Stars: Jonnie Hurn, Chloe Farnworth, Dan Burman | Written and Directed by Drew Cullingham
Drew Cullingham, writer/director of the Western vampire flick Umbrage: The First Vampire, returns with The Devil’s Bargain, a apocalyptic tale set in 1974 and shot on a shoestring budget in twenty-four hours over four days, using an experimental ‘pinhole’ technique and distributed outside the UK’s censorship regime via streaming service Distrify.
With earth about to be obliterated by a massive asteroid, Adi (Hurn) and his young wife Ange (Farnworth), haunted by memories of the death of their son, journey to the idyllic rural setting where he was conceived, determined to shed clothes, inhibitions and psychological traumas before the planet is destroyed forever. But the arrival of Luca (Burman), a charismatic and mysterious young photographer, turns what’s left of their world upside-down and the horror to come is of biblical proportions.

The Horror Channel “Movie Of The Month” is Drew Cullingham’s Umbrage: The First Vampire, which is broadcast on Friday 22nd June. The film stars legendary British actor Doug Bradley (Hellraiser) and concerns an unscrupulous antique dealer’s ancient mirror that serves as a portal for shadowy beings to be unleashed into the night with a thirst for blood.
Drew talks about his outstanding directorial debut and his plans for the future….
How did you start in the movie business?
DC: Slowly! There was a time when all the things I take for granted now, all the people (actors and crew) and all the facilities and so on, were a faraway dream. I worked a little in TV, mostly filming food related VTs for live shows, and I cut my teeth bit by bit on a few short films. Of course even then I was begging, borrowing and stealing in...

"Umbrage is a dark fairytale, mixing mythology, horror, and western styles, to create a unique and intriguing film like no other."
So says the whoever wrote the liner notes on the dvd box, and they state the truth. Umbrage is like no other films I've seen, and I am very grateful for that.
Our dark fairy tale opens in the old west, where an unidentified gunslinger (Hurn) is a gunnin' for a mysterious stranger in a bar. It's interesting to note that these two seem to be the only ones in town. The gunslinger gets body checked by an unidentified woman, who proceeds to chow down on our hapless desperado, as mysterious stranger watches from the doorway.
Jump ahead to present day England. Jacob (Bradley) is bringing his pregnant wife (Vallorani) and 30-year-old 18-year-old assistant,...

Umbrage: The First Vampire
Stars: Doug Bradley, Rita Ramnani, Jonnie Hurn, Natalie Celino | Written and Directed by Drew Cullingham
Did you know that before Eve existed Adam had another wife named Lilith? Did you know vampire cowboys can be fans of Buffy? These are two of the things you will find out when you watch Umbrage: The First Vampire.
When this movie starts off like some cowboy movie with a vampire attack you think this may be the setting for the movie, but you would be wrong. After this initial attack we are taken to Europe, yet the music in the background keeps the whole country and western feel which gives it an odd feeling really. This does fit the movie as a whole though as I would describe it as odd.

Quite often, the universal definition of the vampire gets bent out of shape in cinema. Either there is too much lust, or not enough blood. Writers and creators have often spun a new take on the creature of the night and there is no escaping the romance. The flavours that exist can vary, and for filmmaker Drew Cullingham, Umbrage: The First Vampire is his vision of two loves—or should that be three?
"I guess I couldn't decide whether I wanted to do a western, a horror, or a drama," jokes Cullingham.
This auteur has no problems with mixing up the genres, and sometimes it can lead to an exciting product. At other times, the product is simply misunderstood.

December 2010 - Hal MacDermot
The depths of December and a frozen wood in the heart of the English countryside; acrid smoke drifts through the bare trees… could you dream of a better place to watch a running battle between a small band of military survivors and a horde of blood thirsty zombies?
The original Zombie Diaries was shot in a video diary style and told the interweaving stories of three groups of people in the immediate aftermath of a zombie virus apocalypse. It’s a great movie and was shot for zero budget. This time, with the help of producer Rob Weston (and those Weinstein chaps) there is more money and there are more zombies.
The film makers, however, have stayed true to their original guerrilla spirit, witness the fact that they recruited their zombie extras via Facebook, and also through an open casting call broadcast on local BBC TV news.

Umbrage Movie PosterDirector/writer: Drew Cullingham.
Umbrage is a genre bender of a film shot in London, which was completed in 2010. The film might receive a release in the United Kingdom in 2010 with a forthcoming release in Australia later this year. North American rights have not been sold by the distributor, Left Film; yet the film is deserving of a release here as Umbrage, another word for a shadow or apparition, utilizes bits and pieces from vampire films, westerns, bible stories and even be Greek mythology. The director correctly notes that the film is "ambitious" (Quiet). However, the use of so many genres increases the likelihood that fans will like all, or at least some part of this vampire-styled flick.
The short version of the film's plot involves the traditional journey of a hero to the underworld like many before e.g. Achilles, Orpheus, Theseus and many more. Except this time the hero is a fanged cowboy with a bone to pick with hell's ruler and in this story, the devil has a more feminine, womanly physique.

Umbrage is a horror styled vampire thriller set in the "Old West," and oddly enough this reviewer mentioned that there are very few horror themed Westerns released a few weeks ago (Umbrage). Now, with Revelation Trail, The Devil's Crossing, and Deadwalkers, there seems to be a wide range of films in this very unique sub-genre. Umbrage will add a vampire angle with tales of ancient antique deals, and mutilated corpses plus cowboys and six-shooters. Have a watch of a new clip for Umbrage, which has secured some international distribution, with domestic distro' forthcoming (London, England), inside.
A partial synopsis for Umbrage here:
"In the Old West, the assassination of an aging cowboy is thwarted by a sultry vampiress, the would-be killer left for dead in the dust…
A hundred years later an ancient obsidian mirror, long unearthed from the Mesopotamian desert, is liberated from an American collector’s vault and illegally transported to Europe.

Our protagonists, Lee and Nicole, have just gotten engaged. However, the engagement ring Lee has brought is, in fact, cursed. Consequently, Nicole is stalked by a rather annoyed ghostly bride (Josephine). Josephine had been jilted before her wedding day and decides to ruin the big day for the next bride who ends up wearing her ring...
Hellbride is one of those very rare, yet pleasant, little oddities. It’s odd because it could be the first film I’ve seen that hard to categorise in terms of genre. I was expecting a comedy horror hybrid, yet it’s much more than that.
It's part comedy, part chick-flick, part drama, part slapstick, part romance, part thriller and there’s even some stunning graphic novel-esque animation at...

Have we not really seen a good vampire film since Near Dark? The Forsaken? Nope. Let the Right One In comes very close, but despite that beautiful film's merits, when was the last time we were introduced to an iconic vampire character? Buffy and Angel maybe, but they are T.V. icons. Perhaps more to the point; when have we been given what we always craved? An Irish cowboy vampire! The answer is never - until now. Drew Cullingham’s soon-to-be released debut indie feature, Umbrage, is a very unique type of horror film – if that’s even what you want to call it.
Basically, the film tells the tale of a mysterious mirror which causes evil forces to be released into the open and consequently turns the world of an antiques...
