Arena = Paul Scofield
Richard Burton once said, "Of the 10 greatest moments in the theatre, eight are Paul Scofield's." Paul Scofield was one of the greatest actors of the 20th century--blessed with an achingly beautiful voice, an astonishing emotional range and incredible versatility. Sought after by Hollywood, Scofield shunned celebrity to live a quiet life in rural England. Today he is mostly known by one performance, Sir Thomas More in "A Man for All Seasons."
This documentary overview of his career presents wonderful footage--most of which can only be viewed in archives because much of his work has gone quietly out of print (if one can apply the term to radio, TV and film). This is partly due to Scofield, who seemed to have no interest in self-promotion and focused totally on his work, and not on creating a media franchise.
