There are plenty of good reasons to engage in charity, and a couple bad ones, but none as satisfying as giving out of unmitigated spite. That’s what stand-up comic Doug Stanhope proved earlier this year when he raised $125,760 for Moore, Okla. tornado victim Rebecca Vitsum purely to annoy people. As Stanhope explained this week on Charlie Brooker’s annual Newswipe program, he started the campaign “simply to be a prick to her Okie Christian neighbors” who thanked God instead of charity donors like him....

Black Mirror's series two opener 'Be Right Back' was a compelling mix of light and dark, while last week's 'White Bear' was unremittingly bleak. But with series closer 'The Waldo Moment' being billed as a political satire of sorts, I'd expected a drama infused with moments of dark humour - something akin to series one's brilliant 'The National Anthem'.
Anyone who's seen that memorable episode or indeed an edition of Newswipe knows that Charlie Brooker can be brilliantly scathing about politics, but unfortunately 'The Waldo Moment' fell short of my expectations.
The film follows Jamie Salter (Daniel Rigby), a failed comic in low spirits - his personal life is in tatters and his job - voicing a cartoon bear named Waldo on a political satire series - is deeply unsatisfying.
Waldo's latest target is Tory politician Liam Monroe - brought to slippery life by Tobias Menzies - but what...

Charlie Brooker is one of those UK wonders who hasn't made the jump to American audiences yet, and that is a damn shame. Wildly prolific, Brooker seems to produce about 600 hours of new television every year, shows like "How TV Ruined Your LIfe" and "Them From That Thing" and "10 O'Clock Live" and "Newswipe" and "Screenwipe" and the oh-so-fiendish "Dead Set," and he's the author of the blisteringly funny "Pedophilia" episode of the great "Brass Eye." Brooker is an astute media critic as well as a wicked wit, and that's a combination that I hoped would have made him much...

Frank is an angry man, and one imagines Bobcat Goldthwait, the writer-director of God Bless America, is too. It’s a movie that takes aim at everything he (Frank or Godthwait, you pick) can’t stand in modern culture, and I mean ‘takes aim’ literally. Indeed, one of the things that Frank’s sidekick, Roxy, finds most annoying is people who use the word ‘literally’ when they don’t literally mean it. That goes on the list along with reality talent shows, right-wing political commentators, people who high-five and anyone who describes him or herself as ‘spiritual.’
I can sort of sympathise with that list, although I can also live with it; TV channels can be changed, high-fives are more or less tolerable, and James Joyce began his classic short story “The Dead” with the sentence ‘Lily, the caretaker’s daughter, was literally run off her...

Charlie Brooker’s pack of 3 stand-alone shows has certainly raised eyebrows with its controversial content but has won plaudits both from critics and the viewing public. The final episode aired last night and the series has left many thinking he should be up for some awards come ceremony time. Does he deserve a BAFTA? Many think so, and if he does achieve that recognition it will have been quite a journey for a man who was once known merely as a venomous critic, spitting vitriol over prime time television.
When the big HBO shows were first aired on this side of the pond I excitedly tuned in every Sunday evening to watch these soon-to-be classics. The Sopranos, Deadwood and 6 Feet Under were like nothing I’d seen before. At the same time I was a regular reader of The Guide, the Guardian’s Saturday supplement, in which Charlie Brooker wrote his Screen Burn column.

Roadrunner Comedy is excited to announce that premiere comedian Doug Stanhope will be releasing new live CD/DVD package Oslo: Burning The Bridge To Nowhere on May 3rd, 2011. This is Roadrunner Comedy.s first release.
Recorded in an abandoned factory in the Grünerløkka suburb of Oslo, Norway, the performance is as spontaneous and unhinged as anything Stanhope has ever done. Originally a sewing machine factory converted to a German WWII bunker, the setting forOslo is anything but conventional. Whereas most comedy specials are filmed on an elaborate stage, Stanhope and Nikon Norway filled a dilapidated industrial space with lights and folding chairs, ultimately allowing the material be the focus of this release.
Oslo.s madcap backdrop mimics the process that led to the recording: Bjorn Opsahl, one of Norway.s most notorious photographers, planned only to do a portrait session with Stanhope in Long Beach. The shoot went so well...

Endemol today announced it has entered an exclusive development deal with UK production company Hotsauce TV, owned by one of the UK’s most well known entertainers and talk show hosts, Jonathan Ross. The deal will see Hotsauce TV working exclusively with Endemol in jointly creating and producing entertainment ideas for the UK and international markets. Endemol will also globally distribute programmes and formats that are developed as part of the deal. Ross is also coming back to the BBC. A keen amateur astronomer, he's taking part in the astronomy show Stargazing Live for BBC2 airing in January, BBC TV boss Jana Bennett tells me. Ross was the BBC’s star chat show host until he resigned in January but “the door’s never been shut for Jonathan,” Bennett says. Ross will continue to separately work on his ITV chat show and a number of other presenting projects. Hotsauce TV...

Konnie Huq has been forced to cancel a holiday with her partner Charlie Brooker, because of her new job on The Xtra Factor.
The former children’s TV presenter has been secretly dating the Newswipe star for five months and joked that they had been planning a quickie wedding whilst on holiday in Las Vegas.
A pal told The Sun: “Konnie’s really upset as she was looking forward to getting away with Charlie. But she’s been off the radar for too long and The Xtra Factor was too good an opportunity to turn down.”
The pal added: “She kept joking they were going away to have a shotgun wedding. You never know with those two though – that might be why she was so gutted about cancelling it.”
Konnie begins filming for The Xtra Factor and is reportedly being paid £160,000 for the series, £200,000 less than Holly Willoughby.

London -- John Hurt and Kenneth Branagh will go head to head for the coveted best actor award at this year's BAFTA TV awards, alongside Brendan Gleeson and newcomer David Oyelowo, organizers announced Monday.
The awards, Britain's top television nods, will be handed out June 6 at a star-studded showbiz gala to be held at the Palladium theater in London's West End and broadcast near-live on BBC1.
Branagh is nominated for his performance in the bleak Scandinavian detective series "Wallander," while Hurt is in contention for reprising his portrayal of the flamboyant-yet-vulnerable Englishman Quentin Crisp in ITV's "An Englishman in New York," some 34 years after he won the BAFTA actor award for playing Crisp in "The Naked Civil Servant."
Gleeson portrayed Winston Churchill in an intimate political and domestic portrait of the British wartime Prime Minister "Into the Storm" while Oyelowo was named for his performance in the BBC1 Jamaican immigrant drama "Small Island.
