Take it or leave it? LEAVE IT!

So as it seems, already people agreed that there's nothing new here, nothing original, nothing outstanding, even more, you're going to find what you've already seen 1000 times.

Even so, movies like this could be enjoyable, yet, not this one, it's too dull, you have to wait for a loooong time for anything to happen and when it finally does...I don't know, it's dull, it's just dull. Now, a budget of £2,000,000 kinda takes you out of the indie section right? Therefore, you can't say you love it for the fact that is small, made with extra love and people might just find it in their hearts to like it! Only reason to enjoy it is if you're a fan of the director, cause he returned with one guy from his previous movies, so I guess it's safe to say you wanted to take a look further into their careers, you found this little gem, and there you have it, you're satisfied!

As a huge horror fan, I might say,I watched it with my gf, we both got bored, she even left the room, I almost prayed for the movie to end sooner, but it didn't. Therefore, it's all up to you, do as you please, watch it or don't; my opinion --> DON'T! You can do a lot better than this one!

Apt Title

Warning: Spoilers
What's with the recent spate of British urban thriller movies set in and around abandoned inner city tower blocks? In 2012 we've had CITADEL, TOWER BLOCK, ATTACK THE BLOCK and now COMEDOWN.

COMEDOWN is the least creatively accomplished or inventive of the trend so far. It relies on the slasher movie staple of wayward teens targeted by a serial killing maniac. They have to fight for their lives, and you just know that for most of them it's a losing battle.

Audience sympathy is not enhanced by the fact that the teens in question are portrayed as a barely literate group of alcohol-swigging, drug taking hooligans with low IQs, criminal tendencies and repugnant personalities. Their nemesis is equally as unattractive, subhuman and just as unsympathetic, so there's really no one to root for. Rather than hoping for anyone to survive or prevail, I found myself wishing for them to hurry up and get killed so that the film could move more quickly towards its (foregone) conclusion.

If someone has a mind to make this sort of movie, at least have the sense and common decency to attempt some level of character development and provide the audience with some individuals they have a chance of identifying with or emotionally investing in. I can't imagine even the most depraved brain-dead inner city delinquent hoodie scumbag finding anyone in this film in the least way appealing. What chance, then, have the rest of us got? It looks cheap – probably because it is – but the tower block itself is well rendered in all its decaying grotesqueness, and some of the death scenes rise just slightly above the mundane whilst still remaining largely uninspired.

Finally, COMEDOWN is probably an apt title. The film feels just like one.

Grey Worm fights a hoodie
Leofwine_draca7 April 2015
COMEDOWN is a low rent British horror film set entirely within the confines of a deserted tower block. The gritty realism and the setting made me hope for something along the lines of TOWER BLOCK or ATTACK THE BLOCK, but unfortunately this is nothing like those two (great) movies. Instead it's a cheap slasher, almost entirely devoid of imagination.

Headlining the cast is Jacob Anderson, best known to audiences for his role as Grey Worm in GAME OF THRONES. Anderson and his buddies, including a pregnant girlfriend and an obnoxious type (Adam Deacon, playing firmly to type) hole up in a run-down building to help run a pirate radio station, but their drug-fuelled highs come crashing down when a killer starts picking them off one by one.

COMEDOWN must feature one of the least menacing bad guys ever, and when you learn of his motivations you'll laugh out loud, they're that slim. The kills, which are what most horror fans will watch this for, are relatively tame, and there just isn't much in the way of suspense built along the way. It doesn't help that the dialogue is moronic throughout and that every twist in the script is well-choreographed. Add in some quite terrible cinematography, meaning 95% of this takes place in near blackness, and you have a quite unworthy film.

Menhaj Huda Does It Again ...
Theo Robertson23 November 2014
... Makes another deeply unpleasant film that borders on being unwatchable

Yes the director of KIDULTHOOD is back and this time he tries his hand at horror in an inner London setting . This type of horror has been done before in ATTACK THE BLOCK , a film I personally despised because the anti-heroic protagonists deserved to get eaten by alien hordes . This film is no different and is a film I despise for the same reason as ATTACK THE BLOCK

If you're going to have a film where the protagonists are going to be fighting for their lives at least craft some type of characterization that will have the audience empathize with their predicament . Here I didn't know anything about the villain in the background stalking the teenagers . All I knew was that he was probably doing the gene pool a massive favour

Some commentators have criticised the " Estuary English / chav speak " dialogue but if we had the Royal Shakespeare Company speaking in pedantic Queens English this wouldn't have made any difference because most of the dialogue is downed out in a poor sound mix with some very dire muzak on the soundtrack just to remind the audience that this is a horror film

In summary this is one of those films that will alienate and outrage everyone from the most rabidly right wing reader of The Daily Mail to the most left leaning Guardinista . When you're watching a horror film and the most likable character is the villain that must be seen as a fundamental failure

Come Down From Your Pedestal
IcyTones11 July 2020
Some people just need to get off their high horse. This is a new generation of good British Drama. It's the emergence of a younger generation cultivating their own language, therefore the dialect is true to type of certain communities. Traditionalists are in denial that this section of society exists, and that their language has found its way into the movies.

The movie hosts a mix of teen crime, mischievous behaviour, youth cult and culture. It's the result of all growing up in a Tower Block in the same area, where the likelihood is that they all attended the same schools and went through the UK schooling system, and gang warfare - but these were not gangs - these were just a group of friends with 'attitude'.

Take it or Leave it

Comedown is a horror movie filmed in the UK about a group of teens who go into an abandoned apartment tower and end up being terrorized by a killer. The film starts out pretty slow. It takes about 30 minutes for something to finally happen, which seems to be consistent with most of the horrors I've watched in the past few weeks. As much as I love movies and television that comes from the UK, sometimes the accents are really hard to understand. This is one of those movies. Although Comedown takes a while to get going, it gets better, but not by much. It's your basic "trapped in a place while a killer as he picks off all the characters, one by one" type of films. Some of the killings are pretty good, but it still falls pretty short of originality. I did appreciate the scene where one of the girls fights back really hard, that was probably my favorite scene, although it was pretty short. I would say that Comedown is a "take it or leave it," type thriller/horror. Overall, it's just OK.

what you looking at fam?.....
FlashCallahan11 April 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Six friends break into the tower block they lived in as kids, now deserted and condemned, to rig up a pirate radio station, and party.

When one of the group goes missing, her friends begin to search the dark interior of the tower and soon realise that they are not alone.

A resident psychopath lurks in the shadows and is hunting them down, taking them out, one-by-one....

What sounds like a good idea, is ruined by the awful script, and the equally awful dialect that the characters spout out every other minute.

There are so many troupes in this film, guy comes out of jail to do right, friends try and turn him back to the criminal ways he had, and the friend who is a bit mental, but really weak.

The cast are good, Deacon plays the same character he does in every other film, and it all ends up a bit Kidulthood meets I Know What You Did Last Summer.

It's intense in parts, the initial set up is great, but when the main protagonist is vexed because of pigeons, you know you cannot take this film seriously.

The action literally takes place on on corridor, and we are treated to scenes of the villain in his torture chamber, playing with his victims, another cliché in this type of genre.

deacon is the most vile character, hence he gets the most intense death scene.

The ending is too obvious, the boy who wants to change gets implied in the killings, and we are treated to a final scene with the killer...sequel time? This time, I very much doubt it.

It's okay, but nothing worth writing home about.

Could have been so much more.
Tucch19 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This is a below par British horror film, that could have been a surprise hit.

I'm just gonna list the things I felt were wrong with the film...

Some of the actors were weak as hell, some over acting, some under acting. Made me feel asif there was a good chance that I myself could go out tomorrow and get an acting job, they were sometimes that bad.

The characters never really felt asif they clicked, I didn't understand the relationships between them so they didn't mix well, plus none of the characters were really drawn out well on their own so you just have to take the stereotype list out in order to understand them...

1) Weak white boy pyromaniac

2) Mouthy over the top mixed race guy

3) Pregnant girl

4) Sketty girl

5) Big stupid, soft at heart guy

6) Just left prison guy, getting himself in order

Literally nobody in this movie grows, or surpasses the stereotype that their characters are written as. This is something I'd be willing to forgive if the horror was there but they mess that up too.

Nothing in this movie is actually scary, except the reality check at the ending which did surprise me, they could have went down other roads, but they didn't. So I'm glad to see abit of originality where the ending was concerned.

Geoff Bell... Having Geoff Bell in the movie as the bad guy and keeping him hooded up for 90 percent of the movie barely speaking a line of dialogue is a sin on its own, if you've seen Geoff Bell in 'The Business' than I'm sure you know what he's capable of, unfortunately in this film it's asif he doesn't even exist.

Man what more is there to say, Imagine a scene where the elevator door opens, and theres the bad guy standing at the end of the hall way, drapped in darkness, running towards the lift at full speed as the kids are desperately hammering at the buttons, trying to get the doors to close, that's horror, there was nothing of the sort in this movie.

Also where was the comedy too? I like Adam Deacon but his mad ramblings were doing nothing for me here. I pictured a scene where he screams, and everyone runs to him like "what's wrong" and he's just screaming cause he's got a bit of dirt on his new trainers, stuff like that was not crafted for this movie.

Plus all of them supposedly used to live in the tower, and there wasn't even a scene crafted where one of them is in a flat that they grew up in, maybe it would have been a good scene to include a flashback, of them as children, to break up the movie a bit, maybe it would have involved the main guy and Adam Deacons character making friends again and teaming together, seeing as they were mortal enemies with no sign of ever being friends throughout the whole movie.

Where was the drug effects throughout the film, they disappeared as soon as the drugs went, also, nobody's phone worked when the radio signal was up (stupid anyway) but nobody's phone worked after it was broke either, it's the only tower in London that can't carry a damn phone signal, why couldn't they at least all have left their phones on the table and when they returned to the room, they was all gone, to explain for the fact that they can't call out for help, maybe a scene where they had to retrieve a phone from the dead 554 guy could have been added.

Urgh I could go on and on and on, I'm gonna have to stop, could have been a classic 8/10 movie, ended up in the trash pile.

3/10 (I'm being generous)

The glass is half-empty.
rushknight16 March 2013
Warning: Spoilers
***May contain lite spoilers***

This film is quite good. I enjoyed it through and through, and thought that the acting was really quite remarkable for a movie of this sort. If you like slasher-themed horror flicks, this one is a must see.

The film itself is well thought out. The plot is realistic, the characters are very believable, even the slasher, and the setting is absolutely appropriate. All in all every tool necessary to make a good slasher film was there right from the beginning. ALMOST everything ties together seamlessly, with only one or two loose threads making me slap my head and say, "Why?"

Even when the killing starts, the characters make practical decisions like, "Everyone stays together," and "If we don't get someone out of the building to find help, we're all screwed." I like to see these sorts of things in horror films, because this is how people would react in real life.

Unfortunately, after about half the film, things change somewhat. The originality wears off and is replaced by the usual timeless horror movie clichés. For instance, one character runs away from the others for no good reason (what happened to sticking together?), the deaths occur in a predictable fashion, purely by order of character importance. You can literally point to who dies next. The atmosphere throughout the film is dark and brooding, even when the actors are having a "party", badly done computer effects when a few fake blood packets would have served better and would've been cheaper, and lastly, the ending is really just nothing new and has been done before in several other movies.

Still, it was well done overall. I would be happy to see a sequel.

lukem-5276010 March 2021
A grimy & gritty low-budget London based urban slasher where a bunch of vile street rats get killed off one by one in a rundown abandoned Block of flats & it's a pretty bad film because the gang are vile & the type in real life you want to get killed off!!!

An all British urban version of an American Slasher & here i rooted for the KILLER!!!!

Brilliantly crafted dark slasher horror film
robertemerald21 February 2020
OK, I get why this Comedown only rated a 4.6 here at IMDb, as it is true it's a stock premise, that is, teenagers somehow exposed getting hunted down one by one in the tradition of numerous other slasher flicks. I'm giving it a 10. Comedown is a truly excellent slasher flik. The psychopath is truly creepy, and chillingly prepared for his night of slaughter, and the Director's handling of how he is introduced carefully scene by scene is a championship of editing. The murders are brilliant, each one carefully choreographed, with great shock value. Some classic horror images here. The tension is palpable. Even before the kids are in danger the delicate dynamics of their social wiles just kind of screams 'this is trouble'. It was a great way to lead in. The actors are all accomplished. The characters themselves are not easy to enjoy, but they are very authentic, helped along by a jabbing script. Then there is the grand set itself, with the lighting and texture throughout being powerful. The sense of danger is just screaming off the walls. This movie has all the heart pounding guts of a really, really outrageous dare, and I loved every minute.

Why did I enjoy this?
bowmanblue25 January 2015
I watch a lot of horror/slasher films and most of them I get about half way through before I turn off. Comedown had absolutely nothing new to add to the genre and the characters were pretty unlikeable, yet I found I managed to sit through the whole thing without actually turning it off.

A bunch of pretty horrible teenagers break into a condemned London tower block in order to set up a pirate radio station. However, there's the obligatory psycho happens to already be living there. And, unsurprisingly, he doesn't take too kindly to their intrusion. What follows is the typical 'hunt 'em and kill 'em' scenario.

Although the killer looks like he's already starred in I Know What You Did Last Summer, he's played by Geoff Bell, an actor who always puts in a good performance (even if he does only just squeak in this case!). The rest of the cast are basically 'killer-fodder.' You won't find yourself shedding too many tears when they start getting hacked to death. One girl is pregnant and her boyfriend is a reformed convict, so I think we're supposed to root for them. Jessica Barden, who plays a particularly 'chavvy' young lady, actually puts in a pretty good performance.

There's nothing new here and what little budget the film had seems to have been wasted on using computers to add extra blood in. Personally, I'd rather they'd have simply squirted a couple of bottles of tomato ketchup here and there, as the computer effects look a little bit too fake.

Like I say, nothing too new here, but strangely watchable and quite good fun in its genre.

Bad premise...
griffiths-brent14 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
A more appropriate description would be "six druggie street kids, including one just out of prison, break into a man's home, destroy his property then torture and murder his pets along with their unborn offspring get what they deserve". The saddest part is that they didn't all die.

It's pretty hard to feel sorry for these kids since they're all garbage human beings. This movie completely failed at getting us to care for the protagonists. In fact, I actually cheered for the "psychopath" to kill them all. Not scary. Not thrilling. Just aggravating.

Not a very good movie
angelowhite-1631821 March 2021
I would like to start by saying the only reason this movie made it to 3 stars, is solely because it has Jessica Barden. I actually enjoyed the acting and setting in this movie, everything else pretty much missed the mark. I want to say the directing in this movie wasn't good. It seemed fairly predictable and not very suspenseful. I feel like I already knew what was going to happen before it happened. The story had potential but lacked so much detail that it was hard to understand why things were happening. I think it is worth the watch, but only if it's out of boredom, not to entertain.

I Haven't Seen a Lot of Movies But This Might be my Least Favorite
meaningbird25 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I hate this movie this movie frustrates me I'm going to start with one of my biggest complaints I don't like them not only are most of them annoying but there all incredibly stupid which leads to them being even more annoying. The only reason this movie isn't 5 minutes long is because of many stupid acts getting them here the main reason this movie happens is someone lights a dudes pet pigeons on fire so he kills them all for killing his pigeons but anyways back to the characters.

Jason is by far the most annoying thing in this movie he is awful to his friends he even spiked his friends drink the friend that literally just got out of jail recently and he dies in an unpleasant way that way being shot to death by nail gun which something else I would like to point out is what I watched it on said it was 13+ but it was way more violent than that and while I'm not squeamish that death was unpleasant to watch and I wish I knew it was that messed up so I could be prepared for that because it was an unpleasant surprise.

Kelly was a tolerable character annoying to listen to but tolerable her death was fine she got pushed down this tube thing and died but although I'm not sure she wouldn't have gotten caught not long after she hid there she leaves and then she gets thrown down that thing.

Jemma is also tolerable she doesn't do much in the movie but you know those stupid decisions I was talking about she went into an abandoned building while pregnant she then eventually gets caught and a long time later gets saved which makes it even harder to get out because there also trapped in by the killer she is one of three people in that building that lives but the worst part of this character is the missed opportunity she is 3 months pregnant and it has no effect on the story if I remember correct.

Gal is the arsonist he likes fire and burned the pigeons and the way he died is probably what you expected he was burned to death which causes the building to start burning overall he's tolerable the only thing he did was kill those pigeons but something I forgot to mention earlier is these characters hate pigeons so much Jason calls them flying rats and hits some of their eggs out of his friends who he is really mean to.

Col is that friend Jason is really mean to he is the one likable character in this movie helping Lloyd find Jemma and sacrificing himself to help them he died from being thrown off the building by the killer and gets impaled on a pole. Lloyd is the dude with a pregnant girlfriend he is one of the three survivors and in the end the police presume he's the killer this all happens the same day or a bit after he just got out of prison.

The Killer kills most of the people for killing his pigeons he is the third survivor in this movie.

There were a few other characters that aren't really worth mentioning that I wouldn't be able to mention because I forget what there names were. Something that is not important that I would like to mention is the first time we see the killers face they angle the camera in a way that makes his face look as wrinkly as Deadpool's face I'm not sure if this if a failure or impressive. One death I didn't mention from earlier was one of those two dudes I don't remember the name of and therefore didn't write them down earlier in my review in near a door and a knife gets stabbed through the door and through his throat and it looks so fake and then it cuts to the side of his head and we see the knife leave his throat and although I'm not sure why I don't like that death scene.

Something important to mention that I haven't yet is all of these characters except one drink alcohol and use drugs whether they know they did or not. I feel like I should mention one of the very few good parts of this movie the inside of the building looks abandoned which helps the atmosphere which is also not bad doesn't fix the fact that the movie is a bit boring, frustrating, and the fact that most things in it are quite unpleasant but it helps. Overall this movie sucks don't watch it 1/10 or if I was giving it a letter grade I would give it a F. I Haven't Seen a Lot of Movies But This Might Be My Least Favorite.

IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE A PARTY
nogodnomasters6 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This film starts out as a British gang movie and half way through suddenly becomes a slasher film.

A group of young adults agree to place a broadcasting antenna for a pirate radio broadcast (they still do that with the Internet?) on top of Mercy Point, an abandoned apartment building taken over by rats and pigeons. They also decide to party with mind altering drugs. When the expecting Jemma (Sophie Stuckey) goes missing, her boyfriend Lloyd (Jacob Anderson) leads a search party with the expected knife/ nail gun slasher film results.

I watched the film not realizing the slasher aspect, which made it a surprise for me and slightly more enjoyable. The film description gives this aspect away. I liked the setting and set up, although the slasher had no personality. There appears to have been some connection between the slasher and Jemma, although that was not known or developed. Likewise, we know nothing about the slasher until the end. It seems they set this film up for a sequel which will add interesting and intriguing aspects they opted to leave out of this one.

Parental Guide: F-bomb. No sex or nudity.

Not Bad, but We Get it, "Fam".
I really do like this film, and yes it has a bit of an original story. The fact that we don't see background on the main characters was an excellent touch since usually every damned movie out there has that background story that isn't a;ways necessary to consider a film a success. The pigeon thing was also an excellent touch since it was a new idea that hasn't been used before.

Now, here is the downside to the film-- the overplayed slang that became famous in 2012, "Fam". Yes we know it's a abbreviation for the word "Family" and is not the first film to use the slang word of the year to relate to the audience, but in this film it is WAY overused which quickly bordered on annoying. Now, for the rest of my criticism, I am going to rag on the guy who ruined the movie in every scene he was in whether he opened his mouth or not; Jason.

Jason is the self appointed leader of the group and is extremely childish and annoying. Not to mention selfish. Lloyd, whom he considers his best friend, is trying to straighten out his life because he has a child on the way and is putting priorities above Jason. I completely commend his decisions because he doesn't want to be locked up and not able to help raise his child. He stopped doing drugs and drinking heavily and definitely was putting his beloved girlfriend as well as his aforementioned unborn child first. Jason was not having ANY of that.

Jason doesn't like being told no, whether he wants to do something or wants someone else to do something. So what does he do when Lloyd honors his deal with their drug dealer by hooking up the aerial and then deciding to take Jemma home? Jason spikes his "Best Friend's" drink with pills because he didn't want him to leave. Well, I'm sorry Jason but the world doesn't revolve around you, "Fam".

He is also abusive towards Colin which is definitely uncalled for. Jason may be the self appointed leader but he is extremely annoying and gave the film the only unenjoyable moments.

All in all, aside from Jason, this film was original and very well made. I recommend it for anyone who decided to look for something different.

excellent scary film
elapenna25 February 2013
I loved this film, I usually don't like horror films but this one blew me away. The acting is fantastic especially from Adam Deacon. I was impressed with Menhaj Huda's transition into horror films what a brilliant director he is. The film has some suspense and some really scary moments that come when you least expect them. The atmosphere created by the direction and cast is really powerful and keeps you engaged, thinking what is going to happen next... I would recommend seeing this film with a group of friends when you are in the mood for some serious horror action. The shots of London are very impressive as is the music that subtly draws you into the story.

Excellent horror - very tense and very real - with a decent plot
tinie-talon18 March 2013
I loved this film. It was a very tense and very real horror. I was hooked from begin to end. The death scenes were great and very realistic for a change. I was actually interested by the characters, which in most horrors I'm not. I didn't expect to care about a group of hoodies but in the end you do. I felt that Jacob Anderson (Lloyd) and Jesscia Barden (Kelly) shone through as two very strong young actors. The setting was very atmospheric and grim. The sound and music also added a great deal and really heightened the tension throughout the film. I'd be keen to see if they are making a sequel as the film leaves you wanting more. 10 stars

I think some people missed bits
welshone-173392 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I wasn't even watching that closely but it seems like I'm the only one reviewing who realised it wasn't just about the pigeons? They literally admitted to terrorising the guy as kids, then the last straw was murdering all his pigeons (and from the look of the burns on Grady's face, he was in the fire too).

Now, as others have said, the characters are absolutely not likeable. Lloyd maybe gets a little pass because it seems like he's maturing. And poor Col. But honestly, that kinda works to the film's advantage. When it's the nice kids getting murdered, people have sympathy. But what if it's the bad kids? This could have been a huge moral tale, delving into the backstories of these kids and pointing out how the system is so broken it shaped them into these little terrors. But it doesn't. We get barely any backstory at all, we know they lived in the tower block, we know Grady was the caretaker. We don't know why the building is now derelict, we don't know why Grady stayed. But we don't need to know.

The ending is set out from the start, no surprises with the false accusation. If you want a happy ending, pretend that Grady gets caught in the process of trying to kill Jemma and her newborn, exonerating Lloyd and allowing them to live happily ever after. But the ambiguity works for me.

The deaths were gruesome enough. The characters at least try to escape and find every attempt thwarted. It's not like you spend the whole movie yelling at the screen because they're doing something stupid.

All in all, I liked the movie. Maybe it's a basic premise but I thought it was well-crafted, and since I live in an area surrounded by chavs... well, it wasn't far-fetched.
