It was all about mothers at the top of this week’s pre-Mother’s Day Saturday Night Live.
The variety show dispensed with its typical topical cold open for one that featured SNL castmembers sharing moments with their moms.
Kenan Thompson kicked off the show, appearing on the Studio 8H stage with his mom because, he said, “it’s “Mother’s Day in about 29 minutes,” which, she declared, meant there was still “plenty of time to buy a gift.”
“With so many upsetting stories in the world right now, we thought we’d take a break from a regular cold open and hear some heartwarming stories from our moms instead.”
Still Thompson’s mom said she wanted to see who would play Stormy Daniels in a cold open focused on the porn star’s testimony in former President Donald Trump’s criminal trial. That wasn’t the only reference to...

Maya Rudolph opened the Mother’s Day episode of “Saturday Night Live” with a tribute to mothers — in every sense of the term.
Hosting the sketch show’s penultimate episode of the season, Rudolph began her monologue by noting she’s a four-time mom herself. “But Maya, look — you’re not just a mom,” cast member Bowen Yang reminded her. “You’re mother,” invoking the term’s use in queer slang to describe powerful, aspirational women. “You were the first to slay the house down boots, queen!”
“Who me, mother?” Rudolph asked, feigning shock. “You’re right!” The host then launched into a propulsive dance number, strutting through Studio 8H — also known as “House of Rockefeller” — in a reflective bodysuit while delivering lyrics like “Oops, I made you dance / Remember in that movie when I pooped my pants?” Other lines played on the many meanings of “mother”: “Who’s...

When Maya Rudolph steps onto the Studio 8H stage this weekend, it will mark her third time hosting Saturday Night Live. While she’s still got a ways to go before she earns a Five-Timers Club jacket, the Loot star is already part of another SNL fraternity: former cast members who have returned as hosts.
Given that the current season of the sketch comedy series kicked off with Pete Davidson at the helm and has since seen Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig, and now Rudolph return to their old stomping grounds, it would seem like a relatively common occurrence. But of the more than 500 individuals who have hosted the show over the past half-century, only a few dozen of them have ever also called Lorne Michaels “boss.” And it all began with Chevy Chase.
On February 18, 1978, Chase became the first former SNL cast member to return as host.

On this season of Apple TV+’s “Loot,” it’s revealed that one of the show’s characters, played by Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, is a secret Taylor Swift fan — and even hides her Swift albums inside record jackets for jazz music. Don’t worry, star Maya Rudolph isn’t as clandestine. “I’ve always admired her,” Rudolph tells Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast. “This past summer was the summer of the Eras tour and my life will never be the same again. It was incredible.”
Rudolph says Swift’s album “Lover” is her favorite — but then she quickly backtracks. “Now you got me started. When my kids told me about the concert and said you go as your favorite era, I was like, how do I dress as ‘Invisible String?’ Because that’s my favorite song. My kids were like, that’s not an era. That doesn’t count. But it works for me.

Maya Rudolph’s Saturday Night Live hosting gig appears to be a long time in the making. In this week’s promo for the actress’ upcoming episode, the SNL alum emerges from a Studio 8H closet after 17 years in hiding.
SNL castmembers Andrew Dismukes and Chloe Troast find Rudolph in her hiding place, where she sits in a prairie-like outfit and tells them over a bowl of oatmeal, “Oh, hello there! I wasn’t expecting visitors.”
The Loot star goes on to tell the shocked comedians she’s been there since 2007 when she left SNL after seven years as a castmember.
“Why would I leave? I have everything I need here,” she says, pointing to “my books, my porridge, my dear friend Kenny.” The camera then pans to a mop with googly eyes.
When Troast asks, “Aren’t you supposed to be hosting this week?” Rudolph responds, “Oh I am.

The sixth episode of Loot season 2 ended with Sofia and Isaac not breaking up, even though the former assumed their relationship had ended. Meanwhile, Molly was in the hospital after having a bad reaction to a pill given by a fellow model to relax her nerves. The last episode was a reminder of how good the writing for the show had become over the past two years. The next one would be Molly’s feelings for Arthur and how she plans to articulate them.

[This story contains mild spoilers from season two, episode six of Loot.]
Maya Rudolph’s Loot is as much about a woman coming into her own identity post-divorce as it is an office comedy, thanks to the characters at Molly Novak’s (Rudolph) charitable organization, The Wells Foundation.
When Molly, the ex-wife of tech giant John Novak (Adam Scott), puts all of her energy into philanthropic efforts, she eventually forms an unlikely friendship with the no-nonsense executive director of the foundation, Sofia Salinas (Michaela Jaé Rodriguez), and grows closer to her employee cousin Howard (Ron Funches). And she unexpectedly develops feelings for another member of the staff, single dad Arthur (Nat Faxon).
In season two of the Apple TV+ series, the personal lives of these characters come more into view as Sofia reluctantly lets her guard down (and breaks a personal-professional boundary by engaging in a romance with a contractor, played by O-t Fagbenle), and Howard, Arthur and Molly’s assistant...

Before you make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Comedy Supporting Actress, take a look through our photo gallery featuring the ladies most likely to land in the lineup. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Loot Season 2, Episode 4, “Mr. Congeniality.”] Loot’s latest episode welcomed a very special guest star with the appropriately titled installment, “Mr. Congeniality.” Benjamin Bratt stepped in to play a version of himself as Molly (Maya Rudolph) visited a swanky meditation retreat for her mental well-being. Things took a hilariously heated turn as Molly couldn’t hide her attraction to the movie star. Much to Molly’s delight, Bratt expressed an equal interest in her. But how did this amazing guest star appearance even come together? It turns out that there’s a Poker Face connection as Natasha Lyonne, who stars in the Peacock series is an executive producer on Loot and suggested her costar Bratt for the role. Apple TV+ “I mean, you yourself Poker Faced that… Natasha did suggest Benjamin Bratt,” co-creator Alan Yang says with a laugh. “She was like, ‘he’s incredible!’ And she really liked working...

Episode three of Loot season 2 ended with Molly and Nicholas reconciling over a small spat they had. Molly wanted to prove she could survive alone without the staff around her. Nicholas had a hard time connecting with his parents about the life he led in California. Molly realized she does live a life of privilege; she only had to acknowledge it. Nicholas ended up saving from the panic room because they were more like siblings than friends. Nicholas took a first step towards getting to know his parents and took them out for dinner at a local diner.

[This story contains spoilers from season two, episode three of Loot, “Vengeance Falls.”]
In the final minutes of the season one finale of Loot, the show’s protagonist, Molly Novak (played by Maya Rudolph), wakes up with a multi-layered hangover after a night of drinking one too many and welcoming her ex-husband, John Novak (Adam Scott), back into her bed. Yet despite the shocking cliffhanger audiences were left with, the scene in no way foreshadows a future reunion between the couple who divorced after John’s infidelity. Just minutes into the first episode of the second season of the Apple TV+ series, Molly tells John the only thing she wants from him going forward is “space.”
“Listen, there’s no Team Molly-John here, except for John,” Rudolph tells The Hollywood Reporter in the conversation below. “John’s the only one voting for that and he is completely outnumbered, let’s be honest.”

Aziz Ansari cast Keanu Reeves as an angel named Gabriel in his new Lionsgate film Good Fortune, but God apparently wasn’t looking out for Reeves when he tripped on a rug in his trailer.
“About 15 days into shooting with me, I said, ‘Go chill in your trailer,'” Ansari recalled during an appearance at CinemaCon on Wednesday. “He tripped on a rug … Poor guy, he was such a trooper, and he fractured his kneecap and continued to do all the scenes.”
Ansari, appearing opposite Lionsgate’s motion picture group chair Adam Fogelson during the studio’s presentation in front of theater owners, suggested that the accident was even more striking considering that through all his physically demanding work in action pics like the John Wick franchise and Speed, “he never had to go to the hospital or anything.”

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss the top-heavy Best Comedy Actress category.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back to type about comedy — and not the comedy of seeing Tom Ripley try to dodge a runaway motorboat. I’m typing about real comedy… like “The Bear.” Well, Ok, maybe not just “The Bear” since that’s all but assured of winning multiple Emmy Awards in September in a rerun of the 2023 (’24) Emmys we just saw in January. But let’s start there because while we agree with the consensus that the series, Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach should all repeat as Emmy winners this year, we’re both against the current tide in the Best Comedy Actress race. Most experts and users predict...

While most everyday people struggle to get enough money, Maya Rudolph wrestles with giving all of hers away when she returns as Molly Novak in the season two premiere of Loot, now streaming on AppleTV+.
In the season one finale of the comedy, which aired on Aug. 12, 2022, Molly declared plans to give away every penny of her $120 billion divorce settlement from tech tycoon John Novak (Adam Scott) after a publicly embarrassing business blunder. But even with the personnel issues as head of the Wells Foundation behind her — now that she and executive director Sofia Salinas (Michaela Jaé Rodriguez) are on the same page — Molly finds that being a career philanthropist isn’t as easy as it sounds.

Loot on Apple TV+, unlike what the name suggests, is not a heist show. This one is rather an endearing take on a rich woman who is never considered as an emotional person and constantly sidelined for having a lot of money. Created by Alan Yang and Matt Hubbard, the show stars Maya Rudolph as a 45-year-old divorcee struggling with her life and yearning to do something different.
Loot season 1 focused on Molly Novak, the wife of the tech billionaire John Novak. She was seemingly happily married to him until she learned of his infidelity. Molly got a divorce and a hefty alimony, a palatial home in Los Angeles with many helpers at her disposal. Molly, at the age of forty-five, had everything but a life of her own. Hoda and Jenna aired on Wednesday, March 27, but after a bit of time, Hoda Kotb disappeared from the show, requiring someone else to step into the gap. At the time, there was no explanation as to why the Today talk show’s co-host left, but there are a few things that might have needed her attention.
Hoda Kotb & Jenna Bush Hager Got A Stand-In Co-Host
Sometimes, the co-hosts on Today need time for either personal recreation or important reasons. However, if they go away, they often announce it before departure. Actually, Hoda was away recently, taking a nice break. So something else must have popped up. However, she also runs the Making Spaces podcast, and on March 27, she talked on social media about interviewing author Arthur Brooks. So perhaps she left Hoda and Jenna early for that.

Apple TV+ had announced it will expand its award-winning comedy slate with a new 10-episode comedy starring and executive produced by Owen Wilson and created, written by and executive produced by Jason Keller (“Ford v Ferrari”). Apple TV+ is taking a shot at another sports-related comedy.
The streamer behind Ted Lasso has placed a series order for a show starring Owen Wilson as a former pro golfer who needs to get his life back in order. The Loki star will also be an executive producer of the untitled series, which comes from Apple Studios and creator Jason Keller (Ford v. Ferrari).
Wilson will play Pryce Cahill, whose golf career ended prematurely 20 years ago. After he gets fired from his job at a sporting goods store in Indiana and his wife leaves him, Pryce sees a troubled 17-year-old golf phenom as his way back.
The series seems to echo Ted Lasso in its sports-world setting and the possibility of a redemption arc for its main character. It will join a comedy roster at Apple TV+ that also includes Shrinking, Platonic, Loot and the upcoming Palm Royale.
