Once again, IMDB's scoring system confuses
krumblburgh10 December 2021
Inspector Koo, or A Wonderful Sight is cleverly written and fairly stylish. The performances are all good-to-excellent, especially the leads. The best Korean comedy/drama? Perhaps not, but I have never seen a show have its imdb rating score swoop about so much!

At this time of writing, 88 out of 117 viewers rating it gave it a score of 7 or higher, with the largest group by far giving it a "10". Yet it now stands at 6.6, which might put future audiences from giving the show a try. Give it a try, anyway, I say.

There are claims it is trying to be a Korean version of Killing Eve. In a way, it's closer in feel to Sherlock. Not at that level of quality, but in the sense of it using graphics and structure to tell a story about a deeply flawed detective using almost superhuman skills to track a killer of near-supervillainous talent.

Inspector Koo is a fun play on manga comic books, and has some great comic moments. I would actually rate it a 7ish but felt there should be something countering its low score.

6.7 and only at ep. 2? let it breathe, mates.
WordsworthStone6 November 2021
I'm picking up some very strong 'Killing Eve' vibes. BUT only on episode 2, so just saying, wonder how they'll run with it. Some harsh critics on just exposition, come on, enjoy each quirky personality--sociopaths or genius?

***edit*** i'm on episode 3 and i just realized it's trying to be like a manga comic--makes more sense now.

Quirky and compelling
Jodie_ds1 November 2021
I didn't expect much from this based on the synopsis, but I'm glad I took a punt. The supporting characterisations are really interesting, and the two leads are different and dysfunctional in quite separate ways. I'm really interested to see where they go with this and how the character arcs develop.

I'm also really interested to see how the cartoon/manga aspects are further used, as they allow you to take a step back from what is otherwise a quite blasé consideration for violence.

Don't chase money, chase power.
alaningle712 December 2021
Interestingly the star of Lady Vengeance Lee Young-ae plays an ex police officer in pursuit of a serial killer played by Kim Hye-jun, who kills evil people. It is well acted particularly by these two ladies and parts of the story and interaction with the leads are very entertaining. Sadly the series is let down by the writers as the story takes a quirky individual in Lee Young-ae and makes her stupidly annoying. The ending is a little cobbled together and the humour within the series is mostly a miss. So disappointed as with this cast it could have been brilliant and it parts of the series it is, but then it dips to mundane.

An Extraordinary Cat & Mouse Thriller
harvieG12 January 2022
For some, this show may take a while to get into. The deep intricate (not weak) plot and constant switching back and forth between past and present; and between sets, requires one's full unflinching attention to fully capture its mosaic-piece revelations and contextualise the manic scene jumps.

Having freshly emerged from Saimdang into Inspector Koo, one needed to reset one's expectations to appreciate this completely different genre. Not something to watch whilst multitasking, especially when fully reliant on English subtitles.

Thanks to TheReviewGeek.com episode reviews, the lights came on and Inspector Koo turned out to be highly enjoyable kooky hilarious life manga cat and mouse thriller. The cast chemistry fitted well together apart from a really annoying hapless Santa. Both female leads were stellar. A

Lee Young Ae was very brave to have accepted this role, which goes to show her versatility and willingness to explore/ portray vastly different genre characters. Initially off putting to see her eccentric character, however in hingsight she fitted in like a glove. The showcase was Yi-Kung's character

Crime dramas are best told in 1-2 episodes but this has managed to pull off 12 hence a little protracted but highly engaging after all (on third take).

Actually rather entertaining with many cartoon moments which (if you flip the switch) can be hilarious.

Koreas version of Killing Eve?
Youbringthemunchies9 November 2021
Three episodes in & although I am enjoying it, I feel like I'm not watching an original crime series. Some of the scenes (a chase scene) feels a bit far fetched. I do like the characters, the quirky inspector with her side kick Santa are a great pairing. The serious Oh Gyeong-Su gets his buttons pushed by Inspector Koo - that's fun to watch. I'm not feeling Song Yi-Kyung's character - she's like a poor man's Villanelle (Killing Eve). However it's still early days so my opinions might change.

Female live action DeathNote?
pdxqraj4 December 2021
I loved the cat and mouse interplay between the inspector and K. Very good show reminiscent of DeathNote and HBO's Miss Sherlock, except the inspector is a distrustful sloth, more like Dr. House. The supporting cast are also terrific, and I have a soft spot for the seemingly mute Santa. The show evolves into something very different from the first episode. Very good progression, and looking forward to a second season.

backnblack-061233 November 2021
Just two episodes in but its a nice change good writing and acting, this is a welcomed change from the typical KD out there, not sure they can keep it up for 16 hours though.

Episode 3 was pretty dang boring don't think this can last im not investing a series of viewing on this premiss.

Lee Young-ae's acting skills wasted once again
CriticalShock12 December 2021
Lee Young-ae's is once again starring in a production under the helm of director/writer Kim Seung-woo, their previous collaboration was Bring Me Home, a manipulative and embarrassingly melodramatic thriller and this series is just another failure. Our main character is supposed to be quirky and humorous, but comes off as fake and cringey. The music and editing heavily contribute to the cringe factor, it's trying so hard to be quirky and stylish it becomes annoying pretty quickly. This is not a compelling mystery, I was bored and uninterested since the first episode and I found most of the cast very bland and forgettable. Young-ae deserves better, she should be working with a director of Park Chan-wook's caliber, one can only hope she won't be wasting her acting skills for a third time with this man.

So much potential...
newkrejados20 August 2022
... wasted. The premise is fascinating on so many levels. Female serial killer, the psychology of killers and what drives them to kill. The self-awareness, extreme intelligence and resourcefulness of such a killer. The profound loneliness and craving for connection that some killers feel. The contrast between someone with a psychological need to kill and those who kill merely for expediency's sake.

Occasionally, we got a glimpse of those elements but mostly, they were glossed over, supplanted by absurd fits of giggling and disrupted by cartoon and video game sequences. We could have overlooked the unreality of an entire nation's police force not being called on to help hunt/capture a confessed serial killer if the series had been treated less fluffily. As it was, the whole thing drowned in absurdity.

I'd love to watch a series take on the same premise but without all the goofy crap.

Kooky? Not Really.
sareed19716 November 2021
I gave Inspector Koo a chance to settle into the individual characterizations, but the overacting by the FL is just too distracting for me. After 3 episodes her attempt to act quirky is beyond annoying. It's a shame because all the other characters are great. What was enjoyable was seeing 3 former cast members from Hospital Playlist.

Season 2 please !!!
jimmy_j_91126 January 2022
This is so nice to see Lee Yeong-ae surrounded by amazing cast and display her talent as a serious, clever and funny character. This is a refreshing portrait of a drunk devasted detective ! Original as all the clues come and go. We appreciate all the roles and it is cool to see this gang becoming attached to each others. Lee Yeong-ae is perfect and the outfit is legendary. We get more in 1 season than we usually get from other series, this shows how generous korean series are ! This serie has some flaws but overall it Is so pleasant to watch that it is ok.

Fizzles out
Azaiu19 March 2022
Has a strong start with quirky unique characters, then fades off as there are many plot holes, namely the ease of which the antagonist is not apprehended. There is an absence of any actual police with crime happening in mostly every episode which dumbs down the immersion. It doesn't really take itself seriously where it needs to be, Lee Yeong-ae's character is well played and keeps things interesting throughout although she is not backed up by any physically stronger character (or a gun) or any actual combat skill) which was her main weakness. Koo made her impressive detective tactics seemingly useless even though she outsmarted the antagonist on most occasions, it becomes very needlessly frustrating.

Please let there be a season two!!!
supernaturali-777588 February 2022
I loved this show so much. Its clever, the characters are great and likeable, the plot was detailed and engaging and it has plenty of opportunities for more stories. I've only started getting into K-dramas but this is one of my favourites so far so I'm really hoping Netflix will bring it back!!

Good Enough
PennyReviews1 April 2022
Korean Drama "Inspector Koo" has a truly dynamic duo. Though, to be fair, Miss Koo herself is a delightful mess. But K too was intriguing and a complex character that, alas, was not well explored and left half baked in the end.

But, first thing first. The main story is pretty entertaining, filled with action, and with an interesting take when it came to explaining the events in a theatrical way. However, things got bleak quickly and overcomplicated towards the ending.

The two leading ladies, on the other hand, were incredible together. They had chemistry and their interactions were something to look forward in each episode, other than their individual arcs. The other side characters were interesting as well, not matching the main leads, but being fairly complex themselves.

Finally, the performances were all enjoyable and great by everyone.

So, overall, 7 out of 10.

If only...
Park_Min25 September 2023
I really appreciate its style but the plot was sacrificing way too much in favor of its supposed black comedy. Sure the drama had its high moments where the comedy really shined but the endless 12 episodes chase was exhausting and poorly executed. At least there's more to like about it, the drama had a good selection of soundtracks that amplified its stylistic moments. I wish this drama was a movie, it would have been a lot more fitting for what it had to offer. Anyway, the drama seems to be an accurate representation of Lee Young Ae's long hiatuses. You may give it a shot for a fresh watch...

Another Netflix crop
loloimdb23 December 2021
Netflix has just seen how Western audience is so fascinated by Asian culture, and since then, is on a spree, producing and creating tons of Korean and Japanese series and films. Unfortunately with Netflix, it's money first, quality later (or never)... This kind of Korean comedy has already been seen many times.

I read some good reviews that got my curiousity so I gave it a try.

2 episodes down, and I was so bored that I started watching youtube on my computer while the series was still on... There's much better Comedy/mystery series out there, don't waste your time. It's not because it's Korean that it's better, especially when Netflix is involved.

Inspector Koo
Tweekums2 May 2023
This Korean drama/comedy in centred on Koo Kyung-yi, a former cop who when the series starts is staying home drinking and playing online games. She is called in by Na Je-hee, who works as an insurance inspector. It seems like a fairly routine case of finding out if a man committed suicide or died in an accident. It soon becomes apparent that something more sinister is going on. Koo and her colleagues start to suspect a serial killer is at work; a killer who is targeting 'bad' people. The identity of this killer, dubbed 'K', is no secret from the viewer and the investigators soon identify her... proving it and stopping her won't be easy though.

I thought this series was a lot of fun. There might not be too much in the way of mystery but the series delivers fun characters, quite a few laughs and some surprisingly tense moments. The cast does a really fine job; I particularly enjoyed Lee Young-ae's performance as Koo Kyung-yi. Kim Hye-jun impressed as 'K'. Things do get a bit quirky at times, I rather enjoyed these moments but I can understand that some viewers might think it goes too far. The fact that K is targeting 'bad' people makes her slightly more sympathetic that she might otherwise be but the series doesn't try to justify what she does. As well as the main two characters there are plenty of other great characters, these include those working with Koo and those of a more villainous nature. Overall I'd definitely recommend this to fans of Korean drama who want a touch of comedy; it was one of the best I've seen for a while.

These comments are based on watching the series in Korean with English subtitles.

Not compelling ....
PeterHerrmann17 July 2022
..not sure why not. Perhaps the characters too stereotyped; or just not appealing. Perhaps they tried to hard. Perhaps the case (I didn't get through the first episode) was of no interest to me. I've really loved some other S. Korean series and movies ... just not this one. Wish I could say why. The production values (cinematography, etc) were excellent, but sometimes more than that is needed to make it work.

Second Attempt at Reviewing this Utter Disappointment
divemabini9 October 2022
I originally gave this show a 3, simply because I am tired of writers being lazy and giving 40kg female characters the ability to beat the crap out of everyone and elude authorities like they're ninjas, rather than writing female characters who are smart and use their talents to advance the plot.

But after watching the last 4 episodes, I lowered the score to 2 stars. Simply because my complaints above become extreme towards the end. This isn't a Marvel superhero movie. Or a sci-fi flick. Or a fantasy. This is supposedly a crime drama mystery.

So why oh why do Korean writers continue to fall back on the pixie lead character smashing her way out of tight spots against people three times her size. Sometimes multiple people. You're trying to write a smart female lead who uses guile to get the best of her opponents, but you have nothing better to advance her plot than her smashing people to bits.

It would be nice if these studios could write a female villain without using male testosterone punch-fest tropes that are an insult to women.

Lead cast & soundtrack
elalubecka11 April 2022
Such a good concept, mesmerising intro, and the best soundtrack I've seen in k-drama so far. Lead is really strong too, it has real Death Note vibe. Shame that action is going downhill pretty quickly. It's not bad, but it could be better. Visually 10/10, writing let's it down...

Give it a chance.
nitefalcon-159416 March 2022
I admit first couple episodes I wasnt into and unsure of what was happening, but as I continued watching, it all falls into place. From about episode four on I binged watch it and hope they will give it another season.(It's that good) Kim hye-junk was really fun to watch as her character 'K'. It is a cat and mouse game between the characters who are both interesting and strong females. Do Not rate this show based on two or three episodes, My advice, Finish it then rate.
