Many iconic heroes from literary history, due to their status within the public domain, have been adapted countless times to the big screen. There's bound to be a new film or series about King Arthur, Robin Hood, Zorro, Tarzan, or the Three Musketeers every few years, but there isn’t a character with more screen appearances than Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. Many adaptations of the character have tried to replicate the tone intrinsic to Doyle’s original stories, but the BBC series Sherlock made the radical decision to set the character in modern times, completely inverting expectations about his mythology. Although Sherlock did a great job of revamping some of the most iconic stories from Doyle’s era, Andrew Scott’s scene-stealing performance as the brilliant Jim Moriarty instantly ranked among television’s greatest villains.

With his victory on Monday at the Critics’ Circle Theatre awards, Andrew Scott has made history. The Irish performer, recognized as best actor for his one-man West End show, “Vanya,” previously was named best actor at the 2024 Critics’ Circle Film Awards for his performance in “All of Us Strangers.” He’s the first person to win lead actor Critics’ Circle prizes in both film and television in the same year.
“It’s a thrilling delight,” Scott says. “I’ve been involved with both film and theater ever since I started acting when I was 17 years old. I’ve always worked between the two mediums. So to have these two projects, which were very dear to me, be recognized is more than I could have wished for.”
In the case of “Vanya,” Simon Stephens’ adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s “Uncle Vanya,” Scott played all of the show’s eight roles. That was a herculean task,...

Minor TV characters can have a major impact on the plot & the main characters in unexpected ways. The best supporting characters enhance the show but don't always alter the main storyline significantly. When minor characters drive major plot points, it can be shocking & create new dimensions to the story.
Characters don't always need a lot of time to leave their mark on a show, and some minor TV characters can influence the plot in surprising ways. Characters who show up for just one episode can still be just as important as the protagonists, as long as they shape how the plot moves forward. In other cases, a background character can step into the spotlight for a while and change everything, before going back to being a part of the furniture. The best TV supporting characters make their shows much better, but they don't often change the story very much.

Switching up a show's format can produce memorable TV moments like musical episodes and unique plot structures. Some experimental TV episodes, like Atlanta's anthology episodes, can deviate from the norm yet maintain quality. Extreme changes in a show, such as Sherlock's Victorian special or the fan art episode of Bob's Burgers, may polarize fans.
Long-running TV shows often get experimental by changing their usual formula, but this can result in some episodes which feel like they don't even belong in the show. These episodes stick out from the rest of the show's run. Sometimes the characters are placed in completely different situations that aren't what the audience is used to. In some extreme cases, the main characters of the show barely show up at all. Experimenting with different episodes is a good way of keeping a show from becoming stale, but it can have some bizarre results.

Netflix has added yet another limited series contender to the 2024 Emmys cycle.
On Friday, the streaming platform announced “Eric,” a six-episode miniseries starring Benedict Cumberbatch, will debut on May 30. “Eric” is the second major limited series Netflix added to its May lineup this week, following the news that the David E. Kelley show “A Man in Full” with Jeff Daniels will premiere on May 2.
The 2024 Emmys eligibility period ends on May 31.
Created by the acclaimed playwright and screenwriter Abi Morgan, “Eric” is described by Netflix as an “emotionally gripping story of a desperate father searching for his son in 1980s New York; an era when racism, homophobia, and classism were neglected, and prejudices surrounding the AIDS epidemic were at the cultural forefront.”

Sherlock, a modernized take on Sherlock Holmes, will be streaming on Hulu starting March 26 after departing Netflix in 2021. Sherlock saw much success on streaming, but has largely stayed off the major platforms in recent years. Its return to streaming may spark interest in a potential season 5, which depends on the availability of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.
The acclaimed BBC show Sherlock has found a new streaming home close to three years after leaving Netflix. Beginning in 2010, the show was a modernized take on the Sherlock Holmes character, with Benedict Cumberbatch playing the titular sleuth and The Hobbit star Martin Freeman taking the role of Dr. Watson. Created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, the show won a total of nine Primetime Emmy Awards, as well as a Peabody Award, and ran for four seasons and 13 episodes before concluding in January 2017.

There has been an endless number of Sherlock Holmes adaptations over the last century. However, when it comes to versions of the iconic detective in the last 20 years, no series is as well known as the BBC’s Sherlock. The modern take saw Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role alongside Martin Freeman’s Dr. Watson. Now, over a decade since the show’s debut, Sherlock is coming to Hulu next week.

When it comes to the modern version of "Doctor Who," Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat very much embody the idea that, as Harvey Dent famously argued in "The Dark Knight" (much to Christopher Nolan's confusion), "You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain." When Davies revived "Who" in the aughts, he brought along a skilled writing team that included Mark Gatiss and his future "Sherlock" and "Dracula" TV series co-creator Moffat. Together, the pair injected a refreshing dosage of horror in the "Who"-verse with their respective season 1 episodes, "The Uniquet Dead" and the two-parter "The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances" (the latter of which introduced queer icon Jack Harkness to the series).
So far so good, right?

TV mysteries often lead to disappointing conclusions due to pressure on the writers to come up with an exciting resolution. George Sr.'s mistress in Young Sheldon was a surprising reveal involving a hilarious mixup with Sheldon's mother. Sherlock Holmes's faked death in Sherlock turned out to be an underwhelming result of various fan theories.
TV mysteries have engaged audiences for years, building suspense over a show's storyline or lore, but some have ended in a hugely anticlimactic way, disappointing audiences while not doing justice to the buildup. These mysteries not only raise the stakes in their respective TV shows but also result in character development, especially in the case of a whodunnit storyline. It's easy for audiences to get invested in these mysteries, which is why it's so disappointing when their resolution ends up being so underwhelming.
Of course, an anticlimactic end to a TV mystery can happen for a few reasons.

Benedict Cumberbatch has played many iconic characters in his career. Be it his breakthrough role of playing Sherlock Holmes in BBC’s Sherlock or voicing Smaug in The Hobbit franchise, Cumberbatch has brought his absolute best to each role. He has been playing the role of Doctor Strange in the MCU since 2016 and has been featured as the character in multiple films.
However, the Sorcerer Supreme was not the first role that he was offered in the Marvel franchise. While Strange met the Asgardian brothers Thor and Loki in Thor: Ragnarok, Cumberbatch would have met them even earlier had he accepted the initial part offered to him by the studio. However, he chose to wait it out instead.

In a post-All Of Us Strangers world, it’s never been clearer: Andrew Scott is one of our greatest living actors. Always prepared to bring a fresh take to something familiar and archetypal – whether it’s Moriarty in Sherlock, or one of his astounding Shakespearean performances on stage – he’s about to do it all over again with Ripley, Netflix’s new adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s Tom Ripley novels. Stories about revenge allow audiences to immerse themselves in a perfect world where evildoers are punished. Some anime have morally gray characters that will do anything, including sacrificing their loved ones, to achieve their goals. Many series will show the disastrous consequences of revenge and how it affects those who pursue it.
Tales of revenge will often serve as an emotional outlet for their audience. They give people feelings of control and allow them to fantasize about a perfect world where justice always prevails. Anime, in particular, has introduced some memorable stories about getting revenge. The medium is known for incorporating these themes across various genres.
Throughout history, revenge has been a recurring motif in fiction. It generally follows a character who seeks vengeance against the individual or group responsible for their suffering. While stories differ in context, many come with the message that revenge has dire consequences. Despite this,...

As the saying goes, good things don’t come easy (and often). While there has been an increase in the production of television series in recent years, only a handful are so spectacular that they will leave you with a long-lasting impression of them. Sometimes, audiences find hidden gems that become their favorite shows, but they don't last as long as they should. Some widely-beloved television series in this category include Sherlock, True Detective, and PEN15.

To surprise of basically no one, Robert Downey Jr. has just won his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor as Lewis Strauss in "Oppenheimer." The movie was one of the biggest hits of 2023, both critically and financially, and Downey was a huge part of it. He brought the scheming, insecure Strauss to life on the big screen, and helped take a storyline that could've felt like a bunch of complicated legal clutter and turn it into an emotional, high-stakes battle of wills.
Downey's win is heartwarming for a whole host of reasons. One is the actor's well-known struggles with addiction in the late '90s and early 2000s, and the other is Downey Jr.'s long history of starring in exciting, varied, interesting films. From "Tropic Thunder" to "Zodiac" to his many appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this man has definitely put in the work to reach this career milestone.

Natalie Portman ultimately won the role of Padmé Amidala, but only one other actress is known to have been in consideration for the role. Trust nobody except yourself ... and, on occasion, an irresistibly debonair Andrew Scott. Everybody loves a good con man story, and "Ripley," a new limited series debuting on Netflix this year, looks like it'll be delivering the goods. After the first "Ripley" trailer introduced potential viewers to the buzzy, black-and-white project and answered the question on all of our minds -- just who the heck is Tom Ripley? -- the streamer is now playing up the air of suspense and suspicion surrounding the "Sherlock" star's latest high-profile role. Basically, not a single person should trust this grifter who is running rampant all over 1960s Italy.

TV adaptations can change the tone of beloved source material for various reasons, sometimes well-received, but other times controversial. Examples like Avatar: The Last Airbender and Riverdale show how TV series can update and modernize their source material. Shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Sherlock successfully recontextualize original material for a contemporary audience with new twists.
Often, when a beloved comic, novel, or movie, received the television adaptation treatment, the result was a TV series that completely changed the tone of the source material. This can happen for many different reasons, and, in some circumstances, the changes were well received, and it made sense for the television series to go in a new different when it came to the atmosphere and tone of the show. However, other times, the changes were more controversial, and audiences were disappointed with how the beloved source had been tampered with and changed.

Sherlock Holmes is one of the most enduring characters in pop culture. Created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and first introduced in 1887's A Study in Scarlet, Holmes is the world's greatest detective, a cold, detached, highly analytical, and manipulative genius who doesn't mind bending the rules. There have been many takes on Holmes in film and television, but few are are beloved or acclaimed as the BBC's Sherlock.

In 2022, Dan Lin, the producer of “The Lego Movie” and “It,” was in negotiations to become head of DC Studios. It was a singular opportunity to reimagine the company behind Superman, Batman and other costumed heroes. But talks broke down. Among the reported reasons was that David Zaslav, the head of DC’s parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, and Lin could not agree on a way to properly compensate him for leaving his production company Rideback for the new gig.
So why, less than two years later, has Lin decided to take a different corporate job, overseeing Netflix’s film division? And what kinds of obstacles will he need to overcome if Netflix is going to raise the quality of the movies it makes?
For Lin, Netflix offers a vast consumer base, one that overshadows those of rivals like Max or Disney+. It’s also more stable than other media companies.

Two Sherlock Holmes TV shows are in development at HBO, with Robert Downey Jr. involved. Millie Bobby Brown will likely return for Enola Holmes 3. A new CW TV show, Sherlock & Daughter, is also in development, starring David Thewlis.
The various Sherlock Holmes movies and TV shows in development demonstrate how Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's detective still captures the imaginations of people everywhere a century after he was created. Sherlock Holmes has proved to be a successful property, which can be adapted by anyone since it is in the public domain. Despite the problems with Sherlock seasons 3 and 4, the show was undeniably a hit at first. Steven Moffat began working on his new limited series “Douglas Is Cancelled” in 2018, before most people — Moffat included — had even heard of the term “cancel culture.”
It was only later he realized his story — about a distinguished news anchor whose life is turned upside down when an unguarded comment goes viral — exemplified it.
“At the time I wrote this, I wouldn’t have known the expression,” the screenwriter, best known for his work on fan favorites “Sherlock” and “Doctor Who,” tells Variety. “Obviously, [once I did] I co-opted it straight into the title.”
The show follows the misadventures of Douglas Bellowes, played by Hugh Bonneville of “Paddington” and “Downton Abbey” fame. After a rare verbal misstep at a wedding spirals out of control, he finds himself scrambling to salvage both his personal and professional lives. Karen Gillan (“Guardians of the Galaxy”) also stars as Douglas’ ambitious and internet-savvy co-host Madeline.

As the season of film awards and achievements heads towards the night of The Oscars, a select few and equally auspicious award ceremonies are yet to happen. Among them, the Screen Actors Guild Awards seemed to have chosen Robert Downey Jr. as their pick for the Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in Oppenheimer, a deserving accolade that almost all organizations and individuals seem to agree with.

And thus, when the star took to the stage to formally accept the award with his hands, he was sure to give credit to the recent accolades of his career to several actors he has worked with in the past. Among them, he also includes the name of Mel Gibson, the actor and filmmaker who practically brought his career on track again after he made a film that un-blacklisted the star from Hollywood.

Robert Downey Jr. has been active in the industry since his childhood. His career started with roles in movies made by his father, the underground filmmaker Robert Downey Sr., director of Putney Swope and other satirical comedies. Although Robert Downey Jr. is more often recognized for his performance as Tony Stark in the Iron Man movies and other MCU productions, he has never limited himself to playing the same type of character. On the contrary, he's constantly taking on both leading and supporting roles that are unrelated to his previous works.
With such an extensive and impressive catalog now, Downey Jr. is in much more than just ten great films. Some, like True Believer and Wonder Boys, come close to being included as the best of his movies that aren't in the MCU. Andrew Scott has stolen everyone’s hearts as the ‘Hot Priest’ from Fleabag or as ‘James Moriarty’ from Sherlock. His recent film All of Us Strangers has been receiving a lot of love during Awards season, with him being nominated for a Best Actor Golden Globe. The film also earned six nominations at the BAFTAs, which took place earlier this week.
While Scott was not nominated for an award at the BAFTAs and was there to support his co-star Paul Mescal, he was reportedly extremely uncomfortable with a question asked by a BBC interviewer. When the interviewer asked an inappropriate question about Saltburn star Barry Keoghan, Scott reportedly walked away uncomfortably from the interview.

Emola Holmes refreshes Sherlock Holmes franchise by focusing on sibling relationships, setting a high bar for future adaptations. Sherlock & Daughter faces the challenge of setting itself apart from the beloved Enola Holmes movies. To succeed, Sherlock & Daughter needs strong characters, distinct visual style, and unique narrative structure.
The Netflix movie Enola Holmes has enjoyed critical plaudits for its fresh take on the Sherlock Holmes franchise, but one upcoming adaptation of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle character already looks like a lackluster addition. Enola Holmes sees Millie Bobby Brown as the titular younger sibling to the famed Sherlock Holmes, who embarks on a journey to find their missing mother. With Brown's strong performance as the character in two movies and Enola Holmes 3 in development, the character has made great strides to expand the legendary inspector's legacy in unique ways.

Actor Andrew Scott recently joined the 77th BAFTA Awards ceremony in support of his 2023 romantic fantasy film All of Us Strangers, which received six nominations, including Outstanding British Film and Best Director. Note: The following story discusses spoilers for the “True Detective: Night Country” finale.
“True Detective: Night Country” wrapped up plenty of loose ends with its finale on Sunday, but unlike its preceding seasons, the Alaska-set mystery didn’t culminate with a clear-cut ending that answered all the mystery’s questions, nor with the perpetrator of the inciting violence going to jail.
While the finale built on the season’s intensity with a dramatic foot chase and fight, creator and showrunner Issa López opted for a more subtle conclusion that gave detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) enough satisfaction to “walk away quietly.”
“I grew up reading Sherlock Holmes, which is part of why I’m doing this job now, and the best stories of Sherlock Holmes, the ones I love the most, are the ones where he finds the killer, and decides to simply walk away quietly,...

The new CW series Sherlock & Daughter will bring a unique twist to the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes, exploring a father-daughter dynamic. With David Thewlis as Sherlock Holmes, Blu Hunt as Amelia, and Dougray Scott as Moriarty, the show deviates significantly from canon by introducing a daughter for Holmes. While the series could offer a fresh take on the character, the decision to make Sherlock Holmes a father could potentially harm the iconic detective's established identity.
The CW's upcoming Sherlock & Daughter series will put yet another twist on the character of Sherlock Holmes, and this time, it could mean some significant changes to his canon counterpart.
