Rene Auberjonois was originally scheduled to record original lines for the holographic representation of Odo. He passed away before this could happen, so archive audio was used instead.
Writer Aaron Waltke read eighty scripts and watched ninety episodes and movies to find the appropriate clips for this episode. He sourced Spock's clips from all eras of Trek, from Star Trek (1966) to Star Trek (2009).
The producers wanted Brett Gray to interact with another actor. They first tried to bring in Michael Dorn as Worf, but he wasn't available. The decision was made to bring in Gates McFadden as Dr. Crusher instead.
