Luke Newton is doing his homework in how to be a Bridgerton leading man.
Before season 3 — which will see his character, Colin Bridgerton, become the lover of Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) — Newton sought out his leading man predecessors, Regé-Jean Page and Jonathan Bailey, for advice.
Speaking to InStyle, Newton said that Page, who played the series’ first leading man, Simon, the Duke of Hastings, told him to go on a “big holiday before all the madness starts.”
“[Page] sort of grabbed me, gave me a big hug and was like, ‘Are you ready for this, bro?’” Newton said. Page departed Bridgerton following season 1 and has never reprised his role as Simon, husband to Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor).
Bailey had a different path. He became a mainstay and led season 2, which saw him fall in love with Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley). Newton told the outlet that Bailey has “been there kind of the whole way for me.

As Netflix continues to gain subscribers, it may have a harder and harder time getting them all to watch the same content.
Netflix may have more subscribers than any other streaming service in the world, but that puts it in a unique position: that of leader. That means that Netflix has to continue experimenting with ways to add and retain customers, while its competitors can continue to chip away at its subscriber advantages and see if Netflix’s experiments are successful before deciding whether or not to emulate them moving forward. One of the major recent overhauls by the world’s largest streamer was the introduction of an ad-supported tier, and a new report indicates that this strategy has been increasingly successful for Netflix. However, it could also be leading to a dilution of Netflix’s ability to concentrate its customers’ attention on big-name titles.

Netflix added nearly 30 million global paid subscribers in 2023, though it might have watered down its hit pool in the process.
According to a new study by British streaming-data company Digital i, Netflix had fewer than half the global hits in 2023 (10) than it had in 2022 (22). Digital i defines a “hit” as an original movie or a series that was watched by at least 30 percent of Netflix’s subscriber base in North America, EU, and Latam.
The long list of 2022 Netflix hits goes like this: “Wednesday” (61.8%), “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” (53.3%), “Stranger Things 4” (48.0%), “The Adam Project” (47.9%), “Knives Out 2” (45.9%), “The Gray Man” (42.4%), “The Watcher” (41.9%), “The Tinder Swindler” (38.0%), “Inventing Anna” (37.5%), “The Sandman” (35.7%), “Senior Year” (35.6%), “1899” (34.7%), “Bridgerton” Season 2 (34.5%), “Troll” (34.0%), “Enola Holmes 2” (33.7%), “Luckiest Girl Alive” (33.4%), “Harry & Meghan” (32.7%), “Hustle” (32.6%), “The Man from Toronto” (31.5%), “Purple Hearts” (31.3%), “Me Time” (31.1%), “Day Shift” (31.0%), and “Falling for Christmas” (30.8%).

‘Secret Invasion’ premiered last summer, receiving mixed reactions. Despite criticism for its rushed and nonsensical adaptation of a popular Marvel comic storyline, the show garnered nominations for several smaller awards. Despite the show’s flaws, the cast delivered outstanding performances, leading to Don Cheadle winning the NAACP Image Award for Best Supporting Actor in his role as James Rhodes. Rhodes’ storyline, revealing him as a Skrull, was somewhat predictable, with suspicions arising even before the show’s release.
Additionally, Sherri Shepherd hosted a gala event recognizing talent across 20 categories. Cord Jefferson and Ava DuVernay secured Image Awards for outstanding screenplay and best director respectively. ‘Abbott Elementary’ received two awards, alongside other successful productions such as ‘The Color Purple,’ ‘Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,’ and ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.’ Notable winners also included Chloe Bailey, Ayo Edebiri, and Keith Powers.
Shepherd was honored with the Outstanding Talk Show Host Award, thanking everyone for her journey.

‘Secret Invasion’ was released last summer and the reactions to it were mixed at best. The show failed to properly adapt a famous comic storyline and was widely criticized for being nonsensical and rushed. Still, this didn’t mean that the show wouldn’t be nominated for plenty of smaller awards. Despite the criticism of the show, the cast remained superb and due to that Don Cheadle in the role of James Rhodes recently won the NAACP Image Award for best supporting actor in the show.
Rhodes was part of a somehow predictable twist that he was a Skrull all along, something that was suspected even before the show was released.
Sherri Shepherd hosted a gala event honoring talented individuals across 20 categories. Cord Jefferson, fresh from winning an Oscar, scooped the Image Award for outstanding screenplay. Ava DuVernay claimed her third Image Award for best director. ‘Abbott Elementary’ snagged two awards,...

We may not be headed to Virgin River just yet, but the cast sure is!
Since we all love a little small-town gossip and great news, here are a few tidbits to spread around and discuss courtesy of Deadline:
Virgin River is back in production today!
While we still won't get to escape to our favorite town and all the melodrama that ensues there until 2025, at least we know the strike delays are out of the way, and filming is back in motion.
And since the cast loves us so much, they'll hopefully be teasing us with tidbits to hold us over along the way.
But that's not all we have to mull over in the interim.
The hit Netflix series will take a spin at its own spinoff in the form of a prequel.

While film awards have mostly been steady as they go, despite the WGA and SAG strikes last year, the TV awards timeline has been tied in absolute knots to the point where one deserves an award for even being able to guess which season of a show is in contention.
Normally, an announcement like the 2024 WGA Awards nominations would let us know what new shows are likely to become the next class of Emmy contenders. This year, what sticks out more are the nominees whose awards runs are still chugging along a year after their premieres. All the nominees in the New Series category — “The Diplomat,” “Jury Duty,” “The Last of Us,” “Poker Face,” and “Shrinking” — are for TV seasons that have already just finished their Emmy runs. Recovering from surgery reportedly includes “guilty pleasure” TV for Kate Middleton. No, it’s not The Crown, the award-winning series about Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, in which a college-aged Kate is depicted, sheer fashion show dress and all. Rather, the Princess of Wales is said to be watching reality TV and a steamy period drama.
‘Bridgerton and ‘The Kardashians’ are among Kate’s ‘guilty pleasure’ TV shows while recovering from surgery
“It’s been a very challenging time” for the Wales family, per a report from Ok! Magazine. However, it’s also meant lots of rest for Kate at Adelaide Cottage, the family’s home in Windsor, England, near Windsor Castle.
A source told the outlet Kate has made time for “reading” and TV. Kate’s been “streaming her guilty pleasure shows, like Bridgerton and The Kardashians,” they said, noting the mother of three is “secretly kind of enjoying the downtime.

The Oscar-frontrunning “Maestro” was the big winner at the 11th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards (held February 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein opus took period/character makeup and special makeup effects. This puts “Maestro” in the Oscar driver’s seat (led by two-time winner Kazu Hiro) against “Poor Things,” “Oppenheimer,” “Golda,” and “Society of the Snow.”
Two non-Oscar competitors, “Saltburn”and “Barbie,” split the other wins: Emerald Fennell’s psychological thriller grabbed both contemporary makeup and hairstyling, while Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster snagged period/character hairstyling.
TV winners, meanwhile, were divided among “The Idol” (contemporary makeup), “The Crown” (period/character makeup), “The Last of Us” (special makeup effects), “The Morning Show” (contemporary hairstyling), and “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” (period/character hairstyling).

“Fool Me Once” has joined Netflix’s chart of its Top 10 most popular English-language TV shows in the ninth position.
Netflix compiles this chart by calculating views across each title’s first 91 days of availability on the platform. With 84.9 million total views in just 35 days, “Fool Me Once” slots in between “Bridgerton” Season 2 (No. 8 with 93.8 million views) and “The Witcher” (No. 10 with 83 million views). The previous tenth-most-popular title on the list was the May 2023 limited series “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,” which reached 81.3 million views in its first 91 days and has now fallen off of the list.
The achievement came during the Jan. 29-Feb. 4 viewing window, during which 5.1 million views made “Fool Me Once” the No. 4 most-watched Netflix series of the week.
“Griselda” was the No. 1 title for the second week in a row, this time reaching 20.6 million views in its first full week of availability. The Sofia Vergara series...

It’s been a big start to 2024 for Colman Domingo and Ayo Edebiri who — after earning their first Oscar nomination and Emmy win, respectively — lead the pack of film and TV nominees for the 55th NAACP Image Awards.
Domingo is nominated for three awards: outstanding actor in a motion picture for “Rustin,” outstanding supporting actor for “The Color Purple” and entertainer of the year, the ceremony’s top prize.
Edebiri is nominated for outstanding supporting actress for “The Bear” and guest actress for “Abbott Elementary.” Victoria Monét received the most nominations in the music recording categories, earning six nods including outstanding new artist. The “Jaguar II” hitmaker is followed closely by Usher, who earned five nominations including entertainer of the year.
Fantasia Barrino, Halle Bailey and Keke Palmer — three multihyphenate talents who happened to share the screen with Domingo and Usher this year — round out the nominees for that award.

The successful resolutions of two strikes later, the winners of the Creative Arts Emmys will be announced on January 6 (scripted programming) and January 7 (non-scripted programming), starting at 8 p.m. Et, prior to an edited broadcast of the ceremonies airing on Fxx January 13.
Just how long have the 2023 Emmys been in the making? Well, nominees include “The White Lotus,” which hasn’t aired since December 2022. Likewise, Hulu’s “Fire Island,” “Welcome to Chippendales,” and “Hocus Pocus 2” (remember that?!) are all among the TV projects nominated, as well as more recent shows like “Poker Face.”

So much for the black box.
Netflix today has revealed viewership data for 99% of its entire catalog, or more than 18,000 titles available around the world. It published the numbers in a report, What We Watched, capturing viewing from January to June of 2023. It is the first edition of a planned semi-annual look at viewership. The initiative aims to document the the full picture instead of the existing glimpses of only the top-performing programming. The company pointed out that its existing Top 10 lists have a large degree of overlap with the full data, with 60% of the titles in the first-half study having made appearances in the Top 10 at some point.
“This is a big step forward for Netflix and our industry,” the company wrote in a blog post. “We believe the viewing information in this report — combined with our weekly Top 10 and Most Popular lists — will give creators and our industry deeper insights into our audiences,...

Netflix is expanding its viewership data transparency with the release of its first biannual report covering six months of streaming habits on the platform, revealing for the first time how licensed content like USA Network drama “Suits” performs alongside the streamer’s originals.
The new report, titled “What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report,” covers more than 18,000 titles and nearly 100 billion hours viewed between January-June 2023. It includes: 1) hours viewed for every title (both Netflix original and licensed TV shows and movies) watched for more than 50,000 hours during that period; 2) the premiere date for any Netflix original TV series or film; and 3) whether a title was available globally.
Each piece of that information is key here, because these findings aren’t as cut and dried as Netflix’s weekly Top 10 reports and “Most Popular” lists. For example, at the top of this report is “The Night Agent,” a series that debuted...

Apparently, the third season of Shondaland’s Bridgerton is “ultra-sexy.” And now it (finally) has a return date: the Netflix series will be back — and in two parts — in the spring of 2024.
Part 1 will premiere on May 16, followed by Part 2 on June 13. There are a total of eight episodes.
As previously announced, the season will follow the budding romance between Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton), known by fans as #Polin.

Here’s the complete synopsis: Penelope has finally given up on her long-held crush on Colin after hearing his disparaging words about her last season. She has, however, decided it’s time to take a husband, preferably one who will provide her with enough independence to continue her double life as Lady Whistledown, far away from her mother and sisters. But lacking in confidence,...

Growing up, Kris Bowers felt like he was an outsider trying to fit in.
These days, he is anything but that in Hollywood. The Oscar-nominated composer has scored a wide array of projects in the past five years, ranging from “Green Book” to “When They See Us,” and worked with Ava DuVernay and Shonda Rhimes repeatedly. This year alone, the Daytime Emmy winner’s credits include “Origin” and “The Color Purple” in addition to “Chevalier,” “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,” and “Haunted Mansion.”
It was during his middle school years — “a troubling time emotionally,” Bowers says — that he discovered how to channel his feelings through music. The L.A. native, who learned to play the piano at age 4 before expanding his training in classical and jazz, found himself gravitating back to the keyboard once puberty hit.
“The piano was more of a thing that I wanted to do because I...

Turns out, it wasn’t much of a challenge at all.
“Squid Game: The Challenge” dominated Netflix’s overall leaderboard in its debut week, when it drew 20.1 million views. The unscripted competition series picked up where the I.P. left off in 2021, bumping Part 1 of “The Crown’s” sixth season to second place (8.8 million views) for the week of November 20, 2023.
“Squid Game: The Challenge,” filmed in the UK, is an English-language series; Og “Squid Game” was a Korean-language series dubbed into local languages. As such, the scripted show technically rests atop Netflix’s “Non-English” list, though it blows away all the English-language stuff anyway.
“The Challenge” was so big it brought “Squid Game” back to the Global Top 10 for non-english series — at no. 6 with 1.6 million views — its 21st appearance. The scripted show hadn’t made the list since the week ending June 19, 2022. The long Thanksgiving holiday weekend sure helped the streams pile up.

Gossip, romance, and enough drama to make even the most composed debutante swoon — Bridgerton has it all. Not many shows can transport viewers into a world of opulence and societal intricacies while providing a modern twist on historical romance. Based on Julia Quinn‘s book series, Shonandaland developed the script for Netflix and boy was it a hit. The show itself was so successful that it gave birth to the equally well-received Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. Altogether, the show’s heart and its ability to spark conversation have made it a cultural phenomenon. But more than anything, it’s the wholesome...

Will Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story return for Season 2 on Netflix? Here's what we think the future may hold.
After finding great success in Regency-era romance Bridgerton across its first two seasons, Netflix expanded the world with its first spin-off in Summer 2023, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.
