First off, Sci-Fi is my favourite genre - this movie however is only sci-fi in respect to Space being the only locale possible for its premise.

I found the movie's quirky, extreme low budget effects a perfect match tonally for its overall feel - and it even gave me a few giggles. If however, you require ALL your sci-fi films to be hyper-realistic and filled to the brim with the latest generation CGI - you best skip this one.

Comedy-wise, you're not likely to have too many great belly laughs either, but the script and the Leads fantastic chemistry will ensure you have a smile on your face for the majority of it.

As I said, this movie is simple - Very - but if you want to curl up on your lounge for 90 minutes with your partner {or prospective partner} , be well entertained, and finish with a warm fuzzy feeling - you won't be disappointed.

I've never heard of Zoe Chao, but she is quite charming! And this is probably the first non-Marvel movie with Anthony Mackie that I actually enjoyed. Together, they make this idea work. And the levity of the interesting visuals works as a nice contrast to the seriousness of the situation, and it's quite different from my expectations.. which further assisted my enjoyment very much.

It's rather simple, but very personal. Goes to show that you don't really require a gigantic budget, when the idea and execution can properly entertain you for 1 hour and a half.

Easy recommendation for anyone looking for "Comedy + Romantic + Sci Fi" story.

In fresh dramedy "If You Were The Last" astronauts Anthony Mackie & Zoe Chao are stranded alone in space for three years on a charmingly lo-tech spaceship (which is in no way authentic - that's not the film's vibe) with no comms to earth but food, air and batches of music & movies. To pass time they ponder issues like the pro's & cons of sleeping with each other - including the emotions involved (or lack thereof). Geoff Stults & especially Natalie Morales give good support, and Kristian Mercado directs with fine quirky style on his debut, matching debut writer Angela Bourassa's script that's more light, bright, chick-flick than legitimate sci-fi. A good, effective, original film.

Cute little romance movie with a sweet storyline. The sci-fi effects in space are done super cute, almost like a theatre play. The romance part is understandable, I mean, if you are locked up with someone for 3 years, shut out of the "real world", of course you are going to have a special bond with that person. Both main actors are entertaining to watch and have cute chemistry together. I fairly enjoyed this light romance comedy! Don't expect a high production with high budget CGI and whatnot. Just enjoy the lighthearted romance and the cute set in space, then you will have a great time watching this movie.

At the point of this writing there was only one other review posted and I completely disagree with there opinion. I actually really enjoyed this movie. Unlike the other review I was immediately hooked. I found this movie, while I admit is fairly predictable, to be unique and original. It was quirky and poignant with a healthy dose of heart. Both main characters were relatable and, more importantly, likable. The acting was great. Production was fantastic. Music was spot on. Honestly, I have no complaints. Listen, this movie isn't going to be studied in film school anytime soon and it probably won't win many awards but, at a time when it seems like every movie is either a sequel or a remake or based on a toy from the 80's it's nice to see something different. I enjoyed it.

The storyline has some interesting beats, and the performances by the leads (Anthony Mackie & Zoe Chao) are endearing. While it's best not to dig greatly into the sci-fi aspects of the film, this is one of those films that's uplifted greatly by the camaraderie the protagonists share. Even routine activities carry a delightful charm, and given the isolated setting of the film, it also helps that both the leads are fantastic dancers.

The writing (especially, the dialogues) gives them both sufficient shades and spends time detailing their pop-culture preferences (music, cinema), making it easy to connect with their mindsets. A particular decision they decide to take (and the moral dilemma behind it) is presented quite nicely. The visuals exude a Wes Anderson-esque charm; the colors are rich and bright, making the environs of the "space box" really appealing. Some of the storytelling steam is lost in the final 30 minutes and the resolution to the film's core problem is rather quick, but it sure doesn't take much away from its watchability factor.

O be honest, I was expecting a sci-fi movie. However, after a few minutes, I realized that it certainly wasn't. Instead, it felt more like a stage drama with cardboard backgrounds. Honestly, watching this on the big screen was not my cup of tea.

The humor and comedy, which were present in small doses, didn't really appeal to my taste. Throughout the movie, except for a few moments, it was rather unentertaining and, for the most part, quite boring. The conclusion was very predictable and well-known.

As for Anthony Mackie, he appeared in a completely different look and gave a decent performance. Unfortunately, this movie, even if overlooked by his fans, wouldn't be a big loss.

Zoe Chao, someone I was not familiar with before this, didn't leave a strong impression on me, and I don't have much interest in getting to know her better after this experience.

There is so much to like, from the cardboard space shuttle and cardboard planets and Styrofoam asteroids, to the very likeable Jane and Adam. No one would believe that would be any interior of a spacecraft, but it is perfect for the story. It is not meant to be a sci-fi documentary. And Adam with his obsession with Pop Tarts. They are stranded in space, no communications and no navigation and the movie starts out with a cost/benefit discussion as to whether they could/should be rescued. And they have been in space three years. Jane and Adam are married, but not to each other. Benson was along, but now only a skeleton in a spacesuit, and one doesn't get the story until late in the film. It is a very gentle rom-com on a very human level. What if they cannot get home? Jane tries working on the wiring to get things to work, but there are billions of possibilities, as the wires are not labeled. It is breezy, with lots of funny parts, including that Adam was terrified watching the film Alien. Yes, they have movies and music, and even a farm with chickens and a goat. And Adam is working on crossing marijuana with a blueberry plant. Suddenly, after a rewiring, they still don't have communications, but they get navigation, so they can be back on earth in three weeks. How is that going to work out?

Went to go see this because of the actor Anhony Macky, but what a disappointment it turned out to be...

The bad: it aint funny. Didnt laugh once. Supposedly a comedy without any laughs? It pretended to be (some sort of) drama as well, but that claim is simply ridiculous. And the scifi part looks laughably amateurish.

This looks like a Corona era leftover in which period all sorts of restrictions were placed on how many filmcrew personnel and actors could be on set simultaneously. This is the disastrous result.

Not any good then? Those who like to watch average television soaps might have a go at it, For anyone seriously expecting to see a quality feature movie,you have been warned...

At first, I thought this movie was a time stretch...meaning it would've been a perfect tale for an anthology TV show but felt too stretched out to meet a standard movie length. But! Then I realized that it had effectively latched itself to my heart and made it ache for these characters. Well played! I very much appreciated that they didn't leave the story in space. I get that it's a whole vibe to leave movies on an open-ended note, but I prefer a nearly wrapped up bow. Call me unsophisticated, but I'm a sucker for a full love story. I also commend the team for managing to make a low-budget space movie that felt better than if it was done with and endless budget. The cutesy space stuff worked for me, it made it more endearing. Thoroughly enjoyed this movie.

One of Roger Ebert's most unappreciated legacies is his "20 Minute Test." If you are not hooked by the movie in the first 20 minutes, it is time to pull the plug. This is yet another "hi concept" film from Tinseltown, that being insider code for a movie so far from traditional plot arcs that literally the only one who completely understands what is happening is the writer. The larger question, the one nobody is asking, is why so many critics fell in love with the flic, basically calling it one of the best comedies of all time? I went in blind not knowing what this movie is about and I didn't really took the film seriously, I just wanted something to watch while I eat my meal then drink coffee afterwards. What does that have to do with this review? Because that was what this movie is like..

The movie jumped right into it and the audience was forced to watch the platonic bond between the 2 stars, but I never really felt the chemistry between the two. They don't really look good together. I wasn't feeling it, it didn't convince me. Unlike the movie Passengers which is similar to this, Chris and Jennifer's chemistry was on fire from the get go.

Now as I mentioned before, The meal I was eating as I was watching wasn't that good like a 5/10, but I was forced to eat it because I was hungry and nothing worth it in the fridge. That is what this movie was like the first 40min to about 1hr into runtime. Then it just clicks. The last 30 mins made this to a 7/10. The coffee.

Warm and sweet. Taking slow sips because its hot and it burns. Ironically, this was the time when the pair were not together after being stuck inside a spaceship, lost in space for 3 years, I was actually missing them together and I didn't even really feel that vibe and chemistry when they were together! So what gives?

Structure and character development. Certain events in the last 30 mins was where it all came together that it pulls you in. One of the most realistic love stories I've seen and I'm not even that interested in this genre. All that being said, The OST is also captivating. The songs were nice too.

I'm gonna cut this short as I don't like reading long reviews. This is not a chick flick per se, it's more of a love story. A pretty good one.

This movie is a blasphemy on NASA. It's also about as funny as an asteroid belt. The writer can't tell if you are 7 years old or 17 years old. Imagine having Anthony Mackie and wasting it by having his character have pathetic taste in music. As if he would have anything but THE JAMS.

This film doesn't belong in sci-fi, it doesn't belong in comedy, it belongs in silly and stupid.

I suppose the only minor redeeming quality is the cassette futurism aesthetic, which is kind of quirky and cool, but wasted on this film.

Having said all this, if you like the first 20 minutes of the film, you'll probably like the whole thing. It's just the same theme over and over.

Two surviving astronauts out of three, Adam and Jane have been stranded in outer space for over 1000 days with both navigation and communication system down. As the rescue is most unlikely to happen, they spend the days debating over when to bang? Ofcourse they have chickens and a goat living with them, providing them with eggs and milk. Out of all the reasons to not have sex, 2nd reason being married, they debate over and over again, to come to a conclusion. Will sex make them realize they belong together and what happens when they do get back to earth forms rest of the story.

The idea was indeed fun but the execution completely faltered. The duo of Anthony Mackie and Zoe Chao, remained charming throughout, making their conversation quirky. But for two consenting adults, debating over sex like two teenagers and that alone dragging for an hour, simply stopped being funny. The actors still tried their best yet their romance literally lacked the magic inspite of them being charming. The last act was painfully dragged for a predictable end and just for these two, I wished there were something more to the script as this film didn't do any justice to their talent. Overall, it was a missed opportunity.

Zoe Chao is electric and Anthony Mackie is studly in this sizzling dance movie set mainly in space. Expressive set design, including an emoting 8-bit computer screen, brilliant other-worldly use of light and colour, and a dash of home-made charm make a surprisingly robust aesthetic that supports the dancing conversations between the two leads. If you're wondering whether a romance movie has a love scene, it certainly does (why else get Anthony Mackie, who can do with his pecs what it took Rock Hudson a whole torso?), one that goes to great length and to a few surprising places. Also, featuring the fabulous Natalie Morales as a super hot state governor who rues the day she chose politics over dance class.

I love Anthony Mackie so of course I had to try this movie, but it really wasn't much fun to watch. Sure, it's a popcorn flick and the two leads are cute together but in a non-romantic way.... and that's the problem. I just didn't get them as a couple, as colleagues yes, but romantically no. Also, I just didn't like the silly cartoon take on a science fiction film. If they wanted to use those kinds of antics, they should have gone for more of a Lower Decks vibe. I was so bored of the whole thing by the middle of the movie I fast forwarded to the end. I beginning to think these straight to streaming movies are mostly silly faire.

I gave it an unequivocal nine (which I believe, if memory serves, I've only matched or exceeded for Rick and Morty and the EPIC David Attenbourough documentaries - seriously....) Bear in mind that I'm a 50 some odd, straight, single white guy and though I love a good, what we used to call 'chick flicks', but almost certainly wouldn't dare to these days - idk it just all worked for me - maybe I was stuck in a sentimental mood but, I mean literally I laughed I cried... Soooo ya know.... Run Dont walk!?? Lol - I hope you enjoy. (and if not, I mean I'd offer to refund your admission price but... I mean... Right?

As an "actor", Anthony Mackie might fill the suit of the slightly cocky and selfassured Falcon in the MCU.

Ok, this movie is by no means a high budget one, quite the opposite. It's a low-budget project that most likely was written by someone in their early teens and now finally realized as a full length movie.

In my opinion, it should have stayed as a short story since the entire synopsis makes for less than 30min of any kind of scripting.

Add to that a very predictable ending and some very ... VERY uninspired support roles, and the best I would say about this movie, is that the other main character at least is a fresh and believable character ... worth fast-forwarding and watch the movie for just to say "I saw here before she became famous".

Already being gone some years. With countless efforts to fix the parts that are broken with their ship and failing it's becoming evident that they may never get home to their significant others. For "Adam" his wife "Savannah" played by Natalie Morales. For "Jane" is her husband "Tom".

All "Jane" and "Adam" have are their music, movies, and routines that are keeping them sane. They seem to have made a stable environment for themselves. But in space, a new problem is always around the corner. This has made their bond grow expeditiously.

What will happen if they decide to take their friendship in a different direction to bypass time? Find out what arguments and the potential repercussions they'll go through from this hypothetical scenario. In this sci-fi romantic comedy.

"If You Were the Last" was a fun and entertaining romantic comedy. With the backdrop of space, it made for an interesting film. I'm not usually a fan of romantic comedies but if it's done right I can be persuaded. This was done right.

I liked the actors that were cast. Anthony Mackie and Zoe Chao's chemistry was believable. You could tell they didn't have the biggest budget, especially for it to give the illusion that they were in space. Even with that, it was done right. Kristian Mercado did an excellent job filming this. They made the budget they had work.

I like Angela Bourassa's writing. It was layered with different points in the film that switched up the vibe and added to the overall interest of the viewer. A good streaming film and a film I wouldn't have been mad at if I paid to see it at the cinema. I give it four mor fires 🔥🔥🔥🔥.

I enjoy Anthony Mackie in many projects so that's a win and love sci-if this is one is kinda cheesy with plenty of charm and humor packed in well. If you Were the Last focuses on 2 lovely beings that make the most of being secluded in outer space it's much cuter than id imagine nice for romance fans more anything. The special effects are the biggest flaw the atmosphere outside doesn't look as good as most in the genre even the ship looks like it's from a porno movie otherwise not to bad I almost want to be annoyed with several aspects but it is a lovely one with more to enjoy overtime I was hoping to like more though!

I'm a huge fan of the sci-fi genre, and at first, I was taken aback by the absence of high-tech CGI scenes. Instead, there were handmade, papier-mâché visuals. But as I delved deeper, the brilliance shone through. It may not be pure genius, but the intent was clear and authentic. The romance element surprised me in the best way, making me root for two very charismatic leads who gave it their all, portraying their roles with authenticity and charm. Will it have a fairy-tale ending? I'll leave that for you to discover.

Being an avid sci-fi enthusiast withOUT a soft corner for romance, I found it refreshing that the absence of flashy CGI, spaceships, and aliens didn't dampen my spirits. The movie leaves a lasting impression, and I encourage everyone to experience it for themselves.

Wondering who this movie is perfect for? If you have a partner who loves sci-fi but is skeptical about romance films, this is the one to watch together. They might even leave the theater saying, "It was actually quite good, I genuinely enjoyed it." It's a gentle reminder that the essence of romance is still very much alive.

I watched this because it was on a New York Times list of 5 science fiction movies to stream and all I absorbed was an interesting plot of what happens to a relationship between a man and a woman lost in space when they return to their mates on Earth. Because I didn't realize I was walking into a so-called comedy, I was rather taken back at first by what I was viewing. This may be the most cheaply made outer space flick since John Carpenter's Dark Star. However, it is ultimately a rom com which starts off poorly, is never funny, though it is occasionally pleasant and eventually a little sweet. The situation is they have spent three years together lost in space with little hope of ever being found and have developed their own relationship only to find a way to return to Earth and the predictable romantic complications ensue. The two leads, Anthony Mackie and Zoe Chao, offer simple, predictable performances and their actual mates, portrayed blandly by Natalie Morales, who has incredulously become the Governor of her state because she had nothing else to do while Mackie was away, and the ultra-charming Geoff Stults as Chao's hubby are as generic as the leads. The entire production is so low budget nothing rings authentic. How this wasn't made for the Lifetime network beats me.
