Thought Provoking!
natetate345 July 2013
It's a great thought provoking short film. In a culture where all you see is one thing and a lot of look a likes,it is sometimes hard to be different and set yourself apart. He not only made a choice for himself, but for his family. We need more films like this and look forward to seeing more of what this great mind has to offer. Hopefully one day in the future I will have the opportunity to work with Ryan. Keep making thought provoking films that will change peoples lives. Never allow anyone to cause you compromise your vision and just keep doing what you are doing. Your humility and character will take you further than you ever imagined.

Meh.

I don't understand why suddenly everyone talks about this as a masterpiece, or says it's "wonderfully moving" or "thought provoking". My dear God. It's a short movie from a film school student who happened to become a successful Hollywood director. But that's not a valid reason to overrate this, that remains a mediocre work without any particular deep meaning or artistic value. The story is nice but very far from original. The cinematography is amateurish. I don't want to be that guy, I just hate when people ride the wave and overrate the s**t out of stuff. With 10 minutes on Google you can find shorts hundreds of times better than this one in every single aspect, but they're mostly unknown because the guys who made them didn't become famous. Period.

Simple story, not too interesting

Warning: Spoilers
"Locks" is a 6-minute short film from 6 years ago written and directed by Ryan Coogler. He is one of the fastest rising filmmakers right now, especially in terms of African Americans, and shot this little movie in his early 20s. We see a man walk through the streets and he has dreadlocks like many people he sees, the ones who struggle with police, a mother with her girl etc. Then he enters a barber shop and shortly afterward the locks are gone. In the end, we find out why he got rid off them. I must say the emotional impact intended by Coogler with the ending was not too great. It felt just included for the sake of it instead of telling a really authentic and moving story. And lets be honest, everything before the ending isn't particularly interesting either. I guess with Coogler's reputation now, he must have stepped things up a lot since then as this was really not a great short movie. Thumbs down.
