This year’s Best Actress race may already be stacked with plenty of talents and turns to keep an eye on, but few are as out-and-out fierce as Frances McDormand’s in the lauded dramedy “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” The film has already enjoyed a hearty festival run, including stops at Venice and Toronto, where it won the prestigious People’s Choice Award. Featuring McDormand in a banger of a performance as a mother driven to some wild ends, the film will likely be one to beat during awards season, and the actress has emerged as its biggest gun.
But what do you need to know about McDormand as Mildred Hayes? Our exclusive new featurette, amusingly and officially titled “Why the Fck Not,” introduces McDormand’s latest role in truly indelible style. The video features McDormand herself sounding off on Mildred’s motivations — she’s a woman after justice,...

“Literally no one was a fan of the Silver Screen movies.” And thus is the legacy of Silver Screen Cinema Pictures International, perhaps Hollywood’s least loved and most unnecessary grindhouse movie distributor. As the Silver Screen team giddily jumped on board the exploitation movie craze of the ’70s and ’80s, the movie house churned out film after film, most of them very poor facsimiles of other, better films, nearly all of them avoided and derided by both the public and the critical sectors. (Never heard of it? You’re not alone.)
And then it was all gone. Every single Silver Screen print and negative was destroyed in a 1984 fire — talk about too hot for the screen — eradicating the legacy of a brand that most people have absolutely zero knowledge of ever having existed. But even Silver Screen, seemingly always destined to exist in wacky obscurity, couldn’t be kept totally down,...

13.2 The Rising Son
The second episode of season thirteen took things at a little slower pace, giving us a look at Jack’s development while also teasing us about Mary and Lucifer’s interaction in the alternate reality.
Jack is going to be an interesting yet challenging character to develop throughout this season. His parentage is certainly unique. Jack’s seemingly unlimited range of power will certainly be difficult to tackle and keep the audience interested if his character isn’t developed, and luckily it seems we’re getting that development as we travel from episode to episode.

Going by the reaction of the Internet, hundreds of people were injured when Lena Dunham was announced as joining the cast of American Horror Story: Cult. Most of these injuries were caused by violent, forceful rolling of the eyes. I was one of the eye-rollers. I watched Dunham's show Girls for several seasons, only to fall away from it when the self-indulgence got to be a bit too much for me. A little wariness and a little historical context for a mixed episode of Legends Of Tomorrow. Spoilers ahead...

3.2 Freakshow
I'm... not sure how I feel about the new status quo on Legends Of Tomorrow. The show has generally leaned into the humour and absurdity of the fringes of a superhero universe - it's one of the things that made it maybe the strongest superhero show on television. But the shift from last season's desperate, frantic sprint to save the universe from permanent alterations at the hands of three psychopaths that led to broken rules and more broken timelines, to this year's "gang of lovable screw ups" has been pretty jarring.
Freakshow was a little bit of a mess of an episode, one that helped crystalise my concerns.

I don't know about this one, folks. I know that Mixed Signals was supposed to serve as the true reset after the understandable weirdness of getting Barry out of the Speed Force in the season premiere. And I get that the showrunners want to send a message loud and clear about this season's new, lighter tone to help kind of wash away any lingering negativity from how intense season three was (disclosure: I didn't have a problem with it). But was it me, or did Mixed Signals just feel really forced?

Dr. Brian May has always lived at the intersection of art and science—and it’s been quite fruitful for the astrophysicist rock star. As a teenager growing up in the early ’60s, his youthful curiosity led him to construct a guitar with the help of his father. It was that very instrument, the famous “Red Special,” that served him almost exclusively as he conquered the world in Queen. Now he’s using technology to bring memories of his remarkable musical journey to life.

If you keep going long enough in a creative field, eventually someone will collect your stuff. If you’re reasonably successful, they’ll even collect the oddball stuff — the one-offs and blind alleys and test-beds and experiments that you made as you were working towards (or in between) the works that you were better known for.
Yes, you too can be the proud creator of an odds and sods collection, if you live long enough and work hard enough and get lucky enough. If your name is Bill Griffith, congratulations! That book was published by Fantagraphics in 2011 as Lost and Found: 1969-2003 .

The world of independent television remains a complicated one with no easy path to success, but many creators are finding that the best way to sell their visions is to make the pilots themselves. And a festival like SeriesFest, held last week in Denver, Colorado, can be a powerful opportunity to put that vision on display.

Lou was directed by Dave Mullins. It's not clear what kind of creature Lou is and what his role will be at the school. But is certain that this short film will make us all smile. What do you guys think?...

Each year, the Tribeca Film Festival fills out its schedule with a variety of events that extend far past the typical film fest fare, including their signature Tribeca Talks program and a continuing bent towards the possibilities of Virtual Reality. This year’s slate is no different, offering up intimate chats between industry luminaries (did you know that Robert Rodriguez and Barbra Streisand are pals? they are!) and special screening opportunities for projects both new (Ken Burns and Lynn Novick’s “The Vietnam War”) and classic (a “Godfather” one-two punch). There’s a little something for everyone here.

You can’t accuse the Tribeca Film Festival (April 19-30) of bandwagon jumping: Back in 2005, it screened the series finale of “Friends” outdoors on a Hudson pier for rapturous fans. Today, TV is a fait d’accompli as Tribeca expands its second annual TV program to 15 shows and five series. Golden-age TV draws viewers, Hollywood filmmakers, and a wider audience.
Last year, the TV program included world premieres of “The Night Of” (HBO, from Oscar-winning executive producer Steve Zaillian), “The Night Manager” (AMC, directed by Oscar-winning Susanne Bier), and “O.J.: Made in America” (Espn, directed by eventual Oscar-winner Ezra Edelman).

Unprecedentedly, nearly half of the projects are from female directors, about a third are by first-time directors and two rarely seen genres at Haf are included - science fiction and gothic thriller.

Superstore has emerged as one of the top workplace comedies of the past year, and the return from hiatus has been no exception. The show left off with some major cliffhangers, like Garrett and Dina hooking up, and Amy telling Adam that she wasn’t happy. They wasted no time in addressing some of these issues, and having fun with it. This week on Superstore: The store has to get rid of all the lost and found items for the year, so they have a lottery among the employees. Amy ends up with a pair of cargo shorts, but finds something inside them that

In Dev Patel’s career there will be pre-Lion movies, and post-Lion movies.
Pre-Lion, the British-born actor of Indian heritage seemed to play clean-cut, skinny, cute, but slightly nerdy guys. Think of him as well-meaning romantic Sonny Kapoor in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Chappie’s bespectacled robot designer Deon Wilson, and even as unlikely trivia champ Jamal in 2008’s Best Picture-winning Slumdog Millionaire, Patel’s breakthrough film.
But Lion, which finished second only to La La Land in the battle for the Toronto International Film Festival’s prestigious People’s Choice Award, proves he can be something much different. Burly, masculine, quiet, sexy…and Australian.

According to Fox 35 News, who first reported the story, Yoshi survived a toss into a busy stretch of road in Ocala, Florida, by Britton, who was subsequently arrested and charged with animal cruelty, assault on a police officer and resisting arrest.
“He had said to somebody at the scene or jail, he was trying to put the dog out of its misery, because it had been shot with an arrow,” Ocala Police Lt. Brian Young told the station.

Last week’s series premiere of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency was one of the most fun hours of television so far this year. Let’s take a look at what happened in this week’s second episode, “Lost and Found.” The episode opens with a look at why the kidnapped girl Todd encountered at the end of the premiere is in the position that she’s in. Just as the series likes to remind us, “everything is connected,” and we get a chance to see more of how Todd ties into her story. The narrative for Dirk Gently is (unsurprisingly) pretty complex, and Max Landis

“I thought there was something wrong with me and I was having such a hard time making it,” said Brown on Sunday as she reflected on early efforts to break into the business. “I thought, ‘Am I a fraud?’ And then the big one – ‘Do I deserve this?’ That mental mind-fuck is exhausting. Earlier in her address, Brown told attendees at the DGA Theater, “You have a story to tell that’s worthy. You have experience to share. You have a valid point of view and you should know this.”

Exclusive: Icelandic companies plan joint slate of Icelandic and English-language films including Óskar Jónasson’s Habeus Corpus.
Icelandic production companies Truenorth and Mystery are partnering on an ambitious slate of eight films to be shot over the next five years.
“Both companies were looking to expand into more European co-productions so we decided to join forces,” said Kristinn Thordarson, head of production at Truenorth.
David Oskar Olafsson of Mystery added that the slate’s eight productions are five in English and three in Icelandic.
“We had the same goals and ambitions,” Olafsson said “By joining teams, we felt we could be working on broader profile films.”
Leifur B Dagfinnsson of Truenorth said that both companies would continue to work on their own projects as well as the joint slate, and they would continue to have separate offices in Reykjavik.
The plan is to have eight to 10 films on the joint slate continually.

The Sean Bean-fronted Gothic cop show shuffles successfully off into the cold beyond for its closing chapter...
This review contains spoilers.
1.6 Lost And Found
So many potential plot directions had been set up for the finale of The Frankenstein Chronicles. The mysteries of missing children, stitched corpses, suspicious surgeons and untrustworthy politicians had stretched so coiled-tendon tense that the final snap promised an electrified punch. That the hit didn’t really ever come, leaving us flinching and “…huh?” was confusing, unfulfilling… and ballsy as hell.
This is how ITV mystery-thrillers are supposed to go – weird murder/murders, good casting, red herring, red herring, red herring, wrong person framed, good guy turns out to be bad guy, showdown in last ten minutes, hero wins/dies, credits roll, audience satisfied: can move on with lives. Lost And Found didn’t get the memo – instead, blowing its Big Bad reveal early on,...

Adela Quested (Judy Davis) finishes A Passage to India in the same manner she started the movie: her face is deformed by a window full of drops of rain. In both cases, she is looking at something more or less out of frame, blurred or uncertain, imaginary or physical. The placement of the camera, in the beginning and in the end, is at a different location. When the film starts, we are inside of a traveling agency and Adela is walking past the panoramic window. She stops for a second and stares at a large-sized model of a ship. We can’t see the ship entirely: just some chimneys, masts and ropes. We only know this is a ship because the previous shot—the first shot of the picture, actually—showed us this model. In the end of the movie, Adela is reading a letter concerning events that we have seen.

A review of tonight's "The Leftovers" coming up just as soon as I put my baby in a cardboard box... "You're no safer here than anywhere else. Of that, I am sure. There are no miracles in Miracle." -John One of the few downsides to "The Leftovers" adopting an even more Pov-driven approach than last season is that it can sometimes elongate story beats past an optimal point. This season's Murphy-centric first episode ended with John and Michael discovering that Evie, her friends, and all the water in the lake had vanished, but we couldn't find out what happened next right away because we had to first flip back in time to show events from the Garveys' perspective(*), then delay again so we could catch up with Laurie, Tommy, and Meg. (*) To return to the Desmond on "Lost" reference I made in my review of the premiere, this reminds...

With the beginning of a new year comes the end of Parenthood, the warm family drama that has lived through six seasons on NBC despite average ratings and mild critical attention. Over the course of its run, Parenthood has garnered a reputation fairly unique among today’s television landscape: that of a quiet tearjerker. By observing many types of familial relationships, from aunts and nieces to grandparents and grandchildren, the show manages to elicit emotions from overwhelming joy to authentic sorrow. Below are the most affecting moments from each season, and a look at how each of these scenes prove what the show is capable of at its best:
