The 63rd Melbourne International Film Festival, which began on July 31 and will go on till August 17, is screening a total of 11 Indian films in different categories.
The lineup includes recent films like Kanu Behl’s Titli (world premiere at Cannes Film Festival 2014) and Avinash Arun’s Killa (world premiere at Berlin Film Festival 2014) as well as festival favourites like Nagraj Manjule’s Fandry.

Rajesh Jala is a Delhi based film-maker whose documentary films have travelled around the world. His first fiction film project Chingari (The Spark) won the Incredible India Award at Nfdc Film Bazaar 2013.

Rajesh Jala’s feature-film project Chingari (The Spark) won a Global Film Initiative (Gfi) Grant at Cinemart, the co-production market of the International Film Festival Rotterdam. The Global Film Initiative awarded three equal grants of 10,000 Us Dollar each at Cinemart this year.
Chingari will be produced by Jala’s company The Elements and French producer Cedomir Kolar of Asap Films who boarded the project at Nfdc Film Bazaar in Goa last year. The project also won the Incredible India Award at Nfdc Film Bazaar.
Chingari revolves around Kabir, a young photographer, who enters the city of Banaras with a camera and a troubled past. He encounters two individuals Gagan, a young cremator and Amma an old widow. Jala has previously made award-winning documentaries such as Children of the Pyre and At the Stairs.

Rajesh Jala’s The Spark was awarded the $16,000 (Rs1m) Incredible India award at the close of Film Bazaar (Nov 20-24), while Kanu Behl’s Titli took the Prasad Digital Intermediate prize.
The Spark, which was selected for Film Bazaar’s Screenwriters’ Lab, tells the story of a riot victim who has a plan to take revenge, but is indecisive about taking action. Jala previously directed award-winning documentary Children Of The Pyre.
Produced by Dibakar Banerjee with backing from Yash Raj Films, Titli revolves around the volatile relationship between two brothers. Currently in post-production, the film was selected for Film Bazaar’s Work-in-Progress Lab. Behl has worked as assistant and co-writer on Banerjee’s previous features.

Ritesh Batra’s The Lunchbox won the Best Film award at the inaugural edition of Extravagant India! International Indian Film Festival in Paris.

The first edition of the Extravagant India! International Indian Film Festival will be launched in Paris in association with the Indian Embassy in Paris and the Paris City Hall showcasing Indian cinema from October 16-22, 2013.
The festival will have competitive and non-competitive sections along with interactions with filmmakers and meetings with industry experts to boost co-productions between India and France.
There are three sections in competition: feature films, short films and documentary films.
Feature films in competition are Ship of Theseus by Anand Gandhi, Shabdo by Kaushik Ganguly (French Premiere), Ugly by Anurag Kashyap, Lunchbox by Ritesh Batra, Raajneeti by Prakash Jha (French Premiere) and Kahaani by Sujoy Ghosh (French Premiere).

Six projects have been selected by the Nfdc (National Film Development Corporation, India) for the 2013 Screenwriters Lab, which is relocating to Toronto.
The Lab has previously been hosted by Locarno and Venice festivals, each having hosted two editions of the Screenwriters workshop.
The six projects, selected from more than 350 applications, will first be work-shopped in Toronto and further in Goa this November before being presented in the annual Film Bazaar Co-Pro Market.

Nina Paley's "Sita Sings the Blues" received the jury prize for best narrative feature and Rajesh Jala's "Children of the Pyre" took home the jury prize for best documentary feature at the seventh annual Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles, which concluded Sunday with closing-night film "Yes Madam, Sir."
Honorable mentions went to Nandita Das' "Firaaq" for narrative feature.
Dipti Gogna's "Narmeen" won the grand jury prize for best short, with Sushrut Jain's "Andheri" garnering an honorable mention.
