Memories

Our family watched this show regularly when it was first run, but I don't think I have seen this episode since that original broadcast. It does bring back pleasant memories.

I am about the same age as Barry Livingston, and if he had not been working, but was a student in LAUSD, he would have started high school back in February 1969.

I am not quite sure what prompted the writers or producers to make the change in season 10 of introducing Beverly Garland as Barbara, the romantic interest/wife for Steve Fred MacMurray. Perhaps the popularity of the Tina/Robbie arc, as well as the hole resulting when they moved out gave them the idea of finally give Steve a genuine love interest.

This was my first introduction to Beverly Garland, and it was not until I was an adult that I got to see some of her earlier roles. What a difference,

I also liked that line they gave guest star Stafford Repp, about the infraction he invented to threaten Steve with. Odd that, even though we also watched the first run of Batman (1966), at the time I did not make the connection it was the same actor.

Followed today on MeTV by an episode of Toon in with Me (2021) featuring cartoons from 1964.

A RING FOR BARBARA, HEADACHES FOR STEVE?
tcchelsey4 April 2024
Writer George Tibbles was quite creative with this very famous episode, and you have to admit, a bit of the practical joker.

10 Stars.

Stories like this made MY THREE SONS, and in fact, the latter episodes were as fresh as ever. You'd think this was the start of a new series, as compared to many other sitcoms that generally ran out of ideas in later years. We are talking a record 10th season. Excellent direction by Fred De Cordova, as usual.

Steve wants to "pop the question" to Barbara, the ring all ready --but curcumstances ALL WRONG. That's the episode summary in a nutshell.

This scenario isn't really that far from the truth. How many of us could relate to a situation in our own lives that took lots of planning, only to see it all fall apart. True, it's a bit over the top, but fun as heck.

You would never think that Steve --at this stage -- would have a run-in with the law?

Beautifully cast (and it had to have been a joke) with Stafford Repp (famous as Inspector O'Hara on BATMAN) playing a cop here? Of all things. Naomi Stevens, who we all loved, returns as Mama Rossini, who you think was either Steve or Barbara's doting mother. She was a one of a kind actress.

Also a treat, for a change of pace, to see Beverly Garland in a more domestic role, as compared to all the campy, tough as nails ladies (either in prison or being chased by monsters!) she played for years. She was having a ball here. At her famous hotel in North Hollywood, I will never forget, she had a terrific color family portrait of the "My Three Sons" cast mounted for everyone to see. You couldn't miss it. Tourists loved it.

As good as it gets, and a must see for all the memories. Great tv viewing, and a lot more to come. Stay tuned.

From SEASON 10 EPISODE 4 remastered/color.

Thank you again to METV.
