Horror fans have been looking forward to seeing Mike Flanagan's Before I Wake since the film was teased in trailers back in 2015, but bankruptcy issues at Relativity Media delayed and ultimately brought the movie's release to a halt. Since that time, Flanagan directed two well-received films for Netflix, and the streaming service has now revealed that they will bring Before I Wake out of film purgatory and into the warm glow of the TV screen.
Netflix revealed the exciting Before I Wake news in their full announcement of titles being added to their streaming lineup in January of 2018. Starring Jacob Tremblay, Thomas Jane, and Kate Bosworth, Before I Wake will be available to watch on the streaming service beginning Friday, January 5th, marking its first official release in the Us (it was previously released internationally, including in the UK by Netflix).

Say this for 2018: It can’t be any worse than 2017, right? (Spoiler: It totally can.) At least Netflix’s first batch of offerings inspires cautious optimism in the new year, with everything from the entire “Godfather” trilogy, “Marie Antoinette,” five different “Batman” films and five different “Bring It On” movies (did you even know they’d made that many?), “Midnight in Paris,” the complete “Lethal Weapon” collection, “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory,” and “The Truman Show” coming to the streaming service in January.

As for Netflix Originals, there are several: “Before I Wake” and “Rotten” are both available to stream as of January 5, “Somebody Feed Phil” and “The Polka King” premiere a week later, “The Open House” arrives on the 19th, and “A Futile and Stupid Gesture” and “Dirty Money” both debut on the 26th.

There are now a staggering four sequels to 2000's feelgood cheerleading hit Bring It On, but are they any good?
This article contains spoilers for the assorted Bring It On movies.

2000’s Bring It On is a very odd duck.
It’s not that the film is particularly innovative about how it spins its narrative – there’s a pretty standard set of beats in place for a sports movie – but traditionally, sports movies don’t tend to have a predominantly female cast (and even something like A League Of Their Own was somewhat led by Tom Hanks). Not only that, it’s a movie with a predominately female cast that isn’t entirely focused on love or romance.

If only a show could believe in the shtick it has, and not decide that it not only needs two, but needs one to be a clever twist. Pitch has enough going on without throwing out a last-minute zinger. Worse, the show doesn’t need it, it doesn’t help anything, and it runs the risk of leaving a bad taste in your mouth. I’m tempted to tell you the point at which you should stop watching, and await the next episode.
As I said, Pitch has enough going on, and somewhat surprisingly, what with the overblown cliches that are tricky to avoid, it’s a refreshing joyride. It may seem like damning with faint praise, but the show’s best attribute is just that it adeptly dodges turning into something laughable. That isn’t because it’s doing anything wrong, but because the subject matter simply means that...

The new year is upon us, and it’s time to clean up Netflix once again. Don’t fear too much though, as much as we hate to see some of our favorites leave Netflix, they do a pretty good job at adding some great new content. We lose Almost Famous, A Clockwork Orange, American Psycho, The Graduate, Planes, Trains and Automobiles and all the Rocky movies – and we get Intolerable Cruelty, Training Day, The Rundown and a new Netflix Original for Degrassi: The Next Class.

It’s official: Come January, SNL will be adding a black woman to its cast. (And possibly two, though Lorne Michaels is reportedly wary of having too many broads on set. Sigh.)
That woman could be one of the 11 comedians who apparently auditioned for SNL in a special showcase at L.A.’s Groundlings Theater. Comedian Simone Shepherd tagged them all in an Instagram photo that has since been taken down — and after looking into each one, it’s safe to say that there’s a lot of talent here. So much for black women not being ready for the Not Ready for Primetime Players.

Holland Roden began acting as a hobby and has now parlayed her talent into a full-time career. She has guest starred on several hit television shows including Weeds (TV) Cold Case (TV), Lost (TV), and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (TV) as well as appearing in the film Bring it On: Fight to the Finish (2009). Holland's newest endeavor involves a starring role in MTV's highly anticipated new series Teen Wolf (TV), which is loosely based on the 1985 film starring Michael J. Fox. The show, which is scheduled to debut early this summer, contains a darker element than the original film and combines a hearty dose of suspense, romance, and modern teen drama. The buzz surrounding the show has been mounting since last fall and the cast, which also includes Tyler Posey as main character Scott McCall, Dylan O'Brien, Tyler Hoechlin, and Crystal Reed are ready and eager for the show's debut this June.

[1] Earlier this month, a in-house promotional teaser trailer leaked [2] for Soul Surfer, a drama about young, teenage surfer girl (played by Bridge To Terabithia/Race To Witch Mountain's AnnaSophia Robb) who "summons the courage to go back into the ocean after losing an arm in a shark attack." When I posted the teaser, I was kind of weirded out that it contained no hint of a shark attack -- the teaser made it out like the film is just a happy-go-lucky story about a teenage girl surfer. The new full length trailer which has premiered on EW [3] (via FirstShowing [4]) gives audiences the full reveal of what this story is really about. That and a really cheesy speech from Carrie Underwood. Written and directed by Sean McNamara (Bring it On: Fight To The Finish, Into The Blue 2: The Reef, Bratz, 3 Ninjas: High Noon at Mega Mountain), the film co-starring Dennis Quaid,...

The promise of a biopic focusing on Supremes founder Florence Ballard is the inevitability of a killer sound track. It’s also the beauty that can be derived from great personal and professional pain. Fortunately, Spirit of Life Films – which is bringing Blondie: The Florence Ballard Story to the big screen – has found an unbelievably apt talent to take the role of Blondie Ballard. Faith Evans has her own professional and personal dramatics that have unraveled in the public eye – thanks most in part to her marriage to rap icon Notorious B.I.G. Her acting is untested, but she has the experiences to draw upon to go meta-method here and make something raw and intimate. Plus, on an obvious note, her singing is unparalleled. On the negative side, the film will be directed by Bille Woodruff – the man behind Honey, Beauty Shop and the direct-to-video Bring It On: Fight to the Finish. It...

State Of Play
Seeing as Craig has already covered State Of Play I won’t go into much detail here.
I suggest you read his detailed review and all I’m going to add is that it really is an intelligent ensemble piece that has good acting from an impressive cast.
It’s nice to see a smart American film for a change, one that actually has something to say and a message to bring across. It’s a shame that it didn’t light up the box office because it deserved success.
Definitely worth your time if you are looking for a higher level of entertainment.
State Of Play is also available on Blu-Ray
Fast & Furious
The 4th in the series reunites the original cast for more pedal to the metal action.
This time Brian O’Conner and Dominic Toretto join forces to bring an evil heroin importer to justice.

Cheerleading has always been featured on Espn when they filmed Nationals but besides the negative stereotypes, cheerleaders never had a voice in Hollywood. That all changed in 2000 when the Bring It On franchise was born. Finally, the inner workings of a cheerleadership have been exposed and the line between the good and the bad has been drawn. Bring It On: Fight to the Finish follows Lina (Christina Milian) who moves from East La to the prime and proper Malibu to start a new life with her mother, her step-father, and her new step-sister. Having to leave her masterful squad Lina has a new challenge of turning a nothing sqaud into a squad worthly of Nationals. Cheerleading is an art and over the past nine years we have experienced the highs and lows that accompany competitive cheerleading in the Bring It On franchise. Another happy news comes from Christina Milian and The-Dream. After the twosome was reported to have tied the knot on September 4, they have been said to be parents soon. Us Magazine claimed they got information from a source who said that the songstress is expecting first child with The-Dream.
"The pregnancy was a surprise, but they were getting married regardless," the source told Us Magazine. However, the source did not mention how long Christina has been carrying the baby, while the singer and The-Dream also have not yet released any statement regarding her pregnancy news.

As the summer season closes out, what's probably the slowest week of the year for DVDs has arrived. Only one wide release film is on the slate, and even the catalog titles and television box sets are light. Regardless, we'll stifle a sigh and press on like always with this week's DVD Report.
"State of Play" is a murder mystery whodunit, subbing in reporters for cops. Russell Crowe plays an old school, boots-on-the-ground investigative journalist who doesn't get the whole blogging thing. He also happens to be old college roommates with a powerful politician who, whoops, just had his mistress offed, sending Crowe on a mission to uncover a growing conspiracy behind the killing. The film comes from director Kevin MacDonald, who showed great promise with "Last King of Scotland," and its cast roster is filled with heavy-hitting names like Rachel McAdams, Helen Mirren, Jeff Daniels, Robin Wright Penn, Ben Affleck and Jason Bateman.

State of Play
A Russell Crowe-starring thriller that entangles 3 deaths, Washington politics, old-school journalism, and new wave blogging, State of Play is by far your best mainstream choice this week. In his review, Jeffrey M. Anderson said: "it's probably the best newspaper/journalism movie in years," and "State of Play moves well, with grace and intelligence as well as a measure of scrappiness and a sense of working by the seat of one's pants." Buy it. Also on Blu-ray.

A movie co-starring Mariah Carrey might not seem like a noteworthy piece of cinema, but it's more than meets the eye. The film focuses on woman and her brothers who set out to find their estranged father in hopes that he will help save their leukemia-suffering sibling. In his review, Joel Keller said: "Tennessee isn't action-packed, but it has a story that...
