David Simon is developing a new series at HBO, Variety has learned exclusively.
Simon is attached to write and executive produce the drama project, currently titled “The System.” Lily Thorne and Larissa MacFarquhar will also write and co-executive produce, with Kiese Laymon also attached to write.
The project is based on a series of New Yorker articles written by MacFarquhar. The official description states that the show “will examine the foster care and child protective service systems from the viewpoint of family court judges and lawyers, as well as social workers, caretakers, mothers, and the children themselves, and will probe the risks and benefits of removing children from families of origin.”
Should the project move forward, it would be Simon’s ninth HBO series. He is perhaps best known for his work on the critically-acclaimed series “The Wire,” which aired for five seasons at the premium cabler. He most recently...

Exclusive: Academy Award winner Peter Ramsey (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) and former Overbook head Caleeb Pinkett (Cobra Kai) are set to produce a live-action feature adaptation of The Storm Clan, the comic book created by Dallas Jackson and Joe Casey, which marks the first title from Jackson’s new company DJ Classicz Comix.
Jackson and Casey will pen the script, with former Lionsgate exec Jorge Alfaro to serve as an EP.
A sci-fi action adventure story, The Storm Clan watches as an ex-military weapons engineer trains his five adopted children to be undercover hi-tech/martial-arts thieves wearing an invincible bionic-body armor. Previously orphaned, the teenagers gifted with bionic technology see it provide them with the opportunity to protect themselves from the threats of the streets, also empowering them to take advantage of life instead of being taken advantage of, and most importantly, giving them comfort and sense of belonging within a family.

Order up! “The Bear” has won the Emmy Award for outstanding comedy series for its first season — which debuted all the way back in the summer of 2022.
Actor and chef Matty Matheson was the first to address the crowd, after an onstage kiss from his co-star Ebon Moss-Bachrach, excitedly proclaiming, “I just want to thank restaurants as a whole, hospitality as a whole… I just love restaurants so much!”
“The Bear” star went on, “The good, the bad. It’s rough, we’re all broken inside and every single day we gotta show up and cook and make people feel good by eating something and sitting at a table. And it’s really beautiful and all of us here get to make a show together. And we get to make people feel good or filled with anxiety or triggered… it seems.”
Matheson then thanked the cast and crew, “It’s hard work.

As the aftereffects of the writers’ and actors’ strikes hit streaming in a big way, there’s not a lot of new content to offer subscribers early in 2024. Hulu still has some interesting things to offer in January, though.
The biggest new Hulu Original series in the new year is Death and Other Details, a locked room murder mystery starring Mandy Patinkin as Rufus Cotesworth, who is said to be the world’s greatest detective – at least in this universe. In the new series, Cotesworth comes to the rescue when an unfortunate soul is killed on lavish Mediterranean ocean liner, and he has to team up with the prime suspect (Violett Beane) to solve the crime.
The big Original movie premiere in January is Self Reliance, which follows a middle-aged dude (Jake Johnson) who gets randomly invited into a limo by Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg, and is soon offered...

Since its premiere in 1990, "Law & Order" has become the gold standard of police procedurals. It was by no means the first police procedural, but it is perhaps the most recognizable. True to its genre, each episode of this series features a crime that must be solved by detectives and prosecuted by the District Attorney's office. Although some storylines are original ideas, many take inspiration from high-profile cases, larger-than-life criminals, and current events within the U.S. justice system.
After three decades and counting, fans can enjoy over 400 episodes and 22 seasons of their favorite procedural. It's a massive chunk of television to sift through, but some parts of the series are more worthwhile than others. From unbearable characters to stale plots, the worst seasons of "Law & Order" are full of frustrating departures from the series' tried-and-true formula. However, the best seasons offer viewers a glimpse at just how great procedural television can be,...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Law & Order Season 22 Episode 9, “The System.”] In the Law & Order fall finale, Detective Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) is faced with the fact that the confession he got from a young Black man, Troy Booker (Chaundre Hall-Broomfield), was false — and that is just the beginning of a string of events that lead to a complicated trial. While at the courthouse, Troy, who’d been proclaiming his innocence, escapes and, while fighting with a corrections officer for control of a gun, the weapon goes off. The officer later dies, and Troy is put on trial for his death — but video evidence shows that he was innocent of the crime for which he was originally in prison. But for the officer, he’s found guilty of murder in the second degree. Brooks takes us inside that ending. How does Shaw feel about the verdict at the end? Mehcad Brooks: Ambivalent. I don...

In Thursday night’s episode of “Law & Order,” Mehcad Brooks’ police detective character Jalen Shaw find himself inadvertently perpetuating the racism of the prison system when he learns, too late, that a young male suspect whose confession he’s obtained is actually innocent.

And then the problem is, during his escape, the kid takes a hostage, and things go sideways,” Brooks says of the episode, titled “The System.”

Detective Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) is going to be questioning himself in the Law & Order Season 22 fall finale. In “The System,” airing December 8, a suspect arrested for murder escapes police custody after months of waiting for his day in court. As a hostage situation erupts, Shaw must re-examine his conduct as the arresting officer. Plus, Price (Hugh Dancy) questions his faith in the justice system. Brooks looks ahead to the fall finale. Preview the case. When it begins, how much is he questioning his previous actions? Mehcad Brooks: Shaw got a confession from a kid who appeared to have murdered someone, comes out later that he didn’t, and there’s video evidence to support that. That tears Shaw up inside, but this kid, much like Kalief Browder, he was in Rikers for something he didn’t do, and it was tearing this kid up inside. So I liken...

The storylines in the fifth season of The Crown have provoked much backlash, from scenes showing the former Prince Charles trying to force the Queen’s abdication to others suggesting Prince Philip was unfaithful to the late monarch.
Prominent figures, including Judi Dench, have demanded that the drama carry a disclaimer to make clear that the events of the series aren’t entirely factual. While The Crown actor Jonathan Pryce, has called these reactions to the show “hugely disappointing”, claiming that viewers know it’s a drama, not a documentary.

Warning: contains spoilers for The Crown season 5.
The Crown and historical accuracy enjoy a fleeting rather than steadfast acquaintance. Kim Kardashian shows no signs of slowing down as the reality TV star makes her way to the Big Apple for New York Fashion Week in style.
The mother of four rocked a skintight and sheer dress as she attended the Fendi show.
The glittery gown featured nude-colored paneling, long sleeves, and a turtleneck as the piece from the Fendi 2022 Couture collection touched the ground and hugged Kim’s curves.
The Fendi show was notable because it was in New York instead of the usual location of Milan. The reason for the venue change was to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Fendi Baguette bag.
