Minimalistic, yet compelling

German psychological drama about a compulsive liar. This one adopts a pretty minimalistic approach and is made up of a series of long single takes. This approach can certainly slow down the pace of a movie but can work if the acting and script is of a good standard. I definitely though the latter was true here, with Moritz von Treuenfels in the central role, in particular, very good. It is a pretty convincing portrait of the behaviour of a fantasist, where you genuinely can't tell the fact from the fiction. Pretty compelling stuff.

Best German movie I've seen this year

Warning: Spoilers
The movie follows a man who can't help but to tell lies to the people surrounding him. It's never quite clear if he is simply a narcissistic personality or if there's more to it, some sort of mental health issue but in any case, the stories that unfold from this are fascinating to watch. The protagonist is very skillful in constructing his legend but still it's quite obvious that things are bound to come crashing down at some point and the movie keeps you on the edge of your seat to find out when and how this is going to happen. Sometimes it's a little painful to watch (Fremdschämen) but for the most part very engaging with little downtime.
