easy watch
backworld3 August 2021
I just finished season 1- it was good..not exciting, but good. You have to remember this is from the UK & they have a different take on cop shows & the amount of blood & violence- not like in the US.

This is just easy to watch, the stories are all different & things get wrapped up with each episode- you don't have to be rivited to the screen to follow the story line.

I found this series on Acorn-which is a UK produced subscription. I find lots of good things on the Acorn service.

Not bad....but not great

I finished season 1 and am in the middle of season 2. It's not the most exciting police procedural show I've seen and it is a bit cliched at times with some of the writing. I don't particulary like the character of MJ. She is bossy and sometimes a little impatient to everyone and her family melodrama is not particularly interesting. The woman who plays her "missing" but found sister is just awful. I like the characters of Jason and Amy though, which is why I gave it 6 stars.

Nicely written, easy watch

I just found this series, and I think it's delightful. The writing is good, as is the acting; there are several well known actors in it. The plots aren't complicated, but that's just what I need sometimes. The episodes are 45 minutes long, and the cases are wrapped up in each episode, perfect for some "comfort TV". By no means is this series "horrible" as one previous reviewer wrote. It's also nice that the lead actress isn't a beautiful young Hollywood type, but rather a real person; this is something I like about British series.

Possibly the worst TV cop drama ever.

Poor Pauline Quirk having to work with this lot. Scripting was unnatural and awkward, the guy from The Bill (Wingett) needed to tone his overacting down about 60%, I had trouble remembering they were supposed to be police officers - the younger cast members were like work experience students. Just awful.

Don't waste your time!

Ahhh, where to begin . . . The dreary characters? The uninspired story lines?

The three main characters are DS "MJ" Croft, DC Jason Doyle, and civilian Amy Garnett, all working in the Dover missing persons unit. MJ? Think Vera, but without the depth. Jason? Self-involved and incompetent, with the tact of a petulent 10-year old - and he NEVER gets any better. Finally, Amy - bright and attractive, she'd be the one highlight in the missing persons office . . . If it weren't for her penchant for office romances! Then there's the evil-tempered DCI, who shows up a few episodes in - can't have a British police procedural without the office politics! She adds NOTHING to the show. And, finally, when you're thinking it can't get any worse (and wondering why you've wasted so much time on this rubbish), they bring in arrogant DC Josh Kemplin for the final three episodes, making them all but unbearable to watch.

The one bright spot in all of this is Mark Wingett as radio show host Danny Hayworth. He steals every scene he's in and is delightful throughout.

Unfortunately, he's not enough to save the show - thank goodness the producers finally had the good sense to pull the plug. If you looking for a series about a British missing persons unit that's actually worth watching, try "Chasing Shadows," with Reece Shearsmith and Alex Kingston - engaging characters and exciting storylines. But good luck finding it - it was on both Britbox and Amazon, but now is nowhere to be found.

Peurile rubbish
mark-newman-128 March 2010
I suffered the indignity of the first episode of this latest 10 part soap opera and in doing so watched every tired cliché retread in the book. If you have run out of lines in a police drama then just insert "I'll get uniform on to it!" or " Uniform are on it, ma'am!" or better still "I thought uniform was dealing with that!" The ma'am in question doesn't get on with her boss, she doesn't know if she'll make important family gatherings because she's got a big case on, A chap is sulking 'cos his dad doesn't understand him being gay, an office romance is about as interesting as watching a fart dissipate.

Add to that the appalling script and the melodramatic nonsense of the story and you are in for a rough ride.

It's... well, just bloody awful!

horribly written story lines
Cilica5 August 2021
Ah this is a horrible show, dialogue so mixed up and stupid - its like all the characters have a mental disability and cannot communicate. I cannot believe the DCI gets angry at her subordinate for writing important things on the missing board. Nothing makes normal sense when they communicate.. I keep watching to find out how horrible it can get. Well second season got worse.

Warning: Spoilers
Kept waiting and by the end of the second season thinking surely the next episode can't be worse and then it got worse. Amazing they actually solved their cases ...

Neither engaging nor inspiring!
qui_j3 September 2022
This is a poorly written soap opera type police series with dreary characters, simplistic plots and a lead character that looks like someone's Nan. The supporting characters are uninteresting and also uninterested! They add little to the series. It's just a badly done, badly written series that could not last. The episodes do little to draw you in, and it is just a mindless watch that let's your mind drift off. Everything gets wrapped up nicely at the end of each episode, but if the episodes were more interesting, and the characters a bit more developed and with more depth to them, it may have encouraged me to stick with it. As it was, had to bail mid season 1.

Not realistic at all, bad writing all around
tracierusch27 January 2024
The reactions, the methods, the attitudes, the premises, all totally unrealistic. The way the lady in charge handles mispers is exactly opposite of how a real cop would handle things. Heck, it's opposite of how anyone would handle things. Her instincts and methods are just plain ridiculous. She chastises her team for using initiative when they dare to go about looking for people the way police should look! On top of that, the resolutions to each situation are too neat and tidy. Everyone resumes happy families, regardless of the reason for a person going missing....all's well, nothing to see here. It's terrible writing. I'm actually surprised there was a second season. I made it through the first 2 episodes before calling it quits.
