In reality, when news of the southern succession reached the west, the army personnel stationed there were generally saddened and often held farewell parties for the southern soldiers who were leaving to fight for the Confederacy.
When South Carolina secedes, crowds in the streets immediately become hostile towards anyone wearing a blue Army uniform. However, in 1861 most southern officers who defected continued to wear their regular army jackets since the grey uniforms were not yet widely available. Thus, the general public would not know if someone wearing a blue uniform supported the north or the south.
