A piece of pure crap
slay79303 September 2009
Recently I have been back to my hometown in Italy for a short vacation and just yesterday I decided to hit the cinema to watch this Italian production called "Smile", looking forward for some healthy summer thrills over my back (moreover yesterday I was the only spectator in the dark room to watch it so it could be really creepy!)

As an hardcore horror fan, I'm always hopeful to see the "reborn" of Italian horror considering that in the past several of our directors delivered to the world nice pieces of horror and, though I was not particularly amazed by Smile trailer, I decided to give it a chance.

The chance started to break down after the first 10-15 minutes and the situation worsened until the end of the movie. How to describe "Smile"? I would say it's a mixture of poor ideas (most of them already seen in other movies with a much better production), stupid dialogs and situations, even poorer "special effects" (if there are any...) and silly acting (sometimes I have the feeling the actors don't believe that much in what they are doing).

Anything to save? A few. The location, shot in Morocco, was potentially good and attractive, plus the actor Armand Assante was the only one who, with his few seconds presence, gave to this movie a bit of "horror feeling".

I give to this movie 2 instead of 1 because I appreciate the effort that, anyway, has been done to create a horror genre made in Italy but unfortunately there is still a lot of hard work to do to guarantee the audience with a more satisfying vision.

Several students on a school holiday discover a mysterious camera, but after several of them start showing up dead after having their picture taken, they start to realize this camera is much more than they bargained for.

As a horror fan and especially a fan of Italian horror, I was hoping there would be something redeeming about this film. But, in short, there just was not much to offer and it seemed more inspired by 1990s American horror than Italian horror of any decade. A pity, really, because we are sadly lacking someone to pick up the reins from Bava, Soavi and Argento.

Not to say the film is a complete failure, but there is nothing that jumps out as must-see and it is a shame that such a good-looking film just has no soul.

What are you "kids" doing out here?
MTM237 May 2023
Oh man, now I hate to talk bad about Harriet Macmasters Greens films because im such a fan but good gravy this movie is awful. The voice dubbing is bad, I mean really bad and very noticeable. Terrible acting, terrible script, the whole thing screams high school play. The group is referred to as "kids" but everyone looks like they're at least 40 lol Also, what is with the makeup? They're going camping and trakking through the desert but the makeup looks like theyre on the way to the club. Why is Armand Assante in this? He's way too talented to be wasted in this film. The kills in this movie are amateurish looking at best and this movie commits the worst offense a horror movie can commit, not being scary. Not scary, not even a little bit. I will say though that the locations filmed are indeed beautiful so there's that.

Bad, Really Bad Crap
Mehki_Girl8 February 2022
Really cheap movie, so cheap the voices appear to be dubbed by people who have the physically inability to create any emotion in their voices. Although the actors appear to have the physical inability to act or create any kind of facial expression. Soi guess it doesn't matter.

Painful...actually painful, to watch
mickspix205419 January 2013
Have you ever had a dentist drill into the nerve of a tooth when you had no Novocaine ? If so, then you've come close to how painful it is to sit through this appalling excuse for a movie...or at least for the first half (or so) of it ( that's all I could stand...and THAT wasn't easy !)

The plot,(young Americans on a trip abroad start dying off in increasingly revolting ways) has only been done about a thousand times, and in 99 of every hundred of those thousand times it was done better.

The "acting" is not just an embarrassment to the acting profession, to to the entire movie industry...no... to the entire ENTERTAINMENT industry...no...to ALL OF HUMANITY !!!

The dialog was well beyond ludicrous, and the direction seemed to be non-existent.

If you've ever seen a movie for free that was so bad you wished you had paid to see it JUST so you could demand your money back...I'm going to guess that it was THIS movie.

To sum it all up...at one point one of the characters says "This is the worst vacation I've ever been on.", and I swear that the first thing that came into my mind was "Yeah ? Well cheer up pal...you COULD be watching THIS piece of crap !!!"

2nd worst film I have ever seen.
sicklittlebunny2 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Francesco Gasperoni owes me 7 hours of my life back! 84 mins for the film and the rest as compensation.

I really like Polaroid and thought this would be along the same lines. I was so disappointed!

This was at least one performer's debut and I am truly shocked they ever got work again based on this poor attempt. The film itself is awful, but the acting actually manages to make it worse. And on top of all that, half the time it's like either the characters have multiple personalities, or the writer does.

There were only 2 things that could possibly be considered redeeming features of this film and they are Armand Assante and the ending, that final little twist made me chuckle.

A group of (let's call them) "mature" university students, with a mental age of 13, go on holiday. The fact that half the group looked middle-aged added an extra level of weirdness to their inappropriately immature behaviour.

While still on the road, the aspiring photographer gets her camera stolen in the most ridiculous way possible. So she buys a Polaroid to replace it, from a creepy guy, in a creepy shop, who offers it for an eighth of what it is worth, because that's not remotely dodgy. And it makes perfect sense to take something with a very limited number of shots to photograph an entire holiday.

After a gratuitous sex scene, they happily leave one "friend" behind and actually start a fight with her ex for trying to check on her, because nothing bad ever happens to tourists (particularly female ones) who wander off alone.

The group almost immediately get lost in the woods, because not a single one among them can read a map, leading to random tantrums, individually and in small groups. They meet a hunter and take his picture,(all horror films need a random stranger to bump off early on) because a picture of a hunter butchering a deer is obviously all the evidence they'll need to get him arrested.....once they get out of the woods, which they'll need his help to do.

A bit more bickering and some teenage fumbling later, two more members of the group find a weak reason to take photos of each other (only one each to make sure there are enough picture to go round). It's all just so stupid!

Then just after being told that anybody who's photo is taken with the camera dies and lying about taking the hunter's pic, one of the group hears a scream and comes back smeared with blood shouting about needing to leave NOW!, so of course the rest of the group asks if something has happen, as if they can't see any possible explanation for his panic. Even after seeing the mutilated body, they're far more interested in arguing than working out what happened.

And just to prove some kind of point one of the guys took a forced selfie with one of the girls. I assume this was an attempt to build some kind of tension, but it was such a predictable "rebellion" and so childish it was less tense and more annoying.

After one of the group is supposedly turned to charcoal by a freak lightning strike, the rest find a handy cabin just a short distance away, that they'd somehow missed in their wandering and the hunter hadn't mentioned existed. And then the ghost attacks. One girl manages to walk backwards with such force she impales herself on a tree branch. And then there's the horror of a floating spade!

Having finally worked out that people are being killed by the things in the photo with them, they don't even try to work out what is going to happen to the one surviving photo subject. So he gets set on fire, then speared out of nowhere, never mind, we all move on.

The last 20ish minutes (if that) seem to be the entire inspiration for the film and the rest of the excruciating twaddle was all just to get to this point. The tragic story of the crime scene photographer who arrives at a scene to find the victim is his own child is pretty compelling. His wife commits suicide and he loses everything, including his mind. After losing his job he starts creating his own crime scenes by taking a photo of people and killing them with the things in that photo. Eventually he too commits suicide and 43 years later he is giving out cameras in a curio shop with his dead daughter. Oh and the hunter was already dead too, but came back to be murdered again because reasons. The end. No explanation for the resurrections, ghostly murders, or how exactly a disembodied lunatic called down lightning.

I am glad I watched till the end though, the trick with the car window was....magnifique! Because after all that had happened, she still took a picture of the car knowing what would happen if she'd got the driver in the shot.

A film so bad it made me wonder what Armand Assante did to deserve this.
jhpstrydom25 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This is probably one of the few times I'd say a film is the worst I've seen but simply put it is. From the direction to the script to the acting to just about everything is absolutely terrible.

1. To start the script has a severe lack of logic, in one scene when the group finds a dead body the one character suggests they go to the police. Then another character says they shouldn't because he believes the police will think they're involved in this person's death. Now that's a lot like saying if you go and report a crime to the police you'll get arrested for reporting a crime or as if they're actually going to the police to say "Hey dudes, we killed someone and we'd like you to come check out our awesome crime scene." As if the police would say. "Cool man, if we like it we'll arrest you." Also in the third act the very same character after being rattled by one of his friend's death develops a knack for asking the most annoyingly dumb questions one after the other almost without taking a breath and his behavior in that particular situation makes no sense what so ever.

2. To elaborate on the direction the film is shot in Morocco and judging from the establishing shots there's some nice scenery but during the dialog scenes most of the time the only thing we see are close up shots of faces and no scenery. While these close up shots are usually suppose to be about emotions the actors display virtually none. In fact the acting is so wooden you can use it to make a rocking chair.

Overall, this film truly is the worst film I've seen in a while. Armand Assante is one of my favorite actors hence the reason I sought this film out. He probably just did this film for the paycheck even though he only plays a small part in this film despite getting top billing. I recommend to not even give this film a second thought, it's a waste of time either way.

Interesting start, then you get kicked in the face by horrible actors and very "special" effects
needmedpack20 December 2014
"Smile" is a below average horror movie. You could say it's pretty bad even. The plot is thin, boring and predictable.

I was having hopes at the beginning of this flick, the oriental flair in Morocco and setting was very appealing to me and created some atmosphere. Also, the appearance of Armand Assante kept my hopes up.

However all this vanishes when the group starts the trip on their own. You notice all flaws quite soon: Dialogue is often irrelevant and irrational. The acting was horrible, you don't root for any of the characters.

Then there's the stupid plot where the characters die after a picture has been taken by an old, doomed camera.

Special Effects? Well, they are special that's for sure. The death scenes and effects are probably the weakest part of this movie, they were all very goofy and just plain bad.

Assante is in the movie for like 5 minutes, he probably noticed what a piece of garbage he was acting in halfway through.

Don't waste your time. 1/10

This was really really REALLY bad...
HpyCmpr15513 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Okay....I started watching this thinking it was going to be a remake of a J-horror movie like the Grudge or the Ring or Shutter. Then I said wait...what is all this Italian stuff?? Something isn't right here. My first clue that this was going to bad AWFUL was when this group of "students" (who all happen to look like they are about 30 years old)are traveling through the barren desert on a "holiday". LO and behold...a camera is stolen (but the girl carrying it in her shoulder bag doesn't notice that it is gone until several miles later when they arrive at a village...duh) and she just happens to find a "camera shop"...yeah right.... And she buys a camera that spits out Polaroids. Then along their way they get to the edge of the desert, park their fully stocked, fully, gassed up, fully functioning Land Rover to hike on a well marked trail carrying backpacks with minimal supplies into a forest complete with streams, woods, chirping birds, deer and (gasp)meet a mysterious nomadic hunter who just happens to speak perfect English. Only to get hopelessly lost after 5 minutes. The plot while thin. had possibilities. In this movie it is just a joke. The acting is world-class awful and the only good thing the movie had going for it was a very nice Land Rover and the spectacular scenery. If you like AWFUL movies,,,this one may be your cup of tea and you may SMILE while you're watching it.

Painfully bad.
keithloach2 November 2022
After the mild success of the 2022 film called Smile, I decided to give this different movie, of the same name, a try.

Well, simply put, it was so bad that it was a struggle to watch the entire movie.

There were countless times I just wanted to give up.

Horrible acting, horrible flow, bad editing. I felt endless moments of awkwardness at how poorly put together this one was.

The story, in its essence, has great potential. Its location is majestic and mysterious. The plot is an interesting idea that could have been portrayed with great imagination, vision, and thrill. Sadly, it was not even remotely done. It is bewildering to me at how badly this film messed it up.

Good enough plot...but annoying writing is hard to get past
warren112827 December 2022
Pros: The plot had a purpose. It was mysterious and revealed itself at a good pace. The payoff was pretty good too.

Cons (numerous): Why do writers think that annoying characters make the story more compelling, especially when their annoyance is due to stupid behavior. This isn't really a spoiler, but the group is in a very remote town far from home and packing up for the next destination when one is missing. The pissed off character who knows the other one got on a train for home says, "I don't know where she is, how should I know". Does this idiot realize none of them are going anywhere until the other person is accounted for? That is the most idiotic reaction with zero upside. If he would have held out not telling the others, like the childish infant he was acting like, they'd be stuck in that town for weeks looking for her. That isn't compelling writing for an emotional character, that's dumb. Also, early on, some of the characters are so annoyed with each other I was thinking why would this group that apparently hates each other plan a vacation together? If they would have smoothed out the rough edges (idiotic ones) it could have been a satisfying low-budget movie.

Something different
daletheminoltaman14 August 2011
I liked this movie a lot. It had a unique filming location, unique actors (one of the guys was a dork though, you will know when you watch it lol) and a unique plot. I especially liked the ending. It is an overall very entertaining movie. It sort of has the feeling of an 80's Italian horror movie. Not the same cookie cutter movies that all seem to be the rage lately. I am not sure why this film does not have a higher rating, it is much better than many of the 6 and 7 start rated IMDb horror movies, I suspect that directors and actors are rating up their trash movies so people will watch them. Give the movie a chance. I think most horror fans out there will enjoy it. No it is not a work of art but yes it is very entertaining and "interesting".

Very surprised by the hate.
berg-7453219 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
With more than 20 years of being deluged by found footage, fake ghost hunters or remakes of movies no one wanted. There are no new ideas no new settings no new monsters that strike fear unless Slenderman scares you because he doesn't scare me. While this movie has tons of issues and the haunted camera isn't a new idea and it has my biggest problem in horror movies today, a collection of characters i can't wait for them to die. I like the setting, I like the Moroccan gentleman not being portrayed as a rapacious savage looking to rob the men and rape the women and considering that the French have had the same sort of relationship we (America) have had with Native Americans it, at least to me, was surprising. It had some out of place emotions as well as a very odd singing performance that can only be because the female actor has a relationship with a person who financed, directed or produced the film. Maybe a similar movie exists but I thought the uniqueness added a couple of stars and with the dearth of new ideas new settings new stories we should all promote that. I get the problems the others had with this and as I already said it has issues but I enjoyed the escape from found footage fake ghost hunter documentaries or movies with guys killing presumably because the mask they have to wear do to deformity is scratchy and they don't like it.

Nothing to smile about...
paulclaassen2 July 2018
Hmm, not great at all. The acting is not all that good and the story itself is not motivated enough. Too many unanswered questions. Quite forgettable, actually. There are way too many other good movies out there to sit through this.

A plot that has been done over, and over and over and over. Most much worse then this one. Not bad, nothing new. I say B-
cosmo_tiger13 August 2011
"Take lots of pictures of your friends, what is a great moment if you can't prove that you had it?" A group of friends on vacation lose their camera. They meet a nice dealer (Assante) who give them a great deal on an old Polaroid camera. After the friends begin to wind up dead they wonder if the camera is the cause. I will start by saying that this was better then I expected. That said this is also nothing that hasn't been done before. Group of kids...evil guy...group gets killed off...yada yada yada. Much like a "Final Destination" type movie where you know who will die next and you just wait for it to happen. The best part of the movie hands down is the last 2 minutes, an average movie with a sweet ending. Overall, this plot has been done 1,000 times, but this time a camera is involved. This version is not that bad though. I give it a B-.

Would I watch again? - Not this one, but next month I'm sure another version will some out.

Interesting Premise, but not much else
hellsing2183 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I'll start off by saying that this is far from being the worst movie I've ever seen. Yeah it's an interesting concept, though one done a million times already, but that's all I can really say. The actors aren't very good, as their dialogue feels so forced and they are fairly wooden. The plot is a bit confusing too as it's about a killer camera, but then they suddenly set it in mountains that are supposedly haunted but the haunted part never comes up really. Why does a ghost run a camera shop? You want to stop the camera from ever killing again and instead of destroying it you try to use up all the film? There's just too many spots this falls apart at. There are one or two nice gore effects, but nothing to really justify watching the film overall.

So overdone it's laugh out loud funny!
Danno21014 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Where to begin...this movie has all of the horror tropes onboard: college 'kids' (who are all clearly in their mid thirties), a group excursion to another country, weed, a camping trip, woods, mysterious people who aren't ever explained, blood-drenched knives, random gunshots being fired in the woods by nobody, floating shovels - ok those are a bit novel and one of the highlights of the hilarity, and just wait until you see the aftermath of the shovel victim - a creepy kid, a felled tree blocking the road, becoming lost in the woods, unseen hit and run motorists, the same reused shot of the moon in the sky, night after night, a lantern falling over and burning down a cabin, woods that even in the clear daytime have heavy smoke coming from and going in all directions, and possibly the worst thunder and lightning you've seen since a B-movie from the late 1920s - holy heck does this one run the gamut.

We weren't terrified, nor even scared, and the few weak attempts at a jump scare fell flat with us, but as a campy horror movie, there's a lot to laugh about in this one.

Armand Assante steals the few scenes he's in, and the hunter is the only other good actor here. Although English isn't his native language, the middle-eastern actor portraying the hunter has impeccable English and is more convincing an actor than anyone else present. You'll want Tommy to die early on, but tough luck - you will have to suffer his incessant whining about EVERY FREAKING THING until near the end. Odd too is how the dialogue almost seems dubbed in English over everyone speaking English, as if a lot of the dialogue was re-recorded in post. The scenery is sometimes great and other times seems like it was shot in the woods behind your aunt's home, and there are some out of focus shots and one VERY out if focus shot, the aforementioned overuse of smoke here there and everywhere, a pitiful script, and some C-movie special effects round out the rest of this turkey.

Oddly, there's a symphony orchestra playing music thru much of it, which seems very out of place at times. I think they blew the budget on Armand and the orchestra, and made do with what they found in the couch cushions and under the car seats for the rest of it.

This is one to have some friends over, pour the beer and wine, and laugh at the absurdity of this clown car of a movie, and really enjoy the few scenes that make you laugh so hard that it almost feels like this movie is what gave the Wayans inspiration to make Scary Movie.
