A hair raising time for Baldy!
Rabical-9110 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The final episode of the first season of ITV's short lived but hilarious sitcom 'The Baldy Man'.

'Hair' begins with Baldy ( if you can believe it ) having a bad hair day. His comb over has become so unmanageable it keeps floating in his face. He decides then it is time to pay a visit to the hairdresser.

Arriving at the salon, Baldy annoys the camp owner of the salon ( who looks like not unlike Brian May ) with his bumbling antics. The owner is further displeased when upon paying for his hair cut, Baldy gives him a pitiful five pence tip!

'Hair' has its moments but perhaps not quite enough of them, though Andy Gray's performance as the salon owner provides some fun. Future big name Ashley Jensen appears as one of the hairdressers.

Funniest bit - Baldy's comb-over becoming melded to a toasted sandwich he is making for his breakfast on account of it being so overgrown!

In 'Crime', Baldy's neighbours have had their house burgled. Baldy is concerned that his house could be next and so he goes to great lengths to protect it.

To make matters worse, the brats from next door start terrorising Baldy by tapping on his windows in the middle of the night to make him think he is being burgled. When he angrily chases them away, he is apprehended by the police, who suspect him of being a burglar!

Again, 'Crime', while not without its funny moments, is a bit thin in places. The ending was somewhat telegraphed. Baldy sets up a burglar trap and ends up falling foul to it, only then for a burglar to ransack the place. The troublesome kids were a pain and offered no purpose or comedy value. Thankfully, they were gone by the arrival of the second series two years later. Sadly, the second series ( which in some ways was better than the first ), was not networked and sadly did not get the chance to properly find an audience.

Funniest bit - telegraphed as it was, it would be Baldy falling foul to his own trap, funny only because of Gregor's hilarious actions during this moment.

'Hair/Crime', for reasons unknown, was not shown in the UK on the show's original broadcast, though the episode has been shown in international screenings of the show.
