The Detroit Film Critics Society (Dfcs) is pleased to announce the Best Of 2020 nominees and winners in thirteen categories. This year, due to the pandemic, the period for which a film could be released was extended through February 28, 2021. Also included this year, and not in the past, are films that streamed because they could not be theatrically released. The Dfcs was founded in Spring 2007 and consists of a group of eighteen film critics from Michigan who write or broadcast in the metro-Detroit area as well as other major cities including Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids and Toledo, Ohio.
Each critic submitted their top 5 picks in the following categories: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Ensemble, and Breakthrough in any category, Best Original Screenplay, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Documentary, Best Animated Feature, and Best Use of Music/Sound. Female-led stories across film and television dominated the Aacta International Awards, with Promising Young Woman, Nomadland, and The Queen’s Gambit leading the winners.
There was also some joy for Australia in the television categories, with three-time AFI Aacta Award nominee Aaron Pedersen marking his first Aacta Award win for his role as detective Jay Swan in Australian outback drama, Mystery Road.
Emerald Fennell’s Promising Young Woman – produced by Margot Robbie and her production house, LuckyChap Entertainment – took out the Award for Best Film, beating out The Father, Minari, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and Nomadland.
The story, which tackles the dismantling of toxic masculinity, also received a Best Lead Actress in Film award for Carey Mulligan’s performance.
Robbie considered playing the lead herself as she has done with other LuckyChap projects but realised there was a less obvious choice for the protagonist.

In his Best Supporting Actor Oscar speech for “Bridge of Spies” (2015), Mark Rylance quoted his signature line in the film to give a shout-out to Tom Hanks. “I think if you ever wondered about acting with Tom Hanks, ‘Would it help?’, the answer’s clearly yes,” Rylance quipped, holding up his new statuette to the camera.
Rylance is not the only person Hanks, America’s Dad, has helped get some Oscar love. While Hanks had a 19-year nomination drought with the academy, broken last year with his supporting actor bid for “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” many of his supporting co-stars over the past three decades have gotten the patented Tom Hanks Bump, scoring Oscar nominations without him shortlisted in Best Actor. And now his “News of the World” co-star Helena Zengel looks on course to do the same.

“I spent months in the jungle just walking around and trying to figure out where the scenes were going to take place,” remembers production designer Wynn Thomas about prepping for “Da 5 Bloods.” The film tells the story of Black Vietnam War vets returning to the country to recover the remains of their fallen squad leader as well as a hidden stash of gold. It was shot in Vietnam and Thailand, which presented a number of unique visual and logistical challenges. Watch our exclusive video interview with Thomas above.
This is far from Thomas’ first film with director Spike Lee. They’ve been working together going all the way back to “She’s Gotta Have It” (1986). But this was Thomas’ first time working on a war movie overseas with the filmmaker. “Much of the movie takes place in the jungle, so part of my design challenge was how to chart that...
