Going to the aquatic park will never be the same again...
paul_haakonsen21 May 2021
Well, if you are familiar with the movies - the mockbusters - that the movie company The Asylum churn out, then you know what you are in for when you sit down to watch "Aquarium of the Dead".

And yeah, "Aquarium of the Dead" was exactly what you would expect from The Asylum, for better or worse. The storyline and the concept here was actually fun enough, but the movie was just not made great by the inferior special effects and CGI. And let's face it, for a movie such as "Aquarium of the Dead", then special effects are a must.

Sure, I was lured in to watching "Aquarium of the Dead" because of the title. And also because I saw that the movie had Vivica A. Fox on the cast list. And when I saw The Asylum on the intro screen, I must admit that my expectations to the movie went right out the window.

Yet, I opted to watch "Aquarium of the Dead" on the odd chance that this was actually one of those rare moments where The Asylum actually churn out something worthwhile watching. However, as it turned out, then "Aquarium of the Dead" wasn't really one such moment.

The movie just settled into a very monotonous pace and it never really got into gear. So the movie experience was rather prolonged and bland. And the terrible CGI effects weren't exactly doing much to sell the movie.

The acting in "Aquarium of the Dead" was pretty much what you would and could expect from a movie such as this, and from a movie made by The Asylum. It is cheesy and campy, sure, but not among the worst of acting performances I have seen.

I managed to sit through the entire ordeal, but I can in all honesty say that I am not going to watch "Aquarium of the Dead" a second time. Nor is it a movie that I would recommend you sit down to watch.

The storyline told in "Aquarium of the Dead" just felt like it was something that director Glenn Miller was making up as they filmed the movie. So I don't really know what writers Marc Gottlieb and Michael Varrati were thinking here when they wrote the script for "Aquarium of the Dead".

But hey, at least "Aquarium of the Dead" offered something that haven't been seen before. I mean reanimated dead starfish, dolphin, walrus, octopus and crocodile. And you might think that would make for a gloriously fun movie. Well, no, not so much actually.

My rating of the 2021 movie "Aquarium of the Dead" lands on a three out of ten stars.

reviewer haakonsen couldnt have said it better...
ops-5253523 May 2021
, just claim that this film is made due to the unfortunate pandemic that hit the aquarium industry in lockdown and financial ruin, which led to the unfortunate making of this mumbo jumbo horror thriller because they had it almost for free admission, cause the aquarium exists, and wouldve been rather expensive background to hire when under normal conditions. So most of all its an unfortunate product smashed into mums meat grinder and out comes stupid acting, senselessly stupid story, and special effects that would impress davinci inside his camera obscura some hundred years ago.

Do not watch is the message from the grumpy old man, and thank you paul for your good analyses.

Terrible even for a supposedly "Silly & Fun" Cheap B-movie
lukem-5276029 June 2021
What a boring & just terrible pointless flick this was.

You hardly see any creature's at all because the budget was obvious ridiculously so low so what was the point in even trying? I mean it's a zombie creature feature but you really only see a few glimpses of really poor flat looking c.g.i creature's & that's it!!!

The actors have to always look shocked or scared to something that we never see lol it's absolutely ridiculous & embarrassing.

I like tons of B-movies & i know they're silly & fun but this wasn't even that.

Horrendous acting, Horrendous fx & Horrendously boring, you basically follow a bunch of terrible actors trying to look scared as they walk around an aquarium & that's about it. Crap.

And I usually like Asylum movies.
andrewbakkers27 October 2021
This schlockbuster was filmed in 6 days and it shows. This one really was pasted together without any thought. Being stuck inside an aquarium and not being able to get out while zombie starfish attack ??? At one stage they are standing at the entrance with only a glass door in the way to freedom. The guy has an axe in his hand and they say they cant get out. I mean... please..... Just so bad....... its not even the acting and writing, the whole situation was silly. Just because an aquarum is closed due to COVID, doesn't mean you can make a movie there...... Give it a miss.......

rounds out the trilogy nicely - Aieeeeee! starfish! run!
davidm-1431 May 2021
This is the 3rd entry in the "zoombies" film trilogy, and the MCU should be rightfully embarrassed.

In each film, the zombie plague occurs, just to animals, however, still leaving humans as the prey. No, the human victims don't seem to come back as zoombies themselves, they get to stay dead.

One thing to bear in mind while watching these 3 films (because, why aren't you doing that?), is that they were made on a shoestring budget. In this one, for instance, i laughed when a couple of characters were stopped by zombified river otters, which were apparently too complicated to animate by the SFX crew, because it cuts to the characters having run away from the otters and saying something like "wow, could you believe that?". I didn't, because i saw none of it on screen. I did appreciate, in this time, that they probably got the aquarium to film in inexpensively because it was likely shot during the pandemic, so there weren't any people visiting at the time. I bet we see a few more movies like this where ingenious film makers took advantage of hiring shooting locales on the cheap.

Other than just taking it all in and appreciating the goofy wonderfulness of these movies (certainly more entertaining than "sharknado"), which gets a little nod in this film because - sharks, it's silly fun, and that's all it needs to be.

A Damp Squib
By-TorX-112 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The film promises undead sea critter larks, but is a tedious voyage. The reason for the undead creature outbreak is very vague (involving a growling reanimated octopus brought back to life by some mystery serum that somehow infects every creature in the aquarium at the same time) and a lot of the zombie fish/otter encounters consist of "Phew, that was close!" moments as little of the action is shown on screen. In other instances a tour guide's bloody injury makeup (inflicted by a poorly rendered CGI spider crab) constantly changes, while the survivors are routinely menaced by a robotic-looking alligator and then a very bizarre undead walrus. Adding to the high-octane drama, two paramedics wander around outside the aquarium. So, the film has no real logic and a very small cast, but then again not every film has zombified starfish on the rampage, and that has to count for something, right? So, if you are a fan of shoddy CGI and inexplicable doings and happenings, then this is the film for you, but 80 minutes sure feels like an eternity.

It turns out you could rent an aquarium cheap during the pandemic
timothyhilditch5 December 2021
Asylum trash, if you don't know Asylum makes bad movies on purpose. This movie is a prime example of this. It tried to be funny bad in a few scenes but failed. The script was written around the locations they could film at or made up on the spot. Cheaper the better, anything is acceptable. This movie doesn't do anything good making it a bore. Finding a hole in the plot is easy. Please make some effort.

This movie has to be a joke
jahsyrahamilton12 June 2021
Literally first scene and I already knew it would be bad I actually knew it would be bad because Vivica A. Fox was in it and she only does terrible movies now but anyways the camera work is absolutely terrible the editing makes it look like a school project that would be worth no more than a B- and the shots that they do take are unnecessary and they suck and the acting is beyond horrible it's genuinely laughable how bad it is and the editing oh my lord it is the worst I have seen in a WHILE I can't believe movies like this get made all of the actors should find a new career and the camera man should sell all his equipment. This review probably seems like it's from some hater who has done nothing with their life and just sits on their butt but no I am a teenage fit model who goes to an arts school so I know what good film is and this is NOT IT.

Asylum projects never meant to be serious. It is just mindless action and fun. Bad acting, sounds and CGI. But this is what I am looking for every time I see the Asylum logo. Perfect. Loved it.

Average Asylum
bitbucketchip9 November 2021
There are a few attempts at humor here, but the writing never reaches the lofty heights of the first Sharknado. Clearly that was the goal here. Still, the humor helps make what is otherwise a dull slog watchable, at least most of the time. I personally wouldn't trust The Asylum to do anything right, but someone granted them access to an actual aquarium stocked with live animals. Some of the behind the scenes shots were interesting in their own right.

The acting is standard Asylum "Attention Walmart shoppers: The Asylum is casting a movie in the parking lot. Parts go to first twenty shoppers to sign up. Attention Walmart shoppers..." With the exception of the short-haired blonde scientist. Words cannot describe her performance. They coukd make a film about how she appeared in front of the camera yet never realized she was supposed to be acting.

Speaking of camera, the camera work was uncommonly good for an Asylum effort. There were times you could almost follow the action. Almost. There's the usual special effects paid for with free pizza, dearth of appropriate background music, bizarrely disjointed foley work, and dialog that would be improved by having five year olds ad lib instead.

Half a star compared to professionally made films. For an Asylum film half a star is five stars. Average. Five stars.

Avoid this at any cost. They should actually pay you to watch this movie. Lame vfx, even gta looks more realistic than the creatures they used in the movie.

VIEWS ON FILM review of Aquarium of the Dead
burlesonjesse519 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
How bad is 2021's Aquarium of the Dead? Let me put it this way, how bad was smallpox (pretty bad I'm thinking). "Aquarium" is billed as a zombie movie for sea creatures (check the title, duh). Somewhere the late George Romero is rolling in his grave, rolling like dough.

Aquarium of the Dead makes me wonder why Showtime would ever "show" it on their network. This is more like Syfy channel stuff and that's being generous. The special effects in "Aquarium" are an abomination, shown in green screen greenery and seen in tidbits because they are half-arsed. There's no George Lucas magic here, just continuous shots of a huge alligator and an octopus. I mean you could play a drinking game as to how much filler there is with these ersatz mammals.

Aquarium of the Dead tops out at 86 minutes hence the almost minimal build-up. The aquarium that the characters are trapped in is on lockdown so everybody wanders aimlessly. They say "we gotta go here" or "we gotta go there" but end up backtracking. I mean what is this, the town where The Blair Witch Project went down (ridiculous)?

The acting in "Aquarium" is no prize either as everyone bickers and explains everything with bad sci-fi, psychobabble dialogue. Oh and there's comic relief too, the kind that makes you want to squirm. Every actor in "Aquarium" is unknown expect for one Vivica A. Fox. I was expecting Fox to say something like, "son, you picked the wrong aquarium" but to no avail. Instead she lets out the most fake scream in the history of cinema. Ugh.

If I had my druthers, everyone on the set of Aquarium of the Dead would've been fired right before post-production. That includes the director (the first fall guy), the editor ("we gotta go now" or "we gotta move" could be another drinking game), and the makeup artist (which is kinda connected to the vacancy of the editor). Aquarium of the Dead is a "dead" horse or should I say, dead walrus.

Aquarium Of The Bore More Like
vengeance207 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Thought this might be good, but also thought this might suck so I gave it watch cause I thought it could be good... it wasn't...

The film follows an Aquarium that goes into lockdown when a virus brings back to life the dead sea creatures. With the crew trapped & the threat of the virus spreading, they must stop it & escape before it's too late.

I found the film to be pretty boring mostly. Some ok vissuals but some really crappy non gory deaths that insued. Despite being only 80 minutes long, the pacing was off & felt like a chore to get through. The characters were annoying, bland or dumb. The ending was annoying & just plain embarassing. The story itself was dull & boring.

Overall, it's a bore & you're not missing much, if not a thing.

2/10.

Terribly Entertaining!
icocleric15 June 2022
It's not a "good film" by the traditional sense, but if you are a fan of bad films, and creature features. This is exactly the kind of dumb film I enjoy. I can see how it's not for everyone, but if you are used to Asylum films, you know what you are in for. It is one of the Asylum films I have found more entertaining. Not as good as Sharknado, but you can see its the same people behind it.

The characters are really fun. The situations are ridiculous, but I was there for it. It's not scary by any means, but it had me in stitches. I also like how the issues are down to people being greedy and cutting corners.

This film knew what kind of film it wanted to be, and went for it unapologetically.

The single worst film ever made
davidmartin-6737126 November 2022
I lack the ability to fully articulate quite how bad this film is. I'm actually really impressed by the level of sheer stupidity and relentless nonsense that this exhibits. The bad acting and terrible cgi are nothing compared to moronic plot, contrived story and overall bull of this film. I lament having to write another 300 characters to inform you have bad this film is. My good friends Matt and Olly are gifted by falling asleep half way through. I however will be forever scared by watching the whole thing. If it wasn't for for Glen stroking my head throughout I might have ended my life just to avoid this mind numbing hell.
