremony in a small Oregon town the weather suddenly changes and a tornado rips through the main street. Not long afterward he notices a former colleague named "Joanne" (Camille Sullivan) taking water samples and immediately connects the bizarre change in weather to her sudden appearance . After coaxing her and another scientist by the name of "Frank" (Robert Moloney) he finds out that they work for the Federal Science Foundation and that that have indeed been manipulating the weather as part of their research. Yet, while they have been able to change the weather they gradually realize that they cannot control it and this leads to disastrous consequences. At any rate, rather than detail the rest of the story and risk spoiling the film for those who haven't seen it, I will just say that even though the formula was pretty standard it was a fun movie all the same. Naturally, as a made-for-television movie there really isn't anything too graphic or risqué but then it wasn't necessary anyway. Although I didn't care for the rather far-fetched ending I thought that the overall action and special effects were essentially okay and the actors played their parts pretty well. That said, while this certainly isn't a great movie by any means I still found it to be a satisfactory movie all the same and I have rated it accordingly. Average.

IONOS-FEAR
nogodnomasters9 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The government uses drones to create and seed clouds that turn all Frankenstein into ice twisters. Only Charlie (Mark Moses) an ex-scientist and fiction writer without a clearance can save the world. Luisa D'Oliveira is our token hot Asian chick. Blah, blah blah.

This is a made for US TV movie using the standard formula for disaster films. I was bored within the first two minutes and it never let up.

Shallow and super-lightweight but quite fun
cjwilkinson-8180814 August 2020
The plot's silly, the effects are very average, and the characterizations not very deep, but it bowls along at a decent pace and is pretty watchable.

Thankfully its relatively small budget (at least that's how it comes across) prevents it from becoming the over-serious and pompous borefest of a blockbuster that it looks like the director was aiming for. Sometimes the lack of a huge budget can be a blessing.

USELESS
giuliodamicone15 June 2022
Modest photography, mediocre music, special effects limited to a minimum (the tornado, coincidentally, does not affect any inhabited center!). And then the two male interpreters Mark Moses and Ryan Kennedy compete in antipathy.

This movie was entertaining to watch with excellent performances by the cast and a script that was well written. The cinematography was also good despite some mistakes but the special effects could have been done better.

Fun If You Can Suspend Your Disbelief.
ladymidath31 January 2024
I love these Syfy movies with their over the top characters and wonky science. A science fiction writer who was once a scientist snarks his way into a science experiment to save the day.

This is a fun movie with reasonable acting and some solid action scenes.

As long as you don't question the realism in any way you will have a good time.

It is a little cliched, but it is what you expect. There are a slew of these types of movies and they are pretty much all the same.

Young people in peril, outsider expert who saves the day, geeky nerd types. Evil CEO types, savvy lady scientist who has a past with the saviour. It's all here. So buckle up and have fun.

You can't write it any better than that.
zjweiner22 December 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Let us begin our journey in a small town in Oregon. And by town, I really mean set of open tents in a field. This dramatic backdrop can only lead to unbelievable suspense, and the movie doesn't disappoint.

The character whom I sympathize with the most is the first character to die (within the first five minutes). Unfortunately he misses the rest of the movie, to his great loss. On the bright side, though, the actor who portrays him probably got great close-ups of the action (heart-pounding!), and you really can't put a price on that.

Charlie Price is portrayed by Mark Moses, who, like his namesake, parts the seas of confusion throughout this epic film. In the inaugural ice twister, Charlie's insight and wit are fundamental in fighting through the subterfuge brought on by the government, and he also rediscovers the love of his life, who kind of looks like a cross between Moses's wife and Jesus.

The FSF (Federal Science Foundation) vans help give the audience a glimpse into the convoluted mind of director Steven R. Monroe, who, unlike his namesake, was not a president. (Footnote: James Monroe was 5 ft. 4 inches tall). The countless plot twists and turns leaves the viewer as dizzy as if he had just been sucked into one of the ice twisters himself.

The buckwild dialogue relies mainly on dramatic pauses and oftentimes the buckwild lack of dialogue. Samuel L. Jackson* plays an incognito role as the assistant to the main nemesis, Frank, mysteriously left without a last name. Matt Damon, protruding into the film frequently from the other side of commercial breaks, really helped bring a note of lightness to the often quite grotesquely ginormous sexual tension present amongst any combination of two or more characters at any point in the film. (Spoiler: there is a three-person hug which does NOT lead to an Eiffel Tower scene.) Once again, SyFy has created an instant classic, following the footsteps of their last ice/rogue-science-gone-bad/government blockbuster, Ice Spiders. To wrap up, I won't tell you not to get your loved ones any other presents this holiday season, but this movie's presence on your DVR just might be enough.

*Dion Johnston is actually merely a poor man's Samuel L. Jackson, but a personal recommendation is to watch the movie and mentally substitute Samuel L. Jackson any time Johnston is on screen.

A pleasant surprise for a SyFy movie . . .
pilgrimtom23 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Most days, I've learned to avoid SyFy channel movies. Most are utter garbage . . . this one was pretty decent.

Many of the reviews note the similarity with Twister, and there is some of that. They then added in a few of the standard themes of SyFy movies, mostly the pseudo-science that fills most of these types of films, whether done for release in the cinema or released straight-to-video/TV. Still, they mostly made the premise work in this one.

The result was a engaging story with some pretty good (and some awful) FX. Most of the acting was pretty good, with Mark Moses and Ryan Kennedy providing strong performances.

In conclusion, I would watch it again given the opportunity.

Twister with Bad Acting
kewpiecleve22 April 2015
Just watched this movie on Sci-Fi. Although I rarely watch these movies for anything other than entertainment value this movie made me cringe. The overall bad acting was almost comical. I wonder if it was the fault of some very good actors like Ryan Kennedy or if it was the writing. It seems like the actors had no ability to change the wording of the script. That for me ruined the movie. I will say the CGI done in the movie was actually nice. I loved seeing the actual ice in the twisters. That made them more real. Overall though, I would only suggest watching this movie if you go into knowing the acting and I would stretch to say writing is horrible.

Let's twist tonight like we did last summer
Bernie44448 December 2023
He who controls the weather controls the world!

Yep, another twister movie with ice-cold humor. This time it follows our ice maiden from the Midwest to the West Coast. Her daughter becomes the main "Drama Queen", but many people take turns. Robert Moloney plays Frank, the "government" bad guy with nefarious plans. Alex Zahara plays Eric the bad guy's stupid drone. Mark Moses plays Charlie Price the scientist that walked away from science and allowing the whole bad guy scenario to take place.

Everyone keeps asking what's happening in doesn't listen to the answer.

So, let's twist tonight like we did last summer.
