Beautiful scenery with paper thin plot
ice_sarah12 May 2010
I attended the premiere last night. I was a big fan of the first, so I knew this could never live up to it - I still enjoyed it.

The Kings of Mykonos clearly had a higher budget than the original, but a lot of charm was lost in this. The plot revolves around Steve & Frank heading to Mykonos to claim an inheritance from a long lost relative and the predictable hi-jinx ensue.

I don't think anyone was expecting an Oscar quality movie here, and it won't exceed those expectations. There are still sufficient laughs to be had, but it is certainly not the laugh-out-loud-only-in-Australia humour of the original Wog Boy.

Nick G & Vince C are starting to show their ages, but it works in the context of the film.

The two female leads are absolutely stunning in any language but you never quite buy the chemistry on screen. Kevin Sorbo has an amusing role as the King of Mykonos, and Alex Dimitriades's Mihali character had so much potential but barely has a line in the film considering the pivotal role.

The ending of the film was confusing and abrupt and I'm not quite sure what was supposed to go on there. It might be worthwhile waiting for the DVD version to see if there was an alternate ending. I also read that there was a sex scene filmed, but this certainly wasn't in the edit I saw last night.

All in all, I recommend it - particularly if you enjoyed the music and oh-so-Melbourne "wogginess" of the original. The scenery is breathtaking which is a nice change for the film. Don't have exceedingly high expectations and you won't be disappointed.

stereotyped comedy and a beautiful island
georgioskarpouzas7 August 2010
I have not seen the first movie that acted as something approaching a first part therefore I would not comment on elements of continuity and coherence. This movie had a mixed reception in Greece to say the least, because many of the stereotypical attitudes that attributes to Greeks and Greek-Australians are negative in themselves: financial corruption, nepotism etc.

On the other hand, to use a term that has been the title of another Greek movie that was shot in Mykonos-it has many "beautiful people" in it, notably Makrypoulia and Copolla, who play a Greek singer and former Miss Italy respectively.

The funniest aspect of the film had to do with the appearance and behaviour of the two German archaeologists who finally make a discovery that acts as a catalyst in the development of the plot.

I can not say that it was a quality movie but it is fun, it is shot in a very charming place, Mykonos, as the title suggests and has some memorable appearances, if not performances. Good clean summer fun.

The kings of Mykonos, not comedy.
Jonathon_Natsis25 July 2010
It appears Hollywood's obsession with unnecessary sequels has hit Australian shores, with the recent release of perhaps the most unnecessary of all follow-up films: Kings of Mykonos. Nick Giannopoulos and Vince Colosimo reprise their roles as 'Wog Boys' Steve and Frank, who embark on a trip to the beautiful Greek island to claim what is theirs: a beach Steve has apparently inherited following the passing of his relative Panos. While trying to get around some red tape, and the evil intentions of Alex Dimitriades' Mihali, each learns a little something about love, friendship and family (it is a film about Greeks, after all).

Prior to viewing, this film carried with it the lowest expectations I've had for some time. That being said, I have to say that it wasn't terrible. Acting-wise, both Nick and Vince fail to convince in the opening scenes, but they eventually pick up where they left off in the original as the movie progresses. Dimitriades (best known as 'The Running Man' from the first season of Underbelly) comes along for the ride, and seems to relish bringing some comedic value to a non-traditional villain.

Fans of the original will enjoy cameos by Frank's wrestler-turned-pizza-store-owning dad, as well as the compensation-seeking uncle, both of whom make enjoyable references to The Wog Boy. The standout, though, is Tony Yugoslav, who benefits from a larger role in the sequel. He's still fat. Still a con artist. And still loves to swear. And yet, it works wonders in a film that plays to his style of humour.

Speaking of which, it almost goes without saying that the majority of humour in the film is targeted at Greek-Australians, and it helps to be of that nationality to appreciate the jokes. Despite this, some of the film's most comedic moments arise from playing off Greek stereotypes that even non-Greeks should recognise. Our laziness, obnoxiousness, love of food and (in the most memorable scene of the movie) hatred of Turks is all on display, delivering some hearty laughs in the process.

The dialogue is painfully cliché-ridden at times, particularly when the film takes a more sentimental as opposed to humorous approach, but innovation in this department was not exactly a priority of the filmmakers, nor was it expected by the audience.

Unfortunately, the film falls apart in the climactic act as director Peter Andrikidis tries to rectify the fact that the film has too many story arcs going on, and vainly attempts to solve them all in a limited time span. Indeed, he does just that, but not without the help of more than one application of the deu ex machina plot device, whereby an aspect of the story is quickly wrapped up by an inexplicable or highly implausible event. Simply put, it's a big no- no in the Dummies Guide To Filmmaking.

Finally, this is by no means a film to be taken seriously. While it can be criticised for many reasons related to the technical aspects of filmmaking (dialogue, story development, etc.) its main purpose is to generate laughs, and it does just that as frequently as one would expect from a film marketed as a straight-out comedy.

*There's nothing I love more than a bit of feedback, good or bad. So drop me a line on jnatsis@iprimus.com.au and let me know what you thought of my review.*

The king has no clothes

OK, I'm Greek and I admit that this piece of not-art is an utter disgrace, full of stupid stereotypes. This is not a comedy. This is a donkey's waste that tries desperately to get some value. The plot is badly written and indifferent, the dialogs are awful, not even Starovas, who is an awesome comedian, cannot save this train wreck! And as for the scenery, well, Mykonos is not even close, one of Greece's most beautiful islands. The most well-known due to its Ibiza-like night-life and clubs, yes. But not beautiful. It's 90% rock. Try Dodecanisa or Eptanisa.

Also, it has some parts that seem a lot like a bad copy of a great Greek movie, Nisos.

Overall, do not waste your time for this nonsense. See Nisos instead.

Seriously.

Good for an Aussie Production

I'll admit this may be more like a 6 or 7 but from a cinematography point of view their are some great shots that would probably go unnoticed by most. Add to this images of my home town and some very funny one liners this makes better viewing on the 3/4th attempt on DVD.

There was a lot of juvenille comedy and coarse subject matter which is cringe worthy but that is the kind of style for ethnic comedies.

I gave it extra points for the simple fact that there where multiple characters that were exact representations of people I know, which is what these close to home films are meant to express. Just a shame the rudeness didn't qualify for a family viewing.

"watch where I'm going" Superb

(Not) Party Animals
kosmasp21 October 2010
I guess the movie might appear as pretty lame to quite a few guys who will watch it. And though it does use a tried and tested (succesfully at that) formula, it does not seem to really bring life to the whole thing. Still the effort the guys put in there and the fact that in this case I am a bit biased (Greek heritage living as a foreigner), makes me overlook a few things I guess.

You can have fun with this movie, though it never will achieve a status that "My big fat Greek wedding" has (though to me it is not so much inferior to the Vardalos picture, her recent career proving, that it/she might stay with that one big success), but it still might be enough to sit back and enjoy a movie about an island ... and some stuff. There is not much story, but it does use locals (you can hear it from their accent) and is just a neat little picture.

Wow
ssboogiemanslayer2 December 2010
I have a confession to make. I enjoy writing negative reviews. In a way it provides me with some sort of satisfaction after I've wasted my time and money on films that are simply not good.

I watched 'The Kings of Mykonos' on my birthday and I had reasonably high expectations that this film would serve its purpose - not be film of the year, but simply do what the first film managed to do: make me laugh. The acting was poor, the jokes were lame and the story was all over the place. I have never cringed so many times in my life.

The only saving grace in 'The Kings of Mykonos' was the scenery. But who cares? The movie was awful. Maybe if I was five I might have found it funny. I'm all for people having their own opinions but if you like this movie, I don't think we can still be friends. This is the worst movie I have ever seen.

drklabs3 October 2010
This is a real movie with nice actors and a nice plot , definitely this is not an Oscar movie but includes whatever people wants to see and relax . This is not a brainstormer this is a relax and spa movietherapy. Excellent job to everyone involved to this movie they have done their jobs very well i loved the first scene on the bridge singing the "born to be alive" it was better than million dollars comedies. Also the cast and all characters was excellent , Mykonos and its people was amazing and the photography was reflecting the real beauty of Greek islands, this is a movie that worths to watch don't look at the votes on IMDb it doesn't reflects the amazing work that all people made for this movie. I have watched thousands stupid Hollywood movies this year so this one was refreshing and enjoyable. So people do you like Mykonos life? Then have fun. I m voting 7/10 because i really enjoyed it

Do not watch
moody_rox220 November 2010
one of the worst movies we have seen, how can a movie like that get finance.

No story line. Not funny. Bad Acting.

We watched the movie to the end for the credits to see who contributed in this disaster.

The movie would have been better done if the actors were themselves.

Wogs do not act that way.

have a plot, get acting lessons, get a writer, producer people who are successful in comedy movie.

Guys you make Australian movies look really bad.

we are very sorry to write this but guys we can do much better.

A lovely fun movie.
diane-3430 May 2010
Diane and I watched this lovely, unpretentious film yesterday and we both enjoyed this movie experience greatly. The comments about the movie and its low result from viewers illuminates the difficulty of contemporary movie appreciation. Yes, this film will not win awards nor will it win plaudits from reviewers but this raises the hoary question about what we the viewers want in a movie. I do not want to watch Disney movies with lifelike drawings of people; I realize that this movie making technique is a method of not spending huge salaries on actors for their roles in a film but I like our movies where real people do real things on the screen.

In this movie I have read complaints about the sketchiness of the plot and the paucity of acting in the film by some of the leads but I will have none of those criticisms. We loved the film; the island and the people and the buildings should be nominated for an award for best actor. The setting was magnificent and the actors blended into this beautiful background with ease. The script was a vehicle, not so much to challenge us intellectually but to present a canvas into which these fine Greek actors could play out their roles in the beauty of Mykonos. The script is merely the vehicle by which the true star of the film, Mykonos, can take centre stage. This is the best thing about film; it allows the viewer to remove themselves from the contemporary world and escape into something more than us.

Charming but incoherent
Pritchie453 May 2024
My long and well written review wasn't submitted properly. Hastely I'll leave my frustrations with the movie. To sum up the positives, the characters are, the plot is interesting, the setting is marvelous, the foreign environment is captivating, and the humour is on point.

My frustrations simply are the simplistic ending and the numerous subplots. I would rather have a shorter film if the stronger subplots couldn't be worked on to improve the movie overall.

My biggest gripe is the subplot involving the goat and the Germans. The have a handful of scenes that don't connect to one another and are filled with coincidences that impact the story but could be easily worked around to avoid lazy situations. They are funny the first time they are introduced but in the end they interfere with what would have a been a better way to end the movie. A car race is better than a village scramble.

Also, even though the familial twist doesn't add any layer to the film it didn't annoy me. The drama was needed and wasn't bewildering. The worst is when the characters turn on a whim and exposed for evil but the real impact of their decisions isn't convincingly portrayed.

A Greek-Australian dish that satisfies
diogenes-858-44916729 September 2010
Nick Giannopoulos and his team have crafted another genuinely funny movie. This is a character driven, rare comedy whose simplicity belies its talents. Rare because Giannopoulos' humour comes from the heart. This lends much pathos to the characters we meet in 'Kings of Mykonos'. It warms us to, and sustains, our interest in a storyline that is clever without being contrived, is flawed without ever being pretentious.

The enjoyment Giannopoulos and his cast get out of every moment and every scene should be in the textbook for comedy filmmaking. It's a skill many bigger names in the industry will never master. Giannopoulos is an Aussie gem, and Kings of Mykonos reflects every facet of his talent.

Warning: Spoilers
Man goes to Greece to claim fortune. Has to pay taxes and the rest is just a bit of fun. I thought Alex Dimitriades Englsih with a Greek accent was hysterical. But then he could say nothing at all and I would be happy, he is still a bit dishy. The supporting talent was a bit thin but I loved the mad woman in blue jabbering at them in Greek holding a very sharp knife. LOL. always gets a laugh. Great follow to wog boy. It's nicely filmed with great Aussie talent. The scenery is a bit special. Don't expect a masterpiece, it isn't that, but it is something to funny to watch when you just want to sit and be amused and not to have to think too hard. Sit back, relax and put your feet up. If you like the actors, then this is for you, otherwise you might be a bit bored.

A very funny movie!
dimitris-1213 August 2010
I was amazed that this movie got such a low score! I mean, OK, it's not Oscar material, but it's a funny movie! Having seen both films (Wog Boy, and TKOM), I enjoyed this one, even more.

I agree that the ending of the film was abrupt (not confusing), Kevin Sorbo was a absolutely delight to watch (having seen his 'Hercules' role, adds to the "delight" part). I have been in Mykonos many times, the portrayal is over-stretched, but within acceptable "limits". And anyway, it helps the story beautifully.

Don't miss this movie, if afterwards you "die" to go to Mykonos, don't blame me ;-) (even if you don't, it would be time well spent).

Nick G Grows Up
alexf-1230 September 2010
You really need to look at this movie for what it is - a realisation by Nick G and Co. that what we as Greek Australians think it is to be 'Greek' is far from ....

Most Greek Aussies think that they are Greek until they actually go to Greece where they realise that they are a different type of Greek. We are no more Greek than the African Americans are African. We are a hybrid, a culture on to our own. And guess what ... there is nothing wrong with that.

For the first time Nick G respects both the Aussie Greeks and the Greeks from Greece. We are not portrayed as stupid, un-educated, simple or without class. And it's about time ! The boys arrive in Greece thinking that they will be met with village Greeks. The Greeks have moved on. They are glamorous, rich, smart and sophisticated. And guess what ? They consider the Greek Australians foreigners ! A hard lesson.

You need to look at this movie and understand the undertones. Understand what Nick G and Co have realised. They have grown up and its about time.

Beautiful location
robertemerald23 October 2020
It's hard not to enjoy The Kings of Mykonos. It has such an International, or at least European holiday flair. There are great characters and some genuinely funny lines. The story is oddball but unravelled at a good pace, and in the end is actually very clever. I took a point off for the two leads acting as if they are 18 years old. The two female leads were stunning too. Great cultural comedy, and a high standard of filmmaking.
